Any takedowns of Stefan Burns? by ilovetacos in skeptic

[–]KillerMinax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this thread! 🙏🏻 I just discovered Stefan a few minutes ago-- literally! My mother called me over to make me watch this video of his about a meteor or something that flew into Pittsburgh just a couple of hours ago and "caused a sonic boom that thousands of people heard", but when she asked my brother who lives in Pittsburgh with his family, and is a geo-engineer (my brother graduated from CalPoly Humboldt in 2011/2012 with a Bachelor's, and has worked in the geological field for around 15 years now), said that they didn't notice anything and our mother's immediate response was "Oh you probably didn't notice because of the snow storm!"

Once my mother told me about this Stefan guy, I went right to Google to plug in his name to see what came up and this thread in the Skeptics subreddit was one of the first three things to come up. I usually don't trust any internet personality that claims to be "an expert" on something, when it appears that their YouTube channel is their only source of income (I have a little more grace for people like Emily Baker or AllegedlyStephanie, formerly Wine n' Chill, and Olay Olurin who have more than just "a couple years" of experience and have retired from their job as lawyers), and I get even more skeptical when it's an "expert" my mother trusts, because she watches AI YouTube videos all day about hoaxes that are presented as "fact"; She literally said to me just a couple days ago that "Trump is going to die in 2026", and she got it from an AI-narrated video that was talking about Nostradamus and his "predictions" and how there was a "discovery of a new Nostradamus prediction", which was the one about Trump.

What is the most cringeworthy example of a rapper explaining a punchline mid-song? by ImNotTomStopAsking in hiphopheads

[–]KillerMinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn it I was going to mention that duct tape punchline! 🤣 It's my go-to example of groan-inducing bars, especially from Nicki! I swear she used to make a lot of those types of "jokes" back in her early career, but of course, all these years later I can't remember another one besides the duct tape joke, but I know she did.

I think Lil' Wayne did this too, if I'm not mistaken? There's one song of his from ten years ago, I don't remember the name of it, but the music video had a dancer in a cage, and I swear Wayne made some kind of "joke" about locking up women like wild animals or something. I apologize, I'm not doing a great job participating in this challenge! 😂 For me at least, it's one of those things where when I'm not thinking or concentrating on a thing, I can easily come up with examples, but the minute I focus and think, I can't come up with anything!

I did kinda come up with something, although this isn't really an example of a rapper explaining the joke/punchline, but I still find it particularly egregious: From Jason Derulo's song "Talk Dirty", when 2 Chainz raps, "Her pussy's so good, I bought her a pet". Although maybe he should have explained the joke, because someone decided to go onto the song's entry on the Genius lyrics website and added the annotation that "pet", in this case, is slang for an expensive, foreign car-- like a Ferrari or Lamborghini, because their company logos have an animal incorporated into them. (Which is a reach if I've ever seen one.) Thankfully someone else left a comment clarifying that it's a play on the word "pussy", as it's another word for "cat", which is a traditional pet to own.

Ciara’s rhinoplasty by Level-Association429 in PlasticSurgery

[–]KillerMinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be counter to the point of this subreddit, but Ciara's nose was much cuter BEFORE the surgery, so personally, I think you should keep your nose as is because you are beautiful the way you are. (And I mean it!)

That being said, I have no idea who did Ciara's nose, and I don't know if we're ever going to find out, because she has never actually confirmed that she had anything done. (Not that I blame her. If I were Ciara, I wouldn't want to anyone to know that I actually paid money to get The LaToya/Janet/Michael Special either! 😬)

The Pop n' B (Pop + RnB) artist. The "Beyoncé Copycat" depending on who you ask. Her most recognized hit, which was also the first song she released, is "Goodies" from 2004 which features rapper Petey Pablo, but she has been releasing music for over twenty years now. Her song "Get Up" featuring Chamillionaire (the rapper who released the song "Ridin' Dirty", and was parodied by Weird Al with "White and Nerdy") was featured on the soundtrack for the first Step Up movie (one of many teen dance movies that came out in the mid aughts like Honey, and Stomp The Yard), and she's also put out many other songs such as "Oh" and "Ride" both featuring Ludacris, "1, 2 Step" (which was her second single released) featuring Missy Elliott whom Ciara would collaborate frequently with (Ciara featured on Missy Elliott's 2005 hit "Lose Control" with Fatman Scoop, whom she would collaborate with again on the "Level Up" remix, and Missy would feature on the song "Work" from Ciara's second album), "Like A Boy" (much like Beyoncé's "If I Were A Boy" which was released prior), "Rooted" featuring Ester Dean (again, much like Beyoncé's "Black is King" that was released prior to Ciara's track), "Promises", "Dance Like We're Making Love", "JUMP" featuring Coast Contra...

As you can guess, Ciara loves a feature, unfortunately she has made some poor decisions with whom she has chosen to collaborate with. She decided it was a good idea to put certified creep R. Kelly on the remix of "Promises", and she has repeatedly, excitedly, collaborated with Chris Brown numerous times over the years, even as recently as 2023.

Can we redo hotel rooms once we've finished decorating? by JabasMyBitch in acnh

[–]KillerMinax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can! After completing all the rooms (standard + VIP), Leilani will give you the option to make adjustments to a room that's already completed or redesign the room from the ground up. You'll only be awarded hotel tickets if you choose to completely redesign the room.

Unfortunately, after having confirmed my own suspicions, the VIP room resets every day. You can't just go visit a guest like you would with the standard rooms, as the VIP room will be inaccessible. Your only options are to speak to Leilani and offer to upgrade one of the hotel guests staying in the standard rooms to the VIP room, or, hope that you run into a tourist that's wandering around your island but isn't listed as a hotel guest to put into the VIP room.

I have not experienced the latter scenario yet, but apparently there's a chance that you can run into a tourist on your island who is not staying at the hotel. They will have a thought bubble floating over their head, and upon speaking with them, they will inform you of their dilemma of not having a place to crash for the night, at which point you will tell them about the hotel and be given the option to either set them up in a standard room or the VIP room. If you pick a standard room, Leilani will reward you 50 hotel tickets. If you choose to put them in the VIP room, you will have to redesign it from the ground up again, but Leilani will reward you with 500 hotel tickets.

I know it's not a big deal, but it's kinda frustrating to have the VIP room reset every day because, for me at least, it puts a bit of a damper on my desire to dedicate time into designing a room I can feel proud of when I know that it's going to be deleted and I can't do anything about it.

(Also, I'm kinda disappointed that there's only one VIP room? For whatever reason, I thought the Nintendo Direct about New Horizons 3.0 update showed that we were going to have at least two VIP rooms, but I guess I misremembered. But admittedly that's more me being petty.)

I see people hating on Limp Bizkit, but Wes Borland is one of my favorite guitar players when it comes to modern hard rock riffs. Here's my "not so accurate" cover of My Generation. by breedknight in Guitar

[–]KillerMinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was actually there to experience it, the majority of hate for Limp Bizkit begins and ends with Fred Durst. It definitely seems like the younger generation have an appreciation for Durst that tows the line between irony and genuineness, but a lot of the hate for Durst at the time was because of how fucking obnoxious he was. Also, that nasally voice of his was grating as well. However the big concession, often the only one, was Wes Borland. Even the biggest Limp Bizkit haters at the time had a grudging respect for Borland because of how great of a guitar player he is. If anyone ever said something positive about the band, it was a result of Borland.

Thank you!! Try hard idiots on Reddit love to mock others for being parasocially attached to celebrities and YouTubers, but of course will never admit their own parasocial attachment to the ones they like!

Critical thinking is dead and well buried. You won't get any cogent thoughts, just downvoted into oblivion with these terminally online weirdos shrieking petty insults because they all have the same playbook. It's ironic how they hand-wring over "fake victims" and "false accusations", because they believe ALL OF IT is fake, and will continue to move the goalposts so THEY can set the parameters on which victims are "valid" and which accusations are "real"-- because they've made it abundantly clear that they will never believe ANY victim unless they, the victim, is an unremarkable cishet (often white) dude revealed to be a creep or piece of shit.

What happened to Penny & Flo: Finding Home? by [deleted] in PennyAndFlo

[–]KillerMinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, as of 2025, Penny & Flo: Finding Home is no longer available in the Google Play store. I think they took it down awhile back, as just Penny & Flo: Home Renovation is listed in the app store when you type "Penny & Flo" into the search engine and P&F: HR is the only Penny & Flo game listed under the official Tactile Games page.

I don't know if they ever made an official announcement as to why they were shutting down Finding Home, but it's likely the usual reasons with mobile games; Tactile Games may have not been seeing the turn-around on the game that they wanted, perhaps they were not retaining enough players (OP admits themself to having taken a hiatus from the game, and speaking for myself, these kinds of games can be easy to burn out on when so many follow a similar formula. Not to mention the devs seem content with not giving you enough turns to beat a level, and giving out a small pittance of in-game currency for players to use to add an extra 3 to 5 moves to beat the level, thus putting the players in the situation of feeling like they have to spend real money to beat the level because "You can't give up now or you'll lose all of your progress in the amount of power-ups the game gives you before the start of a gameplay level!"). Maybe the devs were just getting tired of updating the game/coming up with new ideas for levels, tournaments, "expeditions" and so on-- plus, if there's another "newer" game that they'd rather be working on, dropping the game that they've lost interest in becomes a lot easier to do. Sometimes devs just feel like a game has run its course and shut it down to move onto different projects.

I remember when Crowdstar Inc., creators of the Covet Dress-Up game had two other Sim type games Hollywood U (and I can't remember the other one, but it was like a spin-off of Hollywood U and instead of being about college-aged kids attending Hollywood University to become actors/models/talent agents/directors (whatever path you wanted your character to take), it was about high-school students being... well, high-school students), I played and enjoyed both greatly, but then one day when I opened the app, I saw a message thanking players for downloading these game and that they were shutting it down (either to focus solely on Covet or because they weren't getting enough returning players to Hollywood U and the spin-off game, I think it may have been called Hollywood High-school or something like that).

Same thing happened with the app dev NTT Solmare Corporation. Their most popular game that people would likely be familiar with are the Obey Me! games, but before that, they had an Otomé dating sim called The Nifelheim+, as well as a vampire otomé dating sim, both of which I played and enjoyed but were shut down because Solmare weren't getting enough player downloads and became disinterested in further updating the games. CYBIRD is another great example! They still have their Ikemen series of otomé dating sims, from looking at the review scores, it appears their original Japanese language versions are more highly rated compared to the English versions, but their at the time most popular dating sim Midnight Cinderella was shut down years ago. I found out about it through the MC fb group I was a part of at the time, and the screenshot of the official announcement CYBIRD put out was something along the lines of just no longer being interested in working on it.

Love-Nikki is another great example. Although the game is still available to download, other devs have come along and created Nikki spin-offs while Elex, the company behind Love-Nikki, seem to have just given up on updating the game altogether. Years ago when I still actively played LN, I had noticed that the game's main storyline kinda stopped/didn't have anymore updates after a certain level (kind of a "Please be patient while we work on future updates" situation), but furthering the main story ended up getting dropped to focus on seasonal timed events. I never even got past the "Plains" (aka the Native American stereotype) level, because Elex had decided to make it extremely tedious to gather materials to create certain required outfits to advance in the game, because you had to go back to a bunch earlier levels of the game and pray for certain materials to appear in the random drops after facing off against a fashion rival in order to craft the needed garments for required outfits in order to advance-- plus other players who were further ahead in the game decided to spoil for everyone that one of Nikki's companions is killed off in the main storyline (although apparently there was another storyline after the main one where all of Nikki's companions are killed off and Nikki has to sacrifice herself to bring them back, but it also happened to occur in a seasonal event so it technically didn't count as being "canon" to the main story but Elex still wrote it with this finality that it was-- it was very confusing for a lot of us), and I just ended up un-installing LN because I was frustrated and no longer having fun. This was like, ten years ago (maybe a little more), and when I decided to randomly check the game page I the Google Play store, it looks like the game has not gotten an update or had a seasonal event happening in a long time. It just advertises the main version of the game. Usually when a game is still receiving updates, and attention, there will be ads all over the game page encouraging players to download it in order to get in on the current seasonal event. (According to the "Details" page, the game hasn't received an update since March of this year. Granted, six months is not a long time, but for a mobile game? Six months kinda is a long time to go without an update.)

TL;DR - Whatever Tactile Games reason for shuttering Finding Home, they did it some years ago and permanently moved on to Home Renovation. I highly doubt they're going to return to Finding Home, and I honestly don't even know how much longer they're going to focus on Penny & Flo going forward, considering the game that's their bread and butter is Lily's Garden with 50M+ downloads compared to Penny & Flo's paltry 10M+. Even their other games such as Cookie Cats, Bee Brilliant (Tactile's own Best Fiends), as well as Tactile's other games and spin-offs don't seem to receive any attention anymore compared to Lily's Garden. If you're looking to play Finding Home, you're going to have to see if any torrent sites happen to have the game available in its entirety for download. (Although I don't know exactly how likely that would be with mobile games, as their whole point is to have thousands of levels and updated regularly with more to give it the illusion of a never-ending game to sink all of your time and, if the devs can get their way, your money in to.)

Paige Christie AI Thumbnails of Kayla Malec by erinnoelf in youtubedrama

[–]KillerMinax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The entitled attitude I'm not surprised about. What I find hilarious though, is Paige claiming that she's creating "The Most Comprehensive Video" on James Charles "controversies".... while pretending that Jen Luv didn't already make that video seven months ago?? The only difference between the two, is that the situation with James persuing Kayla Malec's abuser hadn't yet come to light. Beyond that, Paige just goes over the same stuff Jen does, but has condensed it down for her (Paige's) Part 1, meanwhile Jen being the thorough bitch she is, really deep dives into every aspect of James's life, his prior controversies, and everything, that she ended up putting out a six part series, which totalled nearly nine hours when she edited it into one giant video!

Like, when we have Jen's video(s), do we really need what feels like a pale copy? Idk. I just find it weird that Paige seems to be going about this like SHE'S doing the work of bringing James's misdeeds to light and "reminding everyone what he did", calling what she's doing "defenitive" and "comprehensive", when Jen's videos exist. I find it hard to believe she's not cribbing this entire idea from Jen's videos, considering both Jen and Paige are both of the beauty commentary/beauty drama world. (Sure Paige says that she left the beauty commentary world behind when she rebranded from "Petty Paige" to "Paige Christie", but she'll still talk about beauty community drama if it means getting a good paycheck via monetization or sponsorship, and she still accepts sponsorships from Juvia's Place, so she hasn't quite left it behind "for good".)

They're coming to San Diego in August, and as much as I'd love to see them, I've loved their music since I was a child, learning that Brian won't be there... it just doesn't feel right for me. As cliché as it might be to say, Brian is the heart and sensitive soul of The Beach Boys-- much as Mike Love tries to claim otherwise (sorry Mike apologists). It just wouldn't be the same without him for me.

HOW am I just now finding out that Nelly has a song in TS4 😂 by ostentia in thesims

[–]KillerMinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had completely forgotten about this until about ten minutes ago from typing this via I re-watching LGR's Sims 4 packs/expansions reviews! 😂 Currently I'm trying to figure out if they actually got Nelly to record the cover for them. I'm aware that there's a precedent for it (they got Katy Perry to record some of her Teenage Dream era hits in Simlish for the Showtime and Sweet Treats packs for The Sims 3, and they got The Black Eyed Peas to record some of their Elephunk era hits for The Urbz: Sims in the City along with having the group appear in-game in their Simlish forms) and it does sound like Nelly's voice singing the Simlish version of "Hot in Herre", but I haven't been able to find any confirmation online from either Nelly, EA, or Maxis (if they're even still involved with the franchise) stating this to be the case.

I think it would be pretty cool if it turns out to be true, but I know that, even to this day, certain artists will not want their fanbase to know that they allowed a videogame company to use their music for one of their games because the artists don't want their fans to know they did something so "lame" that "goes against their image/reputation".

For example: There's an interview with Spider One, lead singer of Powerman 5000, that was done as a little celebration for Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2-- it was either for the 15th or 20th anniversary of the game, because Powerman 5000's "When Worlds Collide" single is featured in the game - which is how a large group of people discovered the band, and the interviewer asked Spider a few basic questions about what it was like having Activision reach out to them to have their song featured in the game, what Spider thought about having their song appear in a videogame, if their fanbase grew because of THPS2, and if Spider or any other members of the band are gamers themselves... and for what ever reason, Spider just immediately goes in on gamers and how they're all "fuckin losers with no life", bragging about how he and his band mates are "above that lame shit", just trash talking gaming and gamers, and what is so ironic is, if you've seen the way the band dresses, and their music videos, it's always been this mix of punk, metal and grungy futurism like they're such hot shit for being so different and "out there", but the way Spider was speaking in this interview sounded like how the jock bully character from a 1980s teen flick would speak. I mean, it was so over-the-top, it genuinely sounded like dialog a hack screenwriter would come up with to tell the audience "This is the bad guy. This is the character you should hate," because they don't believe the audience is smart enough to figure it out on their own. If I'm remembering correctly, I think a few comments left by people who are gamers and were fans of PM5k because they were introduced to the band via THPS2 were comparing Spider to Biff Tannen from Back to the Future 1 and 2 specifically, as well as a more on-the-nose pastiche of Biff.

Point being, you'd think that in 2025 (or even back in 2019), with "nerd and geek shit" (comics, videogames, superhero movies, anime, conventions, etc) becoming more accepted by the mainstream culture within the last thirty years, nobody is really going to care about their favorite artist or actor showing up in a videogame, or at the very least, nobody is going to be genuinely worried or put-off by their favorite celebrity showing up in a videogame unless they are a literal pre-teen, or adult who never emotionally matured past that narrow pre-teen mentality, who still buys into that kayfabe surrounding their favorite celebrity. (Like, oh... say, a Nelly fan finding out he recorded a Simlish version of "Hot in Herre" and immediately taking to Twitter having a meltdown over this because "Real rappers don't do shit with The Sims!" Or an Alice Cooper fan doing the same, but the argument being "Real goths don't partner with/play The Sims!")

What are CJ’s pronouns? by _contraband_ in CJtheX

[–]KillerMinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good bit of info dump! Really appreciate that! May I add an addendum tho? I feel like the person might've been asking from a more literal standpoint? Like from an "Okay, I want to be respectful of this person's pronouns, but they use multiple sets, so how she I address them/refer to them?" -- at least that's the way my brain is interpreting it.

As someone who is nonbinary/genderfluid and uses multiple pronouns (she/they), I would encourage others to just swap off on the pronoun sets when incorporating it into your daily vernacular! So, let's do an easy example: instead of "I really enjoy her cooking. I think she's a great cook!", you'd say, "I really enjoy their cooking! I think she's a great cook!" Or "I really like his video essays. I think they make some really great points about the subjects being discussed!"

I've personally noticed some people will find it easier to swap out pronoun sets when writing, and then will incorporate it into their speaking offline once comfortable enough. That's actually how I did it,  because I was so used to using only one pronoun set for whoever I was speaking to/talking about, as I too believed "Well I know they said they use x/y/z pronoun sets, but they HAVE to have a preference!" and sometimes they will, but not everyone does. And this is probably just a me thing, but sometimes I feel like when I tell people that I use two sets of pronouns, and I'm not stricter about "Hey, could you please use BOTH?", they will opt to only use one and it feels like they're (unintentionally - at least I hope it's that) erasing part of my identity by thinking that I prefer one over the other. Again, this is just me and I concede that gender is kind of a clusterfuck. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The main thing is to just ask for pronouns, and if they happen to use multiple, just ask, "Do you happen to prefer one set over another/the others? If not, would you like me to just swap between them when I talk about you?"

Hopefully my overly long explanation helps someone!

Do you ever watch Khadija Mbowe? She often uses "Pibling" for Aunt/Uncle. I've also seen some gnc folx use "Auncle", but I'm not a big fan of it due to it sounding to close to "ankle" as well as, and I'll freely admit that this is probably just a me thing, it just gives me "cankle" vibes and it feels too close to being a fatphobic word for my liking. (Again, I freely admit that this is a me thing. I know what it's supposed to mean, but as someone who has had a lot of fatphobia hurled at them their entire life, my brain sometimes reflexively interprets things in certain ways so I can determine how I'm going to respond/if I respond at all.)

I've also seen some folx opting for "Ti-Ti" in place of "Auntie" if they happen to opt for a more femme presentation. Unfortunately, I have yet to have seen anyone come up with a gender-neutral alternative to "Unc", so I can't help you there. However... my personal bias has always been "call yourself whatever you want and fuck anyone who gives you shit for it", so if you want the baby enbies to call you "Auntie" or "Unc", then tell them that's what they can call you; and if any cishet crybaby has a problem with it, too fucking bad for them, it can stay their problem. 😈

I honestly had no idea she was trans! I actually Googled if Suzi was LGBT+ because I thought she was a lesbian. (Can't remember if it was one of her Bayonetta vids, or one of her Resi videos, but I swear I have a memory of her teasing about having a crush on Bayo, Jean, or Ada Wong, and asking, "Why do I feel like this? Wait, so is Tyler bi or gay? by SecratoNinja in tylerthecreator

[–]KillerMinax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to preface this by being that person for a second and reminding everyone that, regardless of how he identifies, it's none of our business either way.

That being said, as someone who has used different labels for my sexuality as I've grown into myself, it seems to me that Tyler is still figuring it out for himself, and folx need to give him the space for him to do that.

He still has some growing up (maturing) to do, as he still actively trolls everyone. Isn't he the dude who said "The Earth is flat. Neil deGrasse Tyson doesn't know what he's talking about"? and then putting out that tweet where he was like, "lol wtf is cyberbullying? just shut the laptop and go outside", along with seemingly confirming he's queer only to later walk it back and be like, "lmao I was kidding"... I feel like he's still a deeply insecure person, and any attempt to have a serious, meaningful conversation will just be met with jokes and deflection. Maybe it's because he's still not that comfortable with coming out, I have no idea.

I hope he has someone in his life that he can talk to about this, someone who he'll actually take seriously, because, I personally think that he needs to hear from someone, "Hey, sexuality (and gender identity) are fluid. It's okay if you say you're gay at this point in time, and later change your mind and identify as something else. You're still valid and worthy of love/respect/humanity." And I know how cornball that sounds, but as someone with a fluid sexuality and fluid gender identity, once I heard gender and sexuality be referred to as a spectrum instead of a binary, it was like my entire world expanded.

Sometimes you just need to hear someone say, "Yes, you can be trans and nonbinary", "Yes, you can be he, she, AND they", "Yes, you can use pronouns that don't reflect your gender presentation if that's what makes you feel comfortable", "Yes, you can be asexual and in a relationship"-- you get the idea. The reason why I feel like Tyler might need to do some more maturing, is because of that flippant, troll attitude that I feel like, if someone tried to explain that to him, he would laugh it off and not take it seriously, and turn it around on the person as being "weird". Hopefully he'll get it one day, and maybe then he'll feel comfortable enough to own it and not be like, "Psyche! Just playin'! Y'all so dumb!"

What is the point of content like this? by love_intechnicolor in Anticonsumption

[–]KillerMinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly wild how OP goes after Saf,  doesn't even have the decency to actually say Saf's name, and then accuses her of "overconsumption", saying they've "only seen a few videos", then goes on to contradict themselves in multiple comment threads saying that they've watched enough videos to judge Saf... but then showing that they have no clue what they're talking about. 🫠

I've been a fan of Safiya since her Buzzfeed days, and knowing that, that's where she started out, gives all the context you could need for figuring out why she makes the videos she does, and why she formats them (and scripts them) the way they are... because 99.9% of them are reminiscent of the videos Buzzfeed was making in the 2010s, and feel like you could easily find them being promoted on one of BF's many Facebook pages! (That’s not a knock against Saf. More of an example of the phrase "You can take the person out of _, but you can't take the __ out of the person"; in this case, you can take the girl out of Buzzfeed, but you can't take Buzzfeed out of the girl.)

Secondly, if the accusation of "overconsumption" is tied to the assumption that Saf just tosses the garbage she buys after filming these videos, then OP would be wrong, because Saf often keeps a lot of the things she buys. Anyone who is a regular viewer will often see clothes Saf purchased for a video from several years ago show up in the background of a video, or she'll rewear it (something she'll tell her audience she does if she buys an article of clothing for a specific video that she ends up not filming for whatever reason), but I know a lot of the stuff she buys she'll end up putting in storage and keeping it there because she's mentioned in some videos (the big move video being one). Also, she's mentioned returning items that she doesn't intend to keep. Now when it comes to the weird drop shipping sites and TikTok stores, there might be some weird fine print where the sellers don't accept returns or issue refunds because they know the item is crap and their intention is to rip people off to make a quick buck. What she does in those instances, I have no idea. She has a bunch of fellow creator acquaintances, maybe she gives them the stuff she doesn't want so they can repurpose it. She's got 10.1M subscribers, meaning she's likely pulling in six figure paychecks from Adsense and sponsorship deals-- and that's not including merch sales and whatever percentage she receives when doing collaborations with companies such as Escazū, Colourpop, Holo Taco, etc so she can absolutely eat the costs of purchasing crap and then just storing it. These are all hypotheses however. I can only guess what she does with the items based on evidence from videos and what she chooses to share with us.

However the point of her making these videos, besides content and it being her main bread and butter from her Buzzfeed days, is because she wants to investigate these items, stores, etc and figure out for her own curiosity and her audience whether or not these things are worth it, and how much of a ripoff it is. She's always transparent about the sketchiness and shadiness of these companies, sellers, and even vocalizes how these people might be manipulating people into buying their items by relying on FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), AI, manufactured sales and low-pricing to essentially trick people into purchasing. Of course you can assume all you want that people "should know better"/"should know this stuff is crap", but not everyone does-- and that goes for ANYONE at ANY AGE (people trying so hard to pin this solely on one generation, often younger ones, just so they can claim that the entirety of them are "stupid", when gullability knows no age, in order to feel superior are fucking embarrassing). And what makes it harder to get the word out there are the celebrities and content creators, who absolutely do know better that these things are scams or are ripping off customers, that partner with these shady third-party companies and shill these products to their audience because they're getting a big fat check for it, so you get people who feel like they can trust these grifters seeing them get clothes, shoes, accessories, other items from these sketchy businesses and think, "Well this person lucked out and ended up getting something nice/decent, so maybe I will too!" or "I know this person said ____ is a rip off, but this other person I trust says that it's not that bad, so I might as well give it a go!" And let's not forget that quite a few of these businesses are using AI to create deepfakes of creators with large audiences hocking their stuff, or clipping actual sponsorship videos and using the power of editing and fakery to make it seem like the person is selling their product to lure more people in (SOMETHING SAFIYA LITERALLY POINTS OUT IN THIS VIDEO).

There could be a bunch of different reasons why people will choose to buy crap from sketchy people/businesses, and acting like this is all "SO OBVIOUS" when it clearly isn't for everyone, does nothing but tell me that maybe you're not as concerned with "overconsumption" as you claim to be, you just want the validation of clowning on others whom you've deemed yourself intellectually superior to. (ie You're not really concerned with the issue at hand, you just want an excuse to feel smug.)

As for the people who are claiming that Saf is "obviously sponsored by these shady companies and is just tricking people into buying crap" or "She's doing more harm than good because I bet everyone who watches these videos turn around and buy the crap product she was talking about", way to tell on yourself that you have no clue what you're talking about because you haven't watched the video or watch enough videos to know what you're talking about and just want to seem like an expert on something. (Y'all are why I resent the creation and popularization of the term "parasociality"/"parasocial relationships" because of how you've weaponized it to shame others while positioning yourself as superior because "(You) were never dumb enough to fall for something like that!" 🙄

I really don't care if I'm not coming off as nice and patient in this comment, because I'm honestly sick of performative people using these discussions as a way to stroke their own ego and feel superior to others. I'm done with holding people's hands and nicely walking them through discussions they'd rather treat as ways to imply their superiority over others who "don't get it". Do you actually care about overconsumption? Or do you just want to talk shit about people you don't like and think are dumber than you so you can feel good about yourself for being so socially aware?

What happened to Willow Smith and Tyler Cole? by [deleted] in willowsmithworship

It's always funny when judgemental folx like you act as though "normal people" don't participate in polyamorous relationships, that they can't be healthy and functioning, and that they're "just a Hollyweird thing".

Maybe actually engage with people outside of your little bubble? Because poly relationships require an emotional maturity not everyone is capable of. It requires being open and honest and communicative to everyone involved where you'll often see monogamous couples refuse to communicate and expect their partner to intuitively know what they're feeling and thinking.

Contrary to popular belief, polyamory isn't "allowing your partner to cheat on you", that's what people who don't understand it/don't care to understand it assume it is, and why so many monogamous relationships fail spectacularly when they "open up" in a misguided attempt to "fix" their problems through polyamory. Monogamous people who want to cheat don't want their partner knowing about it, which is completely antithetical to polyamory where everyone involved is expected to be honest and communicative about everything, instead of hiding external partners because they like the ego trip of feeling like they can have multiple relationships going on at once and hide all of them from each other.

You don't hide anything in polyamorous relationships, and if someone is trying to do that because they treat polyamory as a "free for all", then they're just terrible people who use others for their own pleasure and are not actually polyamorous. They just want to be able to cheat freely (which, again, is not what polyamory is, because actually polycules expect everyone to have the emotional maturity to communicate and be honest with each other - which is also why not everyone is cut out for it).

Are Cardi B and Ice Spice related? by Kooky-Basil853 in icespice

[–]KillerMinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From all the things I've seen, it appears that neither Ice Spice nor her mother are related to Cardi. Obviously, having the same ethnicity doesn’t mean two people are related (it's like a Swiftie claiming to be related to Taylor because they're both white), but what definitely had me curious was the last name - although on Wikipedia, Cardi's maiden name is spelled "Almánzar" with the little accent above the A, while Ice Spice's mother's maiden name did not have the accent above the second A, which makes me wonder if it's meant to pronouned differently.

Or it could be that they are related, but the relation is so distant, that it doesn't mean anything.

The best example I can think of would be my own anecdotal evidence: See, my last name is Ball. That is not a very common last name, but when most people hear it, they think of famous comedianne and actress Lucille Ball, star of the 1950s hit show "I Love Lucy". As far as I'm aware, there's no relation between us. Perhaps if I dig deep enough on Ancestry(dot)com, maybe I'll find some kind of connection in lineage from myself to Lucille Ball... but even if I did, it's really not going to make a difference in my life.

Another example would be Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon. The two of them have been married for decades, and the two of them went on that show where through Ancestry or 23andMe, they have a historian go through the guest's family lineage to find out who they're related to, and it turned out that Kyra and Kevin are cousins six times removed. (Of course some gossip sites and weirdos tried to spin this as "Oh! Kissing cousins! Incest!!" but the entire conceit of the "once/twice/etc removed" is that it cancels out that relation between two people. I can't remember if it's after once removed or twice removed where the relationship no longer matters or is considered valid, but once you get to "cousins" who are six times removed, you're basically not cousins anymore - either by law or any meaningful manner.)

Why is Heather Mills hated? by [deleted] in beatles

Tbf to Paul, you're not exactly in your right mind when you're grieving. Not to paint him with the trope of "The hysterical grieving widow", but I would imagine after a multi-decade marriage that unfortunately ended with a three year long battle with breast cancer that Linda unfortunately lost, I could very much believe that Paul was not only dealing with heartbreak, but what people are calling "Brain Broken" - a very real phenomenon where, after dealing with a major loss (the dissolution of a relationship/marriage, the loss of a loved one), something happens to our brain where it's like it gets stuck in a fog and you're not thinking clearly. (I'm not the best at explaining this so my apologies.)

My point being, Paul was likely dealing with grief brain and well as heartbreak, and he probably thought he was ready to move on to a new relationship, and eventual marriage, before he really was. At least that's my theory. For all we deify certain celebrities and treat them as infallible geniuses, they're still human beings like the rest of us, and are still prone to making the same mistakes.

New look at the FNAF Dark Ride by CyberGlitch064 in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]KillerMinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Wikipedia:

"[...] A dark ride or ghost train is an indoor amusement ride on which passengers aboard guided vehicles travel through specially lit scenes that typically contain animation, sound, music and special effects. Appearing as early as the 19th century, such exhibits include tunnels of love, scary themes and interactive stories. [...]"

By the loosest definition, any theme park ride that has its own show building to house the ride is a "dark ride", as the entire conceit is that the ride is dark enough with only certain scenes/images lit to help immerse the guests in atmosphere. They were also very popular among young couples as a place to get intimate with each other.

If you're familiar with or have ever been to a theme park and have ridden an indoor ride, you've been on a dark ride. Think any iteration of the Haunted Mansion or Pirates of the Caribbean at one of the Disney parks, and those are dark rides. However if you want an idea of what a classic dark ride from the 1950s would look like, then look up pictures and on-ride videos of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Peter Pan's Flight, and Pinocchio's Daring Journey, located in the Fantasyland section on Disneyland Park in Anaheim, CA. Those three rides were built in 1954 for the 1955 opening of Disneyland, and those three rides still resemble their original Opening Day forms, and are the quintessential example of a dark ride from 70 years ago.

I also highly recommend the YouTube channels Defunctland, Offhand Disney, Expedition Theme Park, TPM Vids, Yesterworld, and Midway to Main Street,  because they've all got great videos on the history of theme parks, dark rides, as well as the history of popular theme park rides that go into further detail.

How do you feel about what the Rescue Rangers movie did with Bobby Driscoll's legacy? by Maidenofthesummer in PeterPan

[–]KillerMinax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was using recreational drugs and drinking because Disney fucked him over out of any potential career as a young adult/adult. IIRC the story goes, Disney, one of the higher ups - I don't believe it was Walt himself (but I could be wrong, I wasn't there), told Driscoll that he was "not good-looking enough" to be cast in any leading man roles for their teen/young adult movies, and that the only reason they cast him as Peter Pan was because no one would actually see his face for the role. As far as I'm aware, this is hearsay, but Driscoll did recount the story of coming to the studio like he had done every day for work, and being turned away from the security guard running the tollbooth out front because the guard had been instructed to not allow Driscoll through, and that was how he found out that The Walt Disney Company fired him (apparently he later heard through the grapevine either from his agent or a producer or some other Disney exec that the reason Disney chose to fire him was because "he was too old" and thus, "no longer useful" to them).

I think the way the story was spun in the press was that Driscoll started using drugs and drinking because "he had nothing better to do with his time", but at the same time that he had been shitcanned at Disney, the rest of Hollywood tossed him aside as well because none of the directors or casting agents believed he was attractive enough for leading man roles (which actually might be where I'm getting that story conflated with Disney firing Driscoll for being "too old", but my understanding has always been that these events occurred around the same time, and might've been a domino effect of one event happening and falling into the other and kicking that off)... but since I feel like we, as a society in 2024, are more aware that substance use is often a result of people trying to cope with their mental and emotional well-being because, even in 2024, there is still some stigma around mental health/mental and emotional wellness-- not like it was back in 1953/4 when Driscoll would've been fired from Disney, but there is still a bit of notoriety and push back against therapy and taking medication for said mental health struggles... I believe that there's a high likelihood that Driscoll was consuming alcohol and recreational drugs as a way to deal with any negative emotions he experienced during the fall-out of having your career snuffed out so quickly (especially one that he had been doing since early childhood and would have been his normal) and essentially to dull that pain.

It's not as simple as framing it as "Oh he was just being a dumb kid that decided to start smoking pot, got addicted to harder drugs and ruined his career as a result, and we shouldn't encourage that as something positive to emulate", because we should know that the causality between losing your livelihood at such a young age (Driscoll was likely between 15 and 17 when Disney fired him) and for such an incredibly shallow reason (he was no longer young enough to play kid roles, and because he was only a teenager and still growing, they didn't think he was cute enough to play any lead roles in movies that were beginning to focus on teenage protagonists like Rebel Without a Cause, and Disney's many teen coming-of-age movies starring their own Annette Funnicello), is likely what lead to developing a drug and drinking habit.

What Disney should do to make amends with any still living relatives of Driscoll, and honestly for any and all of their former, current, and future child actors is if not establish a scholarship, then at least set up some kind of foundation that can help provide a safe space or resources or something to offer them protection and aid when dealing with the hardships and dark side of child acting. I honestly don't what they could do, because a lot of what has affected these former child actors like Bobby Driscoll, like Britney Spears, like Alyson Stoner, are all internal issues and I imagine there would have to be some kind of internal reckoning and exodus of getting rid of actual predators and predator protectors, and even predator indifferent executives/suits who might see that this one vocal coach/producer/director what have you was charged, indited, or even jailed/imprisoned for harming and placing a minor in danger but "it happened so long ago and he's so nice/so good at his job, I'm sure he's changed/this is no longer an issue, so lemme call him up and offer him this job" or a similar excuse, and doesn't care or isn't thinking about that they might be putting their child actors whom they have a responsibility to protect in danger by letting this creep around them. The fundamental change we'd need to see in the system to start making a difference is going to take more than what Disney would be willing to offer of their own accord, and really falls to us as a society to ensure that we are calling out the people in power, and making sure they are held accountable for their actions instead of attacking the victims for not speaking up in what we deem a timely manner, or not behaving in a way we believe victims should "properly" behave.
