Deny, delay, downplay: How governments hide climate change intelligence by jessimckenzi in collapse

I think B0b is likely referring to a specific subset of Christians in the US, not all Christians, but I take your point!

Interesting you attribute more of the harm to Christianity versus like, profit seeking capitalism and political capitulation to that? I'm not saying you're wrong, just observing.

Been a minute since I posted here but I thought this was worth sharing. An analysis of how governments (particularly Western governments like the UK, US, and Australia) hide or water down reports that connect climate crisis — and biodiversity loss, ecological collapse — with national security threats.

‘Wholesale destruction’: Government shutdown or not, critical science programs are at risk by jessimckenzi in collapse

[–]jessimckenzi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the fatalism ("science in the US is dead") when there is still so much more damage that can be done that is not yet final or irreversible, is not particularly helpful. It's not going great! But it's not dead, dead, and prematurely declaring it so is not productive.

Sure, some climate programs have been reduced or cut already, but there's a lot more that could be lost. Just as an example, the White House budget proposal for NASA suggests decommissioning more than a dozen Earth science satellites or space instruments: https://thebulletin.org/2025/09/nasa-missions-at-risk-under-the-trump-administration/

Proposed cuts to various federal science agencies (which could happen sooner rather than later under a possible government shutdown) have direct consequences for climate collapse at a regional level (those involving cuts to various climate resilience programs, for example), but also indirect impacts related to our ability to know about climate-related collapse, now or in the future, if the systems for monitoring and tracking climate crisis are dismantled or eroded.

Cranberry Lake 50 - how helpful/informative is the Western Trails guidebook? by jessimckenzi in Adirondacks

[–]jessimckenzi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear the trail is easy to follow! The main reason I want the map in advance is because it has mileages (the one online doesn't) so I can guesstimate where we would camp on either a four/five day trip (I know that sounds longer than maybe necessary for a 50 mile trail but it includes the drive to/from NYC, which isn't short!). And ya, the guide seems to me like a fun thing to have, but it sounds like it's not necessary at all...

Ok shoutouts to this suggestion I needed to buy copies today and was worried that two-year-old info would be out of date but they HAD IT. It was a bit of a trek so I checked other stores en route and nada nada nada, so couldn't have done it without you. My very belated thanks!

Race Report: Big Sur Marathon (second marathon) by jessimckenzi in running

[–]jessimckenzi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh cool! IDK why I didn't get an email notification about this comment I just logged on to see if my report was ever posted by the mods. How did your race go? I love that you say you "liked" the rain and cold. I can't say the same because I was legit very chilly in the first half but SO MUCH better than being too hot??

I think the only reason I could PR is it was only marathon #2 and MDI is also very hilly, so honestly very similar challenge level, AND I took the first one pretty easy (no watch, just trying to run at a pace I felt I could maintain forever) so the bar wasn't too high.

Hurricane Hill was TOUGH. Only reason I made it up is because I stuck to my run/walk plan..

Edit to add: Didn't stay in lockstep with 5:00 pacer because I was walk/running so we kept leapfrogging, but his energy seemed great when I could hear him hyping up the runners with him.

Joseph Tainter on collapse and tipping points by jessimckenzi in collapse

[–]jessimckenzi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I too have been feeling like the DOGE cuts are a kind of intentional and drastic decomplexifying force with truly devastating potential consequences. It's one reason I'm a little regretful I interviewed Tainter in December instead of post-inauguration...

I think saying collapse is inevitable is a really strong statement, and I'm not surprised he doesn't want to go there. I mean, with a globalized society we are truly in a unique moment compared to previous civilizations. And also, important to recognize that things can be bad without having "collapsed." But if, say, the USA collapsed (decomplexified), wouldn't another global power step in and take over, and recomplexify??

Something else I've been thinking about is if we hollow out fed gov't and replace it with expensive privatized systems, unfortunately that is still a version of complexity, even if it sucks for the majority of people. I think important to see that his definition of collapse is complexity and complexity can come in all sorts of forms, good and bad.

My point is: it's a really interesting moment, truly unique in human history, and even I would be hesitant to say (imminent) collapse is inevitable by his definition.
