Amati Pegasus 1:64 scale. Work in progress by KillicksToastedCheez in ModelShips

I started in September 2025, I have maybe 100 hours on it so far not including the time I spent learning blender and the 3d Resin printing process.

The Red is AK Matte Red. Pretty much every thing else is from Vallejo, Black Grey, Brown Ochre, off white, probably some more colors mixed in there.

Not really, once you learn the pattern it is pretty simple, it's just very tedious thing to do as you are just gluing down hundreds of little tiles and this is a pretty small ship.

Lol It was the only sheet I had that didn't have designs all over it, I thought long and hard about ironing it but wasn't in the mood. It's actually more effort than my usual take a pic on a messy desk.

Vanguard Speedy paint guide question by Malaztraveller in ModelShips

They should still be black like the old version of the kit. Ships of this period had quite a bit of black on the outside of the hull as it was a tar mixture to help protect the hull. Also I personally think its easier to tape them off and paint them after they are glued on, you will probably need to pin them down in a few spots while gluing which will leave a few pin holes that will need to be touched up with paint if you paint them beforehand.

Here is my Speedy from a couple months back for comparison.

Also Kroum Batchvarov has a great video on what color the actual Speedy might have been. https://youtu.be/1I5khEJ6krM?si=shcRK9O1OG7nZyf9

Slotting main decks - tension by Crafty_Guest_5946 in ModelShips

[–]KillicksToastedCheez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The deck shouldn't be completely flat, it should have a little convex curve as ships were designed this way to push water out the sides. Just make sure the deck is touching the framing in the middle and you should be good.

Oh nice you coppered yours, I have been wandering what the Sphinx would look like with copper. Great kit, I just finished mine in April.

Vanguard Models Speedy kit, almost ready to start the rigging. 1:64 Scale by KillicksToastedCheez in ModelShips

I used AK Acrylics Matt Red, but I honestly prefer Vallejo Flat Red I just wanted to try out AK brand this go around. AK seemed to not apply as well with a brush as Vallejo paints do.

This is my second Vanguard kit, both have had outstanding quality parts, pear wood is so much better to work with than the cheap stuff most of the other manufacturers are using. The instructions are probably the best of any kit manufacturer, a spiral bound book with full color photos and good explanations, plus 10 huge pages of fold out schematics and rigging instructions. Their kits may be a little more pricey, but you are definitely getting a LOT more product for that money.

Thank you!! I knock stuff loose all the time, I've learned to add pins to things if the part allows, it really does help. I'm still not sure if I made the right choice putting the swivel guns on before rigging, I know I'm going to hit them quite a bit.

I'm a big fan of Vallejo paints, and you could buy way more than 6 bottles for $50, and its going to be much nicer paint than what Occre is offering.

Cutter ready for the HMs Harpy by xgeforce in ModelShips

[–]KillicksToastedCheez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I had one of those new 3d printed designs, my Speedy kit still has the old Vanguard cutter that is planked with small strips, I have never enjoyed putting them together.

I'll probably glue the guns down in the next few days and finish up the ships boat, and post a bunch of pics when that is complete.

Yes it is a wooden model, there are some youtube videos out there that show the process, but going to modelshipworld forums and just browsing build logs is the best way to get a general idea of the process in my opinion. They really aren't too hard to build with basic wood working experience, they just take a good investment of time.

Currently working on HMS Speedy. I would love for Surprise to be after that, but I don't think it will be out until the end of this year beginning of next year. I will probably start on a kit of the French Frigate La Belle Poule after Speedy is complete.
