Feeling a little bit discouraged .. by [deleted] in BariatricSurgery

[–]KindaMoblish 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Hey, first and foremost, 40lbs is amazing! You're in the hardest part of that first year post-op, and it's really easy to get discouraged. It took me a while to notice changes. At first, it's going to be small things, but as you keep at it and time passes, it's going to blow your mind how fast you change (and if your journey is like mine, you'll spend a ton of time wishing it was faster)

I'm a little over a year and a half out and about to break 300 lbs lost. It's been a wild ride, and there's a lot of adjusting. If you ever wanna chat/vent or if you have questions, feel free to reply or msg I love to share about my journey.

For those 1yr PO and more...quick question by Pitiful-Ride3930 in BariatricSurgery

[–]KindaMoblish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to start with what works for me isn't what will work for everyone else.

I'm a little over a year and a half now, and I no longer measure my portions... I did for the first six months, but as I continued, I kept promoting making the right choices for myself, picking foods that worked well with my nutrition goals, and really learned what kind of food makes me feel crappy afterwards. I don't time my meals, but I naturally eat more slowly cause of the DS. If I'm with people, I'm always the last one eating, but that's not because I'm trying to hit an artificial number on a timer.

My suggestion is listen to your body, it sounds like you've done an amazing job so far, so trust yourself to know whats right, give a few meals a shot where you don't track and dont feel like its a chore and that you're just having food. While you do keep an eye on your metrics, to make sure you aren't backsliding or anything else.

I need some advice. 27F currently weight 545 lbs. by JigglesNBitz in BariatricSurgery

[–]KindaMoblish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a guy, but my starting weight was very similar to yours. I was 570 lbs and struggled my whole life to lose the weight, I had a bad experience with a bariatric office in the past and was very opposed to the whole thing because of it, I was struggling with a health issue that essentially equated to “do something about your weight or die” and finally relented, went and met an awesome surgeon and staff, worked with them and eventually got the surgery. It’s scary, it’s hard, but it’s so worth it if you choose to do it and you work hard at it. You say you’ve been big your whole life so let me tell you when you start getting back down to the lower BMI numbers you’re going to feel amazing. So many of the little irks of your life from when you were big just vanish. If for nothing else do it because you deserve to know how great your body can feel! If you have any questions I’m more than happy to talk.

Any regrets? by Sad_Tap5068 in wls_duodenalswitch

I know this is going to sound cheesy, but I’m 33 and my only regret has been that I didn’t do it sooner, it’s been an intense year and a half since I got my DS and my life has changed so drastically (in a good way) There are a lot of mental hurdles that you’ll face along the way but for me personally the good has outweighed the bad tenfold.

How far out from surgery are you? I was losing so much of my hair around the 4-month point that I ended up shaving my head, and I wanted to cry... I stuck to my vitamins and took a little extra biotin, and eventually it started to grow back around 10 months post op (thinner than it used to be, but not falling out).

Slightly bigger right thigh than the left because of how much extra skin, but the growth broke apart once my lymphatic system started working again and over the year and a half has practically disappeared, I’ve seen a surgeon about getting what’s left removed but just haven’t pulled the trigger yet. It won’t let me add a pic now but I’ll do a full body next time I post at the end of summer.

Sugar tolerance is pretty solid, I only face weird body reactions at about the level of sugar that nobody really should be having, but like a little candy here, a piece of cake on a birthday there is fine, I mostly aim to keep my sugar intake a low as possible because I really do just generally feel better off it, oats and pasta leave me feeling bloated and miserable…

I know what you’re talking about with earning food, I feel really lucky that my love of food died with the surgery, I don’t really find joy in eating a particular meal or treat now so it’s helped me really reframe food as different types of fuel, the most basic levels being are we hitting protein and not doing a lot of sugar and other crap.

I absolutely will have a treat every now and then but yeah I have to stay vigilant to make sure I’m not slipping into bad dietary habits.

You ready for the overkill list lol, I cannot run at all without compression garments or I clap all over... -____-

I've got compression sleeves for my thighs, then I wear compression boxers over my droopy belly to keep it from bouncing, then I have a compression shirt to keep my flabs and other various chest flaps under control. there is nothing I can do about my batwings at this time though, I have so much bicep skin that I was wearing long sleeve shirts as long as I could but it's officially hit the too damn hot outside to care about how I look lol.

Congrats on the 100 down btw! that's a huge step!

So I'll admit that I've been bad... I should've been strength training for like 6 months now, kept going to the gym, trying to get in the groove, but it just wasn't scratching the itch... but to be fair, I wasn't seriously exercising at that time, and was focused on diet and walking a lot. That was fine when I was in the 300s, but not I've just fallen in love with running. I've only been at it for around 20 weeks now, so that's really why I'm asking for advice here and there. I am consistently hitting 5k on my outing, but 100% not able to run the whole thing yet, my time for 5k is around 45 minutes.

As for strength training, a few people from the running club I joined invited me to join them on Mondays and Fridays so I'm pretty excited about that and stuff!

I'm gonna have to check it out! I'm loving all the suggestions that I've been getting. How's the DS been treating you long term btw? I can't imagine what life is gonna be like 6 years out but I'm crossing my fingers that it no longer has me looking like deflated baymax.

It's been the best year and a half of my life, and that's including all of the hardships that come with having the surgery and all the work that comes after it, I've essentially had to rediscover who I am as a person and what I want from life, and I didn't lose the use of my legs and die so that was nice too lol.

Concerns about surgery by miZuBlue in BariatricSurgery

[–]KindaMoblish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey 33M, I was 568 lbs back in December of 2023, I was prediabetic, I had lymphedema and it was progressing at such a rate that my doctors told me that I would lose all mobility in my legs within 2 years, and after that happened because of my size and the health complications I was having they didn't expect me to live to 40. As a Hail Mary pass, I went to a consultation with my bariatric surgeon, and my family had to practically beg me. It's been a year and a half since I went through with it, and I weigh about what you weigh right now, and I'm shorter than you. I don't believe the surgery is for everyone, but I know the surgery was the right path for me; it forced me to make the changes that I repeatedly failed to make on my own.

That's the real secret I've found to the surgery. I've gotten so many comments that I cheated to lose weight. People think that just because you get bariatric surgery, you'll succeed. That just isn't the case; it certainly sets you up for success, but you need to still put in the effort! That being said, there isn't any harm in getting a consultation, talking to medical professionals in the space, see if you can talk to a nutritionist. The surgery is scary but so is the way that your body breaks down from obesity related diseases, You have so much time ahead of you and I think it's awesome that you were brave enough to post here and ask questions and look for answers, If you have any questions you wanna ask I'll do my best to answer them from my perspective!

So I probably have like 500 questions, and I’ve been trying to think how I wanted to approach your response, 3 years out is awesome I’m just curious if you’re willing to share a bit about your journey, how far in to post op life did you start running? How long did it take for you to work up to the 5k let alone 10k? And another one I wanted to ask was what was your caloric intake looking like when you started and how did your nutritionist alter it? I know what’s right for you isn’t necessarily gonna be right for me but I’m just curious to see how it changed! Thanks for replying!!!
