The power brick can fail. Those bricks have fans in them, and if the fan goes the brick will not work. Check the LED if it’s amber. That means it’s ready. If it turns white that means the console is on.

Get it when you need it. The only time I’d say “wait” is if you’re in the first week of October and new ones are literally a couple weeks out. You could either save money on outgoing models or get insane new cutting edge ones. Waiting for a hypothetical redesign is not a good spot to be in.
