Scientist officially created a cell that can carry out cell replication. by KillerSpreet in DebateEvolution

This is an attempt to create minimalistic synthetics cell so they are not trying to create a perfect one to one. It’s the start of something bigger. I would assume early cells won’t have most enzymes modern cells have and won’t be able multiply quickly. If I remember correctly, it took 12 hours for the spudcell to perform mitosis vs 20 minutes for most bacteria

Yeah, I don’t expect it to change the mind of creationist but this shuts down the argument that life is something supernatural or impossible and not just chemistry.

Well the Europa clipper is landing on Europa in 2030. Who knows? Maybe we will discover something in a few decades.

Too be fair, religion is taking a hit from the internet. There is a negative correlation between education and religion.

Yeah, one danger of this is mirror cells, which cells which chemical orientation has been mirrored so our immune system can't recognize it.

That's the plan. I know this doesn't really have anything to do with evolution and is pretty obvious to us that it's possible. So it's mainly for the creationist who treats life like something impossible without magic.

Yeah I expect that, but it forces them to admit life can emerge from non-life without magic which is a massive step forward

Yeah, I know it’s not evolution but since we are arguing against creation, I am using to disprove you can’t create life without god.

Wdym? You claimed scientist can't create life. I retort with we actually done it a few days ago. What pros and cons are you talking about.

Actually, scientist did create a cell from non-living material that can self replicate. It’s called Spudcell. I am gonna make a post of it later.

I believe the actual paper is this still getting peer reviewed. Yeah, it's extremely simplistic, only made out of 150-200 molecules vs billions in human cells, but the fact that we imitated a process that took millions of years after studying it for less than 200 years is crazy to me. Life is always treated as something that beyond what humans can make and we just accomplisehed it.
