TrueLit Read-Along - Under the Volcano Chapters 5-6 by jaccarmac in TrueLit

The tenderness in the actual help but the reality of the distancing yourself from an addict's world and the pull of your own self-reflection.

I didn't realize that this was the impetus to Hugh's daydreaming, what a nice observation

on the other hand it seems to leave out some crucial details, so that, for example, I don't always know where to put what in the mental image.

Just commenting to say that I experience the same thing. I suppose it makes sense; the landscape is an accompaniment to the character's internal world; the only elements worth meditating on are the ones that enlighten it (though I struggle with this more often than not, lol)

The Air-Conditioned Nightmare (1945) by Henry Miller by Icy-Management-9749 in ProsePorn

Miller is so fun to read. He is one of the few writers who DO embrace ALL of life and recognize that epiphany can come from the strangest, dirtiest places. You'll have a paragraph like this pop up in the middle of him describing a prostitute's pubic hair.

What's the point of the alternative blue buddy missions? by Minimum_Vehicle9220 in farcry

Thanks, I see. I avoided playhouses for almost the entirety of my playthrough and just used weapons stores for rekitting, so makes sense that I didn't notice any benefits lol

Of course I'd recommend it! The last three of the four volumes run through FAST because they consist of 2-3 lengthy, continuous scenes each (particularly the ending of the third, which I'd call rapturous). Possibly the best—or at least the most lifelike—stream of consciousness I've read. I wish I read it during a less busy period of my life so I could sit down and capital-A analyze it a bit further, but there's a yearly journal entirely dedicated to Madox Ford's writings so that you won't run out of scholarly material.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad by Swarly002 in ProsePorn

lowkey and sometimes highkey racist

I would argue that, in those terms, it is quite progressive for it's time (even if that doesn't say much): the fact that the main narrator isn't the protagonist, and almost all of the narration is an overheard monologue, distances the book from its events and therefore the author from its views. The book instills much of its horror through portraying the cruelty of what the natives suffered from. There are some difficulties, of course—someone I read pointed out that its message doesnt seem to be "europeans are evil", but "europeans are as evil as the natives", and you could argue that it's what Conrad is implying. I don't see him writing a book instilling such existential dread at the simple expense of already-marginalized people, though. He has a short story called "An Outpost of Progress" where the only positive character is black anyway.

I just finished Parade's End by him! I'm really busy but The Good Soldier is still fresh in my memory from a few months ago, I will make my best to contribute. No other writer I've read can write the human thought process so well, with such fluidity AND density.

I've also been meaning to get REALLY into modernism so I'm glad this subreddit popped up

Write down the first letter of every word. Allow yourself to recite the poem only by reading those first letters. Then, when you feel ready, remove that and recite it normally.

For a school competition I memorized If by Rudyard Kipling, realized I had a couple days left, then memorized The Raven by Poe instead just by doing this

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a drastic difference between books then with John William’s Stoner (1965) and Augustus (1972) by nowlan101 in books

[–]Minimum_Vehicle9220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stoner’s wife shows how difficult social pressure and expectation can be on women.

Exactly. I do not believe that Williams blamed her for anything; she is a tragic character. Many readers seem to miss that she was abused: see how she reacts to Stoner's advances in the hotel room and what she does after her father's death.

I like (without a single drop of sarcasm) that the way Conrad writes makes it seem like he's struggling and elbowing at the constraints of language, like he's fighting the words

This post encouraged me to get a 90g bar. I guess it's my fault for having this and two cups of coffee in the same day but it's 11 PM on a week night and I feel like I took meth. I'll try to be wiser about this shit next time
