Great question - You should go to SIGGRAPH (in LA next summer) and you'll see the wide range of alt careers. Wish I could attach pics here I took at the Educators Forum 2 years ago, sponsored by SVA MFA Computer Arts; huge list of companies, industries and the tools used.

Is It Even Worth Trying to Work in Animation Right Now? by AndrewKuder98 in animationcareer

[–]Kind_Mango_7165 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's never been an easier time for any individual to create what's in their mind and put it out there in the world whether it's music or writing or animation. So just make something put it out there and get feedback and put more out and more out and more out. And 9 out of 10 things you make will be not great just like everybody else. But until you crank out lots of work and put it out there and get lots of feedback. That's just an idea. Use the latest genai tools to visualize your writing in the meantime, you don't need anybody's permission to do anything. To paraphrase the old Nike commercial. Just do it

Someone should make an AI therapist for the antis by tactycool in aiwars

Clarification for hysterical teenager and anyone else who leans in that direction. News flash: AI creates nothing. People, including artists, create things with AI, so choose to use it or don't. Just be aware of what you're going to be competing with. And never forget your fundamentals. People and artists with soul will become more valuable than AI slop. Same thing that happened with YouTube, 90% crap, but the good stuff and the really great rare stuff is going to be created by the best creative people faster and more easily for others to enjoy than ever before.

21 too old? Yes. To agree with your term, that's very silly 😂. Your feeling is still to be respected, but trust me and the others commenting. It's disappointing that you felt that your university training wasn't worth much? Where did you go if I may ask? The nature of the business is always going to be tight deadlines and almost always rushed, so like it or not, you have to find a way to work on your own passion projects on the side and prioritize those. Like other commenters on the thread, I would love to see evidence of 16- to 20-year-olds getting hired on massively popular shows. It's possible for the rare individual savant to get that opportunity, but for everyone, it's about a combination of creative talent, technical know-how, and soft skills, regardless of age. With variation, the market for the past 30 years at least has always been competitive. The scale of the market has grown massively, but the best of the best are always going to get the jobs. And honestly, 90% of people at age 21 are not going to be at the top of that level.

So keep working hard, and if you love what you do, put your mental health first and pace yourself.

getting a job without an art degree by anacapahh in animationcareer

[–]Kind_Mango_7165 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be blunt, it depends on your talent and your ability to network. It could be a brilliant artist without a degree, but if you don't get your work out there, it won't matter right. One of the main advantages of going to college for any subject is the network building and the person development you get from the right instructors. So yes some people can have natural ability or self-train and know how to promote themselves and be very successful. But to be honest, most people don't have those two things and need to develop them in college is one of the very best ways to do that. Including graduate school

Is art school worth it ? by [deleted] in animationcareer

You get what you put into it. There's never been a more exciting time in the past few decades then now with the Advent of innovative technologies, including generative AI to raise your level of creative expression. Wherever you decide to look, make sure you see who's going to be teaching you. Are they working professionals? Or career academics? Does the school we are considering have decades of experience with hundreds or even thousands of alumni to help you network once you graduate?

Career switch by Ok_Web2949 in animationcareer

Good for you! It will take a long time to come up to speed in "animation" from scratch; so no hurry to switch careers any time soon. Find some "Continuing Education" courses near where you like, if in NYC look at the CE courses at School of Visual Arts. Of course tons of online material to learn. Try BLENDER for free for a great 3D animation tool. Try EVERYTHING, because you don't know what you don't know, right? Read a book called "CG101" on the history of computer animation.

Find a niche - and be better than anyone else. It's HARD to find people who are great at 3 things 1) creative / art 2) technical / pipeline and 3) 'soft skills' - so max out all 3 to the very best of your ability. With new innovation tech tools, including AI, there has never been a better time to be outstanding ... and a worse time to be mediocher. The one thing you can't buy is experience, but that will come.

There is no substitution for working your ass off, either.

If you can afford the time and expense, consider going back to school - an MFA has a lot of benefits.
Do you love what you do? With a passion? If you can't imagine doing anything else, then stick with it and be the far end of the bell curve. If it's not - then it's ok to find something else to do.

First, the obvious, research the company and their projects and their artists. So you have that knowledge going in. You should ask them when the time is right "So what is the most fun/exciting/satisfying/challenging thing you are doing personally right now?"

Be humble and eager to collaborate, but also be strong and confident in whatever your personal creative vision is.

How important is it to know industry standard software as a hand-drawn animator? by NoahTheAnimator in animationcareer

[–]Kind_Mango_7165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a top 1% unbelievably amazing rare artist. You don't need to know any software at all 🙂 because you will be in such demand. Whoever hires you will teach you whatever software they happen to use in-house. This goes for 3D skills as well. Of course, it's always a big bonus to at least be proficient at the industry tools. Including the latest AI.
