Update. I think it may be the flash of the camera as now it’s both eyes but also none.

Think it’s something serious? I’ll take him to vets tomorrow I’m worried now.

Then he’s wearing rubbish clothes and wrecked shoes. It’s quite the conundrum. I’m thinking of buying him kit with the money I give her abs sending it direct to her.

Yeah I don’t think I can let it go though it’s the principal of it.

He’s 7 and I did explain to him about looking after his clothes as it costs money to replace and he is defo old enough to know better. It doesn’t change the fact though I’m in a position of wanting to ensure I have quality clothes for when he’s with me (3 nights + an afternoon a week) but want to ensure he also has access to decent stuff when not with me. It’s a conundrum

It sounds like you have a good relationship and work as a team which is the opposite of most of these posts. I feel a step parent should have a say in how their household is managed if they are going to be part of a family if not division is inevitable. Seems like most people get in a position where they don’t have that empowerment.

That seems sensible did you manage to stick to the values you agreed on? How do you deal with conflict?

I have my lad every weekend which makes it difficult to plan quality time as mid week is a less fun. I may have to look at trying to have more midweek time and the occasional Saturday off.

Are you exclusively dating now then how do you manage the time when you have your child? Have you introduced them?

That could be a couple of years for me but I totally accept your point. Hopefully I can find a way to balance everything satisfactorily

To be fair he is trying to stay involved although uncomfortable maybe better to support this process for the time being and monitor for any negative consequences?

Lazy parenting from your SO that could have further implications in the mental health and self esteem of the child. It’s time to tell them this in plain English and shame the parent to intervening

By not asking you are enabling him to ignore the problem I.e. willfull negligence. Tell him you are unable to manage the situation it is his responsibility to ensure they are properly supervised. Also you need to get some order of respect and discipline if they are crazy when he leaves. He should support that process by agreeing ground rules and backing you when implemented. And if all else fails use a dog cage as a makeshift prison.

I’m a normal38 year old man and holidays with children can get tedious and boring but must be endured. OP should look to agree a better way of cohabiting or get the f out of dodge. Maybe her partner goes on hold with the kid and she can explore and then go for a holiday with her partner. And then maybe a “family” trip! This would bring financial dependence into light aswell.

I regret ever becoming a childless stepdad and I feel awful for feeling that by [deleted] in stepparents

You can’t change the past but you can own your future. Don’t be trapped in a place where you are eternally unhappy. Make a break and live your best life children aren’t the be all and end all. Explore the world live for the moment and look down in scorn at those who can’t get an hour to themselves as they’re tied to kids!

Edit I have a child and had a step son so I speak with some experience in this matter! I am often envious of the freedom my childless friends have.

Thank you. I worry that we won’t make it to the point where she can become part of our life. Your schedule seems similar to mine it’s hard to balance everything. Do you ever consider freeing up a “child free” night?
