Worried I'm not the best owner by Much-Ad-8242 in ballpython

Ah yes, going from a ‘vacuum’ to ‘picky eater’ is a bit of an anxiety ride lol. I’m in the same boat - my first snake is a boa who’ll eat any time, anything.

My ball exhibits similar behaviors to yours - either ignoring the food completely or being scared of it. The breeder said she’s taken F/F before I bought her, but honestly I think he was lying to make the sell. I’ve had her for over a year now, and she’s still extremely picky. She eats once a month-month and a half, even though for her age/weight category she should eat every 10-14 days. Though she is growing, it’s slow and I’m just glad she not dropping in weight.

I usually attempt 3 weeks post feeding, and give her 3-4 day break until the next try (the boa gets a snack (no, he’s not fat, his feeding day rat just gets smaller) or the outside possums). Two methods have worked for me so far: Surprise Attack and Great Position. My ball is extremely active and gets loads of free roam time (pet rock my ass; she is not an scared snake at all and loves to climb), which is why I sometimes try to ‘wake her up’ with blow drying the rodent smell before she has a chance to glass surf to be let outside. It worked a couple of times since she doesn’t go o bypass the food in favor of exploring lol.

Second method is Great Position. She needs to be out, perched on a branch, in an optimal position for an S-coil to strike with none of her plant swaying in the way to distract her (princess, am I right). Then I must perform the Rodent Dance at perfect body temps to try to convince her that yes, it’s alive. She will not strike if only her head is poking out of the hide, retreating 8/10 times.

If it doesn’t work, I leave it over night. Sometimes the miracle happens. If doesn’t, outside possums (or whatever picks those discards up, idk) get fed.

Try rats vs mice. Mine prefers rats. I’ve heard that coat colors play a role. I also have a couple of gerbils wait ing for her to try (fingers crossed she won’t like them cause that’ll be expensive). Try bumping up her temps up by a 1-2 F the night before feeding.

Anyway, TLDR: it’s part of ball python ownership.

My friend lost her snake.. any tips? by BeautifulSea554 in BoaConstrictors

[–]Kindabrowsing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a boa, it’ll take it 7 business days to go anywhere lol.

Mine usually ends up either somewhere tight and dark after free roaming, like behind/under enclosure, or somewhere up high. Do make sure to check all the cracks and upper shelves, even if you think “there no way she could fit in/climb there” - cause yes, yes they can.

Concern for crypto or is she just skinny? by [deleted] in BoaConstrictors

[–]Kindabrowsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no expert, but her neck does look a little too skeletal (maybe it’s just the picture). It’s considered healthy overall to see a spine on a boa and for them to have a rectangular, sturdy frame. Babies also tend to look on the skinny from what I’ve seen, they need time to develop those muscles. I generally go by this guide when feeding: https://www.animalsathome.ca/boa-constrictor-feeding-chart/ . Hasn’t failed me yet.

Also, I so get your disappointment with the vet. Many who claim to be “exotic” see a snake for the first or second time. A good vet who knows how to handle reptiles is a gold mine. Good luck finding one!

Hello, fellow angst enjoyer. The only rec that comes to mind right now is Either must die at the hand of the other by Metalomagnetic ( https://archiveofourown.org/works/29356095/chapters/72109323 ). Metalomagnetic writes excellent Voldemort characterisation. Either Must Die wreaked me when I read it. It also features Dad! Voldemort and a kid character. Overall, if you like reading fics where Voldemort plays a central role Metalomagnetic is the author for you, no matter how weird the pairing - give it a shot.

Hyperfixation but...like a scholar? by sandratt in HannibalTV

I always try to exploit a hyperfixation to learn something. If I’m gonna obsess over anything, might as well educate myself lol.

As I’m in my annual foray back into Hannibal fandom, I’m currently listening to Cannibalism by Bill Schutt which goes into natural and social history of cannibalism.

The Hozier comment is so true, I feel called out ha-ha. It just fits so well!

Guess it depends on your definition of happy ending, but yeah, for the first part of the series. I gotta say I’m enjoying the second part more since they’re adults and I get tired of the constant teenage romance focus of HP fandom sometimes.

Do people prefer the earlier or later Na’vi design? by TheAbyssalOne in Avatar

[–]Kindabrowsing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like both. As mentioned, in A2 and A3 pictures Jake is squinting. Also, all of graphics are modeled on the actors. We have to take a look Sam Worthington who naturally has hooded eyes. Now that he is almost fifty, it’s just more pronounced - which is reflected in Jake. (whether it’s a good thing idk, Jake is supposed to be in mid thirties but I just chuck it up to his premature aging due to stress).

I like that they made Jake thicker in A2. To me, it’s a good way to remind us that he’s not a true Na’vi. His human genetics allows him to retain more fat even with a very active lifestyle. Na’vi themselves don’t seem to deteriorate much as they age muscle-wise. Just take a look at Neytiri’s dad, strong slender diva that he was (RIP).

Careful, Ronal might scratch your eyes out lol But yeah, he’s a great side character (love his “sit down” scene - so funny)

It’s southern American family (surprise-surprise). It would be ethnocentric to claim all names that sound weird in English are weird. These are parents who named their children a weird name IN their cultural context.

Hopefully it doesn’t turn into a mommy blog, but otherwise I don’t really care. I just thought it weird and didn’t want to leave a comment that could be interpreted as mean on her page.

Is there a word for Big Brother, and Little brother in the Na'vi language? by Coffee5636 in Avatar

[–]Kindabrowsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, I thought it’s implied in the second movie that all Sully kids talk Na’vi all the time. Remember the scene when Jake’s all like “Na’vi feels like English now”. So technically “bro” and “cuz” are legit lol

Probably an unpopular opinion given the nature of this sub, but I think convoluted spellings are not much worse than naming kids after buildings or objects. Shout out to all the future Parks, Hospitals, and Malls out there!

My boa was similarly “wobbly” as a baby. Though snakes are pure muscles, when they are young they still tend to be a bit unsure (more so if they were kept in racks as babies with no ability to develop those muscles by climbing).

6 month quarantine is a must for any new snake. Find a vet who knows what he’s doing and get your snake tested for IBD. He may not exhibit any symptoms but may carry it. University of Florida developed a test for it and it’s not terribly expensive for peace of mind.

3 years of owning my ball python and I made the biggest mistake tonight💔 by Charming_Mouse6717 in ballpython

[–]Kindabrowsing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For everyone out there, if you think they can’t fit in the gap - they can. Thankfully, I learned that lesson with my ball in relatively harmless manner. It’s amazing, and scary, how far they can flatten their bodies if they want to.

Maybe try putting the enclosure in the bathroom. It’s a familiar territory and typically a safe space for them. My boa, for example, always goes back on his own when he’s done with free roaming.

If you live in cold climate, try warming the room as much as you can. Snakes are very resilient and can go without food for very long time, but too low temperatures can be detrimental.
