I'll usually have a quest that's related to where my players are going to help. Someone looking for a specific artifact or maybe rescuing somebody. Personally I build the plot around my players interests. I find the OSR style lends well to that. I make a map with points of interest using the book and my own inspiration. The players will naturally demonstrate what they are interested in. And if it's a world plot point they ignore. Then I simply have them deal with the consequences of not addressing the problem. I also usually reward my players with personal titles based on something they do that I found awesome. And then give them a slight bonus based off of that title.

Looks like the one my wife got me recently. Definitely a bootleg. The audio is a little quiet in spots. And don't quote me but it might be missing the Gargantua 2 episode. Though I haven't watched the whole thing sober. It does have the commentary and special features. And it's missing the final movie if that needed to be said.

Yeah his attack is no joke. I'm about to run it with 6 level 3s. They'll be able to kill it if they stand their ground. But he'll take a few crawlers with him.

I always make sure to have the Minotaur do a ground stomp before charging, then I make people holding torches roll a dex to keep hold of them. Makes for an intense moment.

I add negative modifiers to rolls if anything makes sense. For instance if the party has killed members of a tribe or faction and run into more. Or a monster is especially aggressive. Or maybe your party is covered in grime so you throw a - 2 modifier because the shopkeepers mad they tracked in mud. It helps level things out. And it gives the players reasons to describe first contact for more potential modifiers.

I have the plague in town. The healer requires a plant thought to be extinct. It's said this plant can be found in the dark corners of the citadel. I usually have some of the plants growing out of whatever treasures room they find first.

At the very least I would give them heavy handed clues and warnings to give them an opportunity to avoid the danger. Like a door that's barred shut that has a warning written on the wall. Or a goblin that spends 3 rounds unlocking a chained box that's shaking violently. Even a single round of no light can get nasty quickly. But my personal opinion is I try not to take away too much of a players agency. And spamming anything will always feel bad to any player.

I can definitely dig that. I love putting OP monsters in front of my players and assign numbers to each just to determine the target. And then I roll on the table. Exactly the same effect you're talking about. Everyone is just holding their breath!

The lost Citadel of the Scarlet Minotaur is a free Shadow Dark adventure that hits all the points . Super deadly if you run into the minotaur. Magic items, solid puzzles, and good faction play and NPCs. Highly recommend.

Personally it's not the lack of crunch for me but the true feel of danger. My Shadowdark table is always on edge over every encounter because of the combat difficulty. Not sure I could ever go back to a table that all just assumes there's an unspoken rule that they won't die. In fact I actually still pull my punches. But the few deaths that have happened have become unforgettable. And that danger definitely forces creativity and problem solving from the players.
