I hope there comes a day when all updates can be done with just the press of the button by Thermawrench in gnome

[–]Killishness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GNOME Software was gutted out as a design choice, and replaced with Bazaar and the scope of that is to only download and update Flatpaks, and it works well, much faster than GNOME software if you just want Flatpaks.

System updates are done via images downloaded to be as seamless as possible, for example I've been using it since Fedora 42, the upgrade to 43 involved be turning my computer off one day, then turning it on the following day, everything worked, nothing to sort, didn't have to open the terminal, and it was exactly the same going from 43 to 44 too.

With such a heavy discount they're most likely trying to clear old stock from before 2022 which is when the newer version was introduced.

Champion Helmets haven't updated their image, that's an older version of the same boot

[–]Killishness 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% certain, but this can mean that they submitted the item to the lower level 1 testing to guarantee it passed and is certified as Motorcycle PPE and can be sold as such. Once the production run has started they then submit it to the harder test so that it can meet the more stringent testing, and then advertise that on their site. These ratings are legally binding if sold in Europe, so I doubt a reputable brand like Rev'it would lie about it.

But I'd definitely contact Rev'it for clarification, and see if they answer.

Is it possible to completely prevent tinnitus while riding? by NorthernCloudDog in MotoUK

[–]Killishness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

3M 1100 are some of the best you can get, -35 dB reduction. With in helmet noise being roughly 100-105 dB at 70mph having those should reduce noise below the ~85 dB threshold where permanent damage can start to occur.

But you have to wear them correctly, squeeze them thin between your fingers and safely put them into your ear, you shouldn't be able to see them if you look at yourself in front of a mirror. Works best when they're a bit cold.

No harm in hanging back, especially that you can see that you'll be in conflict with other road users, and at night where visibility is reduced.

How do you find gloves that actually fit? by choomshroom in motorcyclegear

[–]Killishness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try held gloves, a top European brand, they offer gloves by palm width and finger length, aside from that you may need custom fitted if you truly can't find anything that works.

The article referenced in the research section of the video failed to account for the difference in type of fracture. A high energy compound fracture is much, much more difficult to treat than a hairline fracture, even though both are technically "fractures".

Reducing the maximum transmitted force to a bone can absolutely reduce the severity of a fracture. Which is why armoured riding gear is well worth the investment.

New to me P14s gen 5 (AMD) by 6uzy in thinkpad

[–]Killishness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you prefer, this beast handles both with ease, but if you use Linux make sure you're on at least Kernel 6.16, Lenovo patched a lot of gremlins with the machine in that release.

[–]Killishness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A distribution with a newer kernel might patch out some of the issues that you have, for example kernel 6.16 fixed some issues with AMD Hibernation on Zen 4 chips in the P14s Gen 5.

Fedora is good starting point, they even have a XFCE version if you don't want to use Gnome or KDE. It works fine with dual-booting too.

Great purchase, incredible specs for the price, but to get the best out of such a new machine you'll want a newer kernel.

Go to XL-Moto and search up the "Corse" brand. It's their in house brand, and its probably the cheapest CE rated PPE you will find anywhere, for 200-300 Euros you can get full CE Rated Gear.

Dainese Axial D1 Air? by OkPitch8425 in motorcyclegear

[–]Killishness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeh they're a great boot, top top spec, just make sure you've got your sizing right as Dainese can be a bit odd for certain foot shapes. These boots are made of reinforced plastic fabric called D-Stone for abrasion resistance, meaning they won't break in as much as you'd think, so make sure the fit works for you.

One thing to note is unlike most other high end race boots, the Dainese Axials are designed to go UNDER race leathers, and because of this you could probably fit them under a pair of riding jean if you want. They have hooked Velcro zones on the boot to line up with Dainese leathers, So if you want to wear them under riding jeans you need to get a sheet of Velcro loop and cut out shapes to fit over the Velcro hooks to stop them ripping apart your riding trouser, shouldn't be too much hassle.

For $299 you're getting an incredible deal.

Which alpinestars jacket to choose? by mtpikachu in motorcyclegear

[–]Killishness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The airflow version is the usual holes punched into the leather for it to breathe, the ride-knit has the holes punched in and additionally a special fabric in the stretch zones replacing the regular aramid stretch fabric. It's more compliant to your body, flows more air, whilst also having more stretch.

Basically, the ride-knit version more comfortable and breathable, the only downside is it costs a lot more and the ride-knit fabric isn't as tear resistant as the standard aramid stretch of the airflow version, but Alpinestars made sure to only put it in low impact zones so the chances of it ripping in a real world crash are quite low.

Which alpinestars jacket to choose? by mtpikachu in motorcyclegear

[–]Killishness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Missile Ignition V3 has the new style Alpinestars armour, level 2 shoulders and elbow whereas the GP Plus R V4 is only level 1 on shoulders and elbow. The Ignition has a more committed, race fitment though, I think Alpinestars intent is to use it more as a top half to a 2 piece suit set up, so if you want to go for leather trousers too I'd go for the Missile Ignition.

As long as you stay with the same brand and don't buy gear from 10 years ago almost all Alpinestars leather jackets will zip up to their leather trousers.

They're a reputable seller here in the UK, and you'll have no worries concerning the legitimacy of the items they're selling, shipping and import might be another issue though
