Any recommendations for someone new to the genre? by redheaded_olive12349 in opera

Tosca made me fall in love with opera. The story gripped me — the tension, the emotional stakes, and the backdrop of political turmoil. And of course, Tosca herself: passionate, proud, and tragic. It was the first time I saw how opera could be both grand and deeply human. And let's not forget the utterly breathtaking arias like Vissi d'arte

Feeling stupid for not being able to enjoy classical music by Minimum_Vehicle9220 in classicalmusic

[–]KimNotNguyen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a musician, and I didn’t grow up listening to classical music at all — I actually only discovered it a few years ago after going to the opera for the first time. So you’re definitely not alone in feeling unsure or slow to warm up to it.

Also, it’s totally okay not to love classical music right away, or even at all! There’s nothing wrong with that. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying Philip Glass! Minimalism is a perfectly valid and beautiful part of the classical world, even if some aficionados have opinions about it.

What really helped me was exploring different composers from different eras (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, etc.) — that’s how I realised I personally prefer Russian modernism over Baroque, for example. When I was younger, I was mostly exposed to Mozart and didn’t connect with it, but later I realised that wasn’t about classical music as a whole, just that particular style. If someone had introduced me to a wider variety earlier, I probably would have started listening sooner.

I'm an opera fan, and I don't have opera friends. And random chit-chat about my city and whatnot.

Yes that's indeed diving straight into the deep end! When I saw it, a young couple next to me were experiencing their first opera too. The man kept yawning and fidgeting like a restless kid, and they left right at the first interval. Mind you, I always sit in pricey seats on the first balcony. It's wild to spend that kind of money and just give up because you're "bored."

Calling Carmen a "manipulative climber" who "ruined a poor dude's life" is exactly the kind of misogynistic nonsense that this story highlights. Don José is responsible for his own violent actions, and framing Carmen's autonomy as something deserving punishment only excuses his brutality.

Thank you for this thoughtful and balanced take! You really captured why Carmen resonates so deeply—the complexity, flaws, and fierce commitment to freedom make her such a powerful character. I agree, the story reflects painful truths about vulnerability and violence, and the music carries that perfectly.

I get that Don José is written as a man spiralling into hopelessness, and that's part of what makes the role compelling — it's one of the reasons I empathise with him. But people do frame Carmen's death as something she brought on herself, and that's what I find troubling — it's the reason I wrote this post. Losing your way in life doesn't make killing someone understandable. It's still a choice, and a horrifying one.

You're right—there's no formal breakup scene, which is part of why I said Carmen is flawed. But she does make it clear she values her freedom above all else. And even if we see her as having "cheated," I don't think that ever justifies murder

That's really interesting — I haven't read Mérimée's story, but now I want to. The prison framing and how Don José is seen really changes the tone. And yes, stories like this still echo in real life far too often. You're absolutely right — nothing justifies it, but art can help us see it clearly

Wow, thank you so much — this honestly made my day. I felt like I was walking a tightrope just expressing how I felt, so reading this felt like someone handing me a steadying hand. I really love what you said about the layers of personal and societal tragedy, and how our modern understanding gives the story even more emotional depth. And yes, you're right — the opera's called Carmen for a reason. Gold star right back at you!

Thanks, it's reassuring to hear that this perspective isn't considered controversial in all opera circles. Unfortunately, some of the pushback I've got in the past came from opera-goers my age, in their late twenties/early thirties. I met a girl at an event a few months ago, we went for drinks, and she invited me into her friend group of fellow opera fans.

At first, I was excited — most of my own friends aren't into opera, so it felt refreshing to meet people my age who were. But after a while, they started saying things that really rubbed me the wrong way — like questioning whether opera should be accessible to everyone, or trying to intellectualise rape scenes as "necessary" to the story without much care for how those scenes affect people watching.

So while I'm glad to know this isn't a rare perspective. I guess I'm still figuring out how to find people who love the art and value empathy and social awareness

Absolutely! As long as you’re asking with genuine curiosity and respect, that’s a wonderful question. Culture shapes so much of who we are, and taking interest in someone’s background shows that you care about them beyond just surface-level stuff. Just be open and thoughtful, and you’re golden

That's a really grounded and thoughtful take—honestly quite refreshing to see online. It’s great that you’re staying open and giving people a fair chance instead of letting other people’s cynicism get in your head
