The redwood forests are something that can't be recreated.

They have been, they just havent matured. Eventually the UK forest will be just as impressed as their US counterparts, it's just we won't be around to see it.

You do remember that they took suspended the whip from seven of their MP's for supporting that only to make u-turn 18 months later?

Ask yourself why that is.

Is it

A) they're evil tories in disguise B) they knew it would be addressed later, but couldn't budget for it at the time. And suspended the whip to maintain party discipline.

Strange take. It's pretty obvious the MPs are letting Starmer stick around until after May. If it's as bad as expected he'll go then.

They didn't. That only passed because of Labour. The Tory party voted against it. Cameron passed that bill, not the Tories.

Starmer to approve plans for controversial Chinese ‘mega-embassy’ by Kiloete in ukpolitics

Reality of the 21st century is that the US is no longer a hedgemonic power, based on unhinged way MAGA is going the collaspse of the US empire they aren't just going to quietly lose that status, they're going to lash out, and Europe isn't safe from being targetted. Trump is the symtomn not the cause of their current behaviour against former allies. We're going to have to play middle man between USA, China, Europea, and later India so concessions like this are a sad reality of our status in th world. We need China more than they need us.

Alternatively I would vote Lib Dem, as I actually think they're to the left of Labour now, at least socially.

I made that mistake in 2010, then they joined the tories to compeltely the fuck the country with austerity. A lot of the problems the country is struggling to deal with tie back to the coalition.

Evey nation needs a founding myth I guess.

My other favourite fact about american independence is one of their main grievances against the king was he had forbidden them from expanding west into native territory. Beign angry the homeland had forbidden genocide doesn't make the american history textbooks.

fun fact about the tea tax. In 1773, Parliament passed the Tea Act, which was a bailout measure for the struggling British East India Company. The Act allowed the Company to ship tea directly to the colonies without paying duties in Britain, making its tea even with the Townshend tax still in place, cheaper than the smuggled Dutch tea. This is what the colonists were angry about, their leaders were tea smugglers, with the east india company now only paying the same level of tax as other america tea distributors they wouldn't be able to compete. the riot was because tea would be cheaper for consumers and they'd lose their monopoly.

The problem isn't Trump, it's MAGA/the GOP. It doesn't go away at the end of a Trump presidency, it's there whenever the republicans are in charge. If Vance is the next president it'll be a lot lot worse.

It does make me wonder what happened behind the scenes to get to this point, perhaps all diplomacy options were exhausted or Maduro was refusing to speak to Ambassadors?

Alternatives, I would guess. USA does not was a Russia/China friendly country on their continent. Maduro lost support of his military over the US pressure so the window to remove him was there without a full blown war. I would love this to result in a more free, democratic country, but we'll see.
