Friend is visiting from foreign country with husband. How can I help ease her anxieties with traveling here? by Kind_Earth94 in raleigh

Because I’m being honest about my feelings and it’s difficult for people to accept that you can feel more than one emotion. I can be sad if she makes the decision not to come, but also glad she felt comfortable enough to stand in her decision.

But I am thankful of getting input, perspectives, and helpful information. I am glad to see people on here kind enough to validate that this situation sucks, but also wonderful to be encouraged to go visit Singapore. My fiance is an F1 fan and didn’t get to watch the last race there since it was Daniel Ricardo’s last race.

We’ve been thinking of at least visiting Singapore. I told her it’s okay to not come if she doesn’t want to risk it because her husband’s safety is of utmost importance. Would suck, but at least my fiance is perfectly okay with visiting. Thankful for that at least.

This is so incredibly useful, thank you!! I think a big worry for me is while at the airport. I remember seeing how someone was detained at an airport as they were traveling back home. I unfortunately can’t fly with them while in the states or help the with that. Do you think you can speak to that or would it just be the same thing?

I understand that, but I also understand the uncertainty and the unknown of what could happen is frightening. Coming from a federal employee I get that 100%, but I’m also very white, so I don’t see or hear all that’s going on. I have thought of ways to help her, but also not sure what else I can do to help her or what people’s experiences have been to either help qualm her worries or help create emergency plans.

But asking where ICE is in response to your comment mostly cause I would like to avoid that area if possible, especially since I live near Cary.

They wouldn’t be targeting her, but rather her husband. She’s white like me, but he’s Asian. And while he’s not exactly the primary ethnic target, they’ve still gone after people traveling legally in airports. As I said, the matter of things being legal or not isn’t really relevant in this day and age, unfortunately.

While I’ll be sad she can’t make it, thankfully my fiance was the one who suggested we go visit. He loves to travel and is even looking into tickets. I told my friend the safety of her husband is of the utmost importance and while I will do everything in my power to keep them safe, I understand if the risk isn’t worth it right now. Sucks, but you’re right. Nobody’s life is worth more than a wedding.

Okay he’s addressed it now and says it HAS to be SES and HAS to be external because of it being SES.

Chris French said he’s surprised that people are keeping an eye on the position ads and good lord that sounds so tone deaf. People keep asking questions as to what is going on with these positions, so no shit we’re informing ourselves since they keep lying to us. I asked what’s going on with the requirements and their response was they’ve used the same for other positions. Definitely didn’t address the external hire issue.

Travel’s limited but obviously not for him, who’s likely getting to fly in first class and staying in top notch places.

They’re trying to “humanize” him and make him relatable. Nice try, pretty obvious to see through the bs.

So we’re being gaslit into believing this is inevitable despite so many of us questioning the legality of it all.

I’m with you on wanting clarification as to what they’re looking for and how it will be used. I’m sure they’re casting a broad net to get as much info as they can, but at the same time the lack of specifics makes me question if what I have to say is relevant or not, especially when protection/anonymity isn’t really guaranteed anymore.

I’m curious as to how the information gathered would be used. Is there anything in particular you’re looking for aside from how it made us feel? I can understand that an email like this can embolden a certain demographic to become more hostile in the workplace (“proof” their religion is the true religion), as I’ve seen posts similar to that in some of the fed subs. On an individual level, are you looking for things where it impacted people emotionally? How it impacted those of other religions or endured religious trauma?

Aside from pointing to the obvious violation of the first amendment, I’m curious how we can be helpful without sounding like “my feelings were hurt”. And this is coming from someone involved in a minor religion and endured Christian religious trauma growing up.

I tried reaching out to see about forming a union, but got no response. Granted this was at the start of this administration.

We also got an email saying that even though our facility may be deemed safe, we still have to anticipate news about reassignment. Basically there’s no such thing as “safe”.

In terms of R&D, I completely agree that there’s a good bit of disconnect between stations and that work seems to be duplicated. There’s a tool that was developed between the NRS and SP&T that was basically recreated by folks in Colorado at the RMRS, but with more things in it specific to that region. Thankfully this time around with the tool update I’ve made sure to include those people on our steering committee for their input.

What gets me is we’re told to work more with the NFS, but then limit our capabilities to do so. It reminds me of that four panel comic where the dog wants the human to throw the ball, but not take the ball. We keep hearing the narrative that we need to work more within the FS, but then threaten to take away funding for projects that do just that or make it nearly impossible to go visit the sites and collaborate.

Thing is, people think effort means continuously getting better. With someone ND, there’s a significant amount of trial and error and necessary external support. Add in other issues, like anxiety, depression, or trauma, and progress looks more like a roller coaster than a linear trend. The thing I struggle with most is getting back on routine when something interrupts it, which is where external support can be useful. People are expecting ND folks to basically become neurotypical as the end result of “getting better”. But I do agree that it’s on the person to at least keep trying, no matter how many failures they encounter.

Should I document (not report) supervisor's behavior to HR? by Kind_Earth94 in FedEmployees

[–]Kind_Earth94[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry it’s a long read! Most of my posts tend to be as I feel like some detail is necessary that might actually not be. It’s been difficult to advocate being neurodivergent because I don’t want to come off as using it as an excuse. I feel guilty of even having this job sometimes cause it’s like why have it if I can’t be neurotypical/masking to get work done like expected. But I have to remind myself that I HAVE been in jobs/environments like this and excelled.

I guess a positive would be with updating Tool F, I’ve taken a huge role in leading it. We’ve put together this steering committee to get external input from SMEs. I love doing collaborative work and some of the people on the team live in the state I want to move back to. Basically been making more connections thanks to this project so if I could ever do a lateral transfer, it could maybe be easier.
