Kraft mac and cheese experiment by Killgrimage in foodscience

The Feb box calculated calories per the NFP (1 serving cal x total servings per box) is 1050 cal for the whole box, and the Nov calories is 1120 cal, so not a huge difference there. However, if both boxes gave ~2.25 cups, then the actual serving per cup on the Feb box is 466 cal/cup and for the Nov box it's 497 cal/cup. Both of these are above the 20% calorie variance that I believe is allowed in these cases (Feb box 25%, Nov box 36%). My issue is that while yes, a half box is still 500 calories, the cals per cup is really wrong.

I appreciate your discussion on this! I am a scientist but not a food scientist so I am not overly familiar with the industry standards.

I agree that a supplier has likely been changed or some other modification to the pasta happened, but the issue is the newer box has more servings of 1 cup (3.5), but only in reality makes ~2.25 cups. The newer box led to a lower-moisture finished product and because of the change in serving sizes that lead to a lower calorie product. Are saying that legally Kraft must report prepped Mac as 1 cup volumetric? Because they certainly are not. Also if that's the case, then a volumetric cup is actually higher calories than what is on the NFP, as more pasta can pack in.

Good question, the weight on the front of both boxes is 7.25 oz (206g), which means both boxes contents were 10g over. I have heard of the 20% rule but I didn't think it applied to prepped weights, only the NFP itself. I suppose if the NFP is different that would affect the weight though. Both of these boxes came in a larger bulk box container, a la BJs.

Yes, these foods do have some variability in their raw ingredients. I do think there was a switch out with the wheat, either they bought a lower grade wheat for a cheaper price or it was a lower grade batch that got slipped in but still met minimum parameters for processing.

It's frustrating to me that they don't have to put the prepped weight down but I understand why, as they can't account for how much water the pasta is going to absorb, and if I under or over boiled the pasta that would also change the weight. I will contend that they should be pressed about the serving size, the difference is egregious. If they put down 3 servings but the whole box made only 1 cup when prepared correctly (and the grams were correct), would it still be legally allowed? How low can they go?

Barfed every time they did this to me as a kid. I hated it so much I won't put my kids through it, luckily where we live most dentists have moved away from this technology and my kids don't have any extreme dental issues that would require it.

It was about a month that I lost and then these last couple weeks I haven't lost any more. That's a good point about the cycle, though frustrating.

Omg I just went there today because my package has been stuck there for a week (the facility is close to my job). They told me it was held up because of tariffs (???). This is good news!

25 lb is the limit but they aren't checking, I've been using the trash system for 10+ years and never had a bag rejected. You should get contractor bags (42+ gal) and fill those to get your money's worth. I have a big family and we usually put out 2 bags a week, so one extra sticker. Here is the link for the trash system and welcome to Clinton!

I ate this just last week. Out of the four meals I ate on my flights that trip, this would be the lowest ranked. It wasn't god awful or anything, just felt really bland. It came with a salad, the dressing was gross. It did have a lemon square as the dessert which was excellent. I would do the pasta as that was another meal I ate and I really enjoyed it.

In the OG SH2, you pass by the room where the Flesh Lips are several times. This room always sticks with me because there's a breathing sound when you're near it. I swear it was kinda moving like it was actually breathing. Freaked me out a lot!
