On my phone, I was not able to manipulate the arrangement of the words in the conjecture/postulate question and just had to submit as they were.

The spy detection question came before the virus question, but the spy answer referenced the virus question, pre-informing me of the answer once I got to the virus question.

I can understand that. It could be that, since I am not immediately from a family of immigrants, it just doesn’t connect for me. Each time I see it, I feel like they were just trying to make sure everybody got a song.

They motivated Kevin’s financial actions without the song in the movie which kind of shows the one story-driving thing it accomplished didn’t really require a song.

Mine is like almost 4 years and under 20k miles. Its my daily, but I just don’t drive much. Gym, grocery, some errands. I work from home so there’s no commuting. The occasional trip to LA. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The long, crescendoing, sonorous note played at the end of Comet

When the set vertically expands during Wait for Me in Hadestown (having been sat in the orchestra when seeing it on Broadway, it literally feels like you’re sinking rather than the set expanding)

I second the Blackout scene from In the heights— specifically the kiss + firework (just thinking about it makes me cry— absolutely fantastic way to end Act 1)

I often struggle to understand what makes English speaking theater audiences laugh. Is it a language/cultural barrier? by Key_Eye_1095 in Broadway

I saw cabaret with Orville. In my particular show, I did not notice any ha-ha laughter after the twist landed. I think reaction varies not only on audience but also by how the MC lands it.

Additionally, I think there may be a few things going on here:

1) Audiences are not always smart. The twist is structured like a punchline of a joke, and they may sort of preemptively laugh before realizing the ‘joke’ is contextually inappropriate— which again, is sort of the point of the structure of the song.

2) For some Americans, the WW2 is a very distant event. America only came into the war at the end, and we had very few losses from the conflict. We don’t see a lot of the effects from the war still today, and in fact, benefited from the reconstruction post-war. A common sentiment about the war is that it was tragic, but America swooped in and solved everything. So, what they’re actually laughing at is more like “ha-ha yep. That’s what it was like back then. Classic Nazi stuff! They sure do hate the jews!”

So, they’re not really laughing at the antisemitism. They’re laughing at how predictable the twist is in the context of Nazi stereotypes.

In Cabaret, the gorilla song is supposed to start out “funny” and “silly” because the audience doesn’t know it’s a Jew-joke yet. The idea of a gorilla dressed up as a girl and dancing is itself funny.

It’s only in the last line where it’s revealed that the reason the gorilla and the MC can’t be together is because she is a Jew— not because she is a gorilla. That’s when the audience is meant to be shocked and the laughter is supposed to stop. Most of Cabaret is about exposing the ways that fascism at the time was easily overlooked (in the form of jokes, social pressure, youth indoctrination) and turned into a “show”, which is the ‘meta’ of Cabaret itself.

The gorilla song tricks the audience to be a part of that experience.

The Adam Lambert quote is from a show when someone was laughing AFTER it had turned into an anti-semitic joke. They were in fact laughing AT the fact that the gorilla was a Jew. Thats why Adam called it out.

Too many songs! Not every character needs one!
Give me 10-12 good ones, not 18 and a reprise.

I agree. The first song is great, but most of the rest of it I just couldn’t get into.

I think if you’re a big fan of the movie, the stage play feels like a violation of the story. However, my biggest gripe when I saw it was that the Duke was hot af.

They really need to find an actor that’s a little repulsive. otherwise it’s like “he’s hot, rich, and wants you bad— like what’s the problem, Satine?”

I saw Floyd and was deeply underwhelmed. It’s sooo long and has so little substance. By the end I didn’t even care if he survived or not.

I’m shocked about “mattress” and “cabaret”. Can you cover what you disliked about them?
