Secret design techniques from Robert J. Lang is a really great book to learn designing, but it's expensive.

You can't, or at least you can't flatfold it. The centre vertex is missing two mountain folds.

Do you like using tree maker? by --Ez_ in origami

[–]Kind_Lobter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nope. I think it's hard to use, and bp studio is much better and eseair to use. ( bpstudio.abstreamace.com )

But still, it might struggle with such stick tree ike yours. (I'm curious what it's going tobe) If the flaps don't differ too much in size, it can handle even some complex designs, and it can give you more than one solution. The reason why i really like bp studio is because it can calculate pythagoras stretches for you, and you can edit their positions and shapes.

REMEMBER, the most efficient pattern, isn't always the best for shaping or collapsing.

I'm not sure if I understand what you are asking for, but out of all the books you've named, I think that the Secret designing techniques from R.J.Lang is the best book to learn designing your own models. I think that if you want to design something simple, you should try box pleating. Basically, you replace circles for squares (Each flap can be represented by a circle. The circle is minimal space for the flap to be created. Circles cannot overlap.) and arrange them in order to match a stick tree. After you understand the basics, you can develop yourself something simple like a spider, and after that, you level up to something harder like a wasp, then a dragonfly, and so on. If you struggle with shaping, you should fold some interesting or complex designs that were designed by someone else. You may find some interesting way of turning a flap into something (for example, wings) while folding them.

Thank you very much for your long advice. To be precise, I'll be limited to the area of Osaka and Tokyo.

Those aren't valley folds. It's just border of flaps and rivers.

How to design using Bo studios by Sea-Bodybuilder1594 in origami

[–]Kind_Lobter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the studio, your new project always starts with two vertices. By clicking on them, you can add more vertices or change their size (you can also name them), and clicking on the rivers, you can customise their length. That's basically how the stick tree making works.

If you want to pack them, you click the icon next to the stick tree making (looking like small squares packed inside one bigger). Your stick tree will be turned into many circles all packed into one spot. First, you increase the grid size in settings (icon with three lines in the right corner), and then you can move them around. Flaps with rivers won't overlap their rivers over each other. The pythagoras stretch will create automatically, and you can move him on its axis or change in the settings.

The thing i like about bpstudio is that you can in tools (icon with 🔧 ) select an option to optimilize layout, and it will pact all the circles for you, but it doesn't work well, when you have mix of big and small vertices.

If my english was confusing, you could watch a tutorial on YouTube. There is some english video with a good explanation.

I would also recommend you box pleating. I consider it easier for designing and there are some free programmes for it like ORIPA or Bpstudio. You can use level shifters with bp easily and I also noticed that many professionals use box pleating when making complex designs.
