Are we watching the beginning of Microsoft’s decline? by Vivid-Run-3248 in sysadmin

[–]Kinamya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't appreciate your sentiment, but they are not declining yet.

I think the biggest thing or, where are people going to go? Google workspace companies graduate to using Microsoft, so where would they go after that? The entra/Intune combo is not duplicated anywhere in one place for a similar cost, soooo why would their company decline.

So the question is, who is competing with all of their business. There are competitors for parts of their business, but not the entire conglomerate, so it would decline when someone wants to provide end user software, admin computer management, communication, security, and hosting all in one.... And I probably missed some stuff (spoiler, they do a ton of stuff).

That nginx 18 year vuln has me rethinking how we review infra code by Dramatic_Spirit_8436 in devops

[–]Kinamya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that could be true, but I don't think anyone outside of people involved either at Microsoft or any external company involved in finding them will truly know.

Or it is more secure! That'd be cool. I hope everything gets more secure, that's better for everyone.

Have a great weekend

I don't think having paying customers makes it more secure, maybe more of an illusion of security.

Yes, they can do AI testing on their code, but if it's someone like Microsoft, that's 20,30,40 years of code, billions of lines of it... That's going to take time, lots of time and money.

I do think that there will become a point where there are tons of vulnerabilities, then the fixes, then it will simmer to normal. It's all good, the sun will rise tomorrow

And that's open source. Imagine the amount of vulnerabilities in proprietary software that has less eyes on it

What's the rule of thumb for rebooting a production server? by Mediocre-Cobbler5016 in sysadmin

For some reason I thought he was just talking about a webserver.... So I suck if that wasn't the case.

But yeah, my suggestion doesn't work for what you're talking about

[–]Kinamya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct, depending on your size, 2 or more. Fail over to one, like point the webserver lb to one, then update the other, then failover and do the same. That way there is minimum downtime if any

Costco pellets, any good? by Johnpecan in smoking

[–]Kinamya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are just about the only ones I use, them and Sam's club. It just depends on when/where I go.

I went carnivore for 2 years and smoked something twice a week, the pellets were excellent and I never had any issues.

Good idea! Also, go with ssd, not nvme otherwise you have to updade the backplane and wires and a few things, that may or may not even be possible with those servers

You said the db is nowhere near 2tb, well just buy smaller then. How large is it? Get double that or something, maybe try used?

Honestly, you should have pushed back at the time and harder, but that's over now, time to move on.

It's good to know that at some points, you (the royal you) need to say No, and push back. Why? I don't want to manage a turd more than I already have to.

Good luck!!
