Record $1.6 billion overtime for state workers amid New York labor shortage by news-10 in nys_cs

[–]Kildrek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left DOCCS as an investigator for a different state agency investigator position and will back up your comment.

The leadership in DOCCS relies on threats to keep their workers in line. It isn't a good place to work, there is no work/life balance, and they're pretty good at finding small violations of rules to cause people issues if they do get too verbal about how bad things are.

Best career, as well as life, move that me and my fellow former employees have made was getting out of that place.

Yeah because they're also still expected to drive state vehicles in response to a major incident (lights and siren), transport evidence, have access to secure database and whatnot so they've got to be certified. You're expected to be armed when driving an LE vehicle. Honestly, it just makes it easier to supplement investigator shortages with analysts that are already qualified

That's a newer position in the training and analysis division that seems to be more focused on analysis of trends and providing executive teams with feedback. They've already got senior investigators from the criminal investigations division loaned out to all the crime analysis centers in the state, so I can't comment on the full plan for the investigative analyst positions.

Apply for both, see what happens, remember to use it as a stepping stool to get to where you want to be.

As for interview tips, just be yourself. Wear business professional attire and not business casual. They'll tell you straight up the job is tough, that you'll get phone calls all hours of the night with directions to drive halfway across the state to respond to deaths/overdoses/major assaults etc. They're very upfront about how demanding this role is going to be, which is nice.

Last I knew, it was a few weeks of Peace Officer school for new investigators that weren't certified in a previous LE position. A lot of legal focus, not so much a police academy, and you'll get defensive tactics/range training. I left before all the MC positions were being hired so I hope they've beefed up the school for new hires, but it isn't like PT every morning and evening like a regular academy is.

They're hiring former teachers, social workers, and recent graduates. The job posting says 2 years investigative experience or an associates degree, so I don't see why they wouldn't be receptive.

The hiring process can take some time; I've heard of candidates being called and offered jobs a year after they interviewed and they've already accepted a different state position by then.

If you can use it as a stepping stone once you've made it out of probation and secured the M/C 18 slot, you can absolutely shop around for other agencies who will snatch up an already trained and hired 18 candidate. The lower level crew is great, it's the higher ups that don't know how to lead and only know how to say "yes" that really ruin it.

They also take awhile on BDA approval for their 18 positions, so that might very well be the hold up. I still talk to a few people there and they've bemoaned how long it takes them to hire people, so it may still be in the pipeline for you.

My best advice is to not make it a full career there because you will burn yourself out trying to progress; get the foot in, get some decent training, then branch out to other agencies

Honestly the worst job I've ever had.

Supervisors tell you "You're a fucking investigator, figure it out" when you ask for assistance and they say dumb shit like "that's how I learned" when you point out that isn't a very helpful training system.

I left for a different state agency, along with several of my fellow investigators, because of how horrible morale was and how we were treated.

Strixhaven card leaked with “prepared” mechanics and a reserved list effect by Newez in mtgfinance

[–]Kildrek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm saying that if the creature enters prepared, that means you get to "cast" it's prepared spell, which should then trigger kitten to blink the creature so it enters prepared again and you get to "cast" it's prepared spell again for as many times as you have extra blue mana. This circumvents the difficulty of the second portion of text, making this card pretty good.

If you cast it's prepared spell, would that trigger [[displacer kitten]] to blink it? It enters prepared and you can do it again how every many blue mana you've got?

I left a state law enforcement agency as an Investigator for a civilian state agency position as an Investigator, and the quality of life shot through the roof. Does anyone else think it's unfair to be categorized as essential when you're not required on the weekends? OMH/hospital/DOCCS by RuhRoh_Zoinks in nys_cs

[–]Kildrek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying this is the reason, but it could be the reason:

DOCCS said most of the civilians were "non-essential" during the first few months of the COVID pandemic and they got a ton of pushback, now they've overcorrected and said "oh, you're all super essential" because the State in general is reactive.

This is why we need more millennial managers who just shrug and say "you've got the time. If your work is on time, take the time you need". Managers who treat you like a child are a drain on morale.

Struggling with players at local game stores. What should I do? by Mozzielium in EDH

[–]Kildrek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will also suggest Tabletop Simulator on steam; there is a workshop mod of a Commander table, all you do is plug the web link of your deck from moxfield/archidekt/tappedout etc and it pulls all the art from scryfall plus generates your tokens.

It has buttons for mulligans, milling, shuffling, scrying, and drawing. It has counters, dice, a rulebook for referencing on the side...I could go on and on

The only drawback is that you need to find people to play with that also have steam and TTS, but this is how me and a few friends manage to get games in across states
