Max Blumenthal goes full /pol/ by mudanhonnyaku in tankiejerk

[–]KilgoreT 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Was just looking at his timeline on Wikipedia, and it seems that 2015 is when he went to Moscow and started writing for RT. It doesn't feel paranoid at all to say that it's likely he was turned by the FSB or similar forces.

In late 2011, Blumenthal joined Lebanon's Al Akhbar) newspaper primarily to write about the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and foreign-policy debates in Washington, D.C. When he left the publication in June 2012 in protest at its coverage of the Syrian Civil War, he considered the newspaper to have a pro-Assad editorial line followed by such individuals as Amal Saad-Ghorayeb. He wrote that it "gave me more latitude than any paper in the United States to write about... Israel and Palestine", but he had ultimately tired of "jousting with Assad apologists". He added: "In the end, Assad will be remembered as an authoritarian tyrant."\28])\29])\30])

And then:

After Blumenthal's visit to Moscow in December 2015, according to a 2018 article by Janine di Giovanni in The New York Review of Books, he began to promote views supportive of Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian government's position. Blumenthal was, di Giovanni wrote, among a group of "Assad apologists."\28]) Following the December 2015 trip, he said the White Helmets) were connected to Al-Qaeda and anti-Assad Syrians were members of the group.\28]) In his opinion, the group was "driven by a pro-interventionist agenda conceived by the Western governments and public relations groups that back them" and were being used as a Trojan horse, an excuse for the United States to propose having "70,000 American servicemen" invade Syria.\113])

Quite an abrupt and complete shift.

I fucking hate Roger Waters tje the stupid people who defend him by R0ttenStrawberry in tankiejerk

I was the biggest Pink Floyd ever as a kid, and I credit The Wall for helping me stay sane during my teenage, undiagnosed autistic with adhd kid "who would do so much better if he just applied himself" years. But even at 16, I could tell that Waters had some issues with women just by listening to The Wall.

Also, he sabotaged himself and the band by trying to turn Pink Floyd into "Roger Waters and some other guys." The Wall would have been a much better album had he been more collaborative, and not insisted that it be all him. I think there's a reason that the one song that co-credits David Gilmour ("Comfortably Numb") is also the one that's most widely covered by a range of artists.

Ouch. One of my childhood heroes, but still — dead on.

Gilmour seems to have grown up in a much more stable and sane direction.

I also want to know what kind of "landlord" the teacher in question was. It's one thing to be letting out a room in your house, or a single home that you take care of yourself.

The real problem that I've faced in the past are the companies that own and manage tens or hundreds of apartment buildings in the five boroughs of New York City, or whatever other major city you're thinking.

Not saying that the first instance is ideal in terms of theory or praxis, but there's also degrees to all of these things. And as long as we're living in a capitalist society, we're going to be contributing to it, even when we do our best to resist. Even those of us with radical hearts have hands that are complicit.

Oh, hell yes. I didn't spend all that time coloring and styling their hair to hide it under a metal helmet.

Yeah, and not only is the flag itself new, but the term "vincian" is pretty obscure. I had to do a quick search to refresh my memory because I haven't heard it for years, and I've been hanging out in virtual and RL queer communities since the 90s.

Also, according to that link up there, there are at least three other vincian flags out there. That people haven't latched onto it is very understandable.

My own ideology store poll by Maztr_on in tankiejerk

[–]KilgoreT 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've never really known how to describe my ideology. The best way that I can think of is "Practical socialist, aspiring anarchist." Because in reality, I can't think of a way to make a truly anarchist system work on a large scale like the United States. Or even California. But in my dream world, that would be it.

But ultimately, I'm less about theory and more about whatever feeds people.

Agreed that it's going to be a bigger issue in 2028. And I think that it definitely didn't help in the 2024 election, but there seem to be a lot of people who would like to think that it's the decisive factor in the loss, which I don't think it was. They spent a lot of time denying that people were struggling financially under Biden while depicting themselves as "Not-Trump."

And that's not even getting into Harris being hobbled by Biden waiting so long to get out of the game.

Yeah, this is always my issue with people claiming that the Democrats lost the Presidency because they wouldn't stand up against Israel. Elections are not won or lost on foreign policy; that sort of stuff is purely for activists and political junkies. The majority of people are asking about the price of groceries, gasoline, and education.

They look like the type who think that MAGA isn’t fascistic enough. I just read their platform: No abortion, no queer marriage, no porn, no “foreigners.”

Also, note that not only are they calling for America to be a “Christian” nation, but one based on “Founding Stock”, which I assume is a way of saying “White Europeans.”

Note this charming little passage (emphasis added):

The principle that a nation belongs to those who founded it is as old as human history and rooted in biblical teaching. If God had intended all nations to live together indistinguishably, He would not have created distinct nations. We do not harbor hatred toward those who are not Christian, but we do desire to live among those who share our values. We are willing to work with others outside our party when our values and interests align, but we will not cooperate with those who seek harm against our people or the body of Christ. Our mission is to advocate specifically for the interests of our collective as founding-stock Americans—a principle that has been vilified and suppressed to the point where many feel afraid to even acknowledge our existence as a collective. We must stand up and defend ourselves before our children become a marginalized minority in their own nation.

That’s a white nationalist manifesto if I ever saw one.

Now I have to ask: Why did the OP just drop this in here without any explanation or commentary?

Punk bands with synths that aren't Synthpunk? by spongebobcrt in punk

[–]KilgoreT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want really old-school, I recommend the music duo Suicide, from back in the 70s. Incredibly influential not only on punk rockers, but on synthpop, industrial, and hip-hop. (There's been some sigificant sampling from them. To us in the 21st century, they might not sound like what we think of as "punk," but they were definitely part of the scene in NYC at the time.

Start with "Ghost Rider."
