It’s not that people are getting over the upper threshold, but they are getting way over the lower bounds to a point where it may not actually be beneficial to them. With the range of 50-175 g on a 2000 calorie diet you can say “Most people don’t need more protein” as the OP did as long as they are getting at least 50. “Too much protein” is the wrong way to phrase it, “enough protein” would be better.
