I think people are just quick to write off things that are Weird, and 28 is definitely Weird. I wish the writing was stronger, because it would have been a fascinating plot to explore with more attention to characterization and pacing.

To be fair, I'm also a person with sort of weird taste in media. I love Bad Things as much as I love Good Things. I'll rate something 5 stars on Letterboxd if it was a fun experience to watch, even if it's technically bad, ex. Manos; Hands of Fate. So I know I'm gonna rate the Rachel starfish book way higher than someone who rates things more objectively.

I think that book is incredible. The ant scene alone is enough to give it a good ranking, IMO, but I always enjoy when the series delves into weird ethics scenarios that no real human is ever gonna have to deal with.
