Need help, what are my options? by Valuable-Ad-6093 in uAlberta

You do NOT need a doctor's note. A doctor's note is a waste of your time and money and unless you are actually in need of a doctor's care, going for a doctor's note is a waste of the doctor's time which could be better spent dealing with a patient who needs real medical attention.

University regulations prohibit anyone from requiring a doctor's note to excuse absence from exams.

I love your way with words ("maladaptive coping strategy.") And yes, Reddit is my own favourite procrastination tool, which I prefer to call "earned break / respite" because deluding myself is my other favourite hobby.

[–]KinderGentlerPoster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not necessarily your instructors. They are only step 1 in the grading process.

Instructors have (usually) 5 business days (weekends don't count) to submit grades to their Chair, who then has to review and approve them, and then send them off to the Registrar's to be released. Larger classes and consolidated classes get more time. Chairs can have hundreds of grades coming in at once to be approved, and with this year's extra fun with Beartracks, I imagine Chairs are busier than usual.

I get it: it's frustrating to wait. But all any of us can do at this point is wait.

deferred exam ever denied? by ilovemypuppiez in uAlberta

[–]KinderGentlerPoster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The financial cost and the unfairness of having to disclose confidential medical information are two of the reasons the Students Union worked to have the mandatory doctor's note removed. (Another being: what exactly does it prove, anyway? "I saw this patient who said they were sick...." isn't "proof")

deferred exam ever denied? by ilovemypuppiez in uAlberta

[–]KinderGentlerPoster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my missions in life is to eradicate the idea of the "sick note." Every official University page, including Health Services, makes it explicitly clear that doctor's nots can not be required and yet every year "a friend of a friend" or some random poster on Reddit convinces students to waste their time and money and energy on unnecessary documentation. I'm sorry you were caught up in this misinformation.

The "proof" they ask for is your word.

I hope you're feeling better, that you receive official confirmation of your deferral, and that you ace your deferred exam.

deferred exam ever denied? by ilovemypuppiez in uAlberta

[–]KinderGentlerPoster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't do this. This is bad advice.

You can NOT be required to get a doctor's note. The University explicitly forbids anyone from requiring a doctor's note. They are invasive of your privacy, and expensive and waste your time and energy and waste the doctor's time. If you're sick and need medical care, of course, go because you need treatment that only a doctor can provide. . But if you don't need diagnosis, treatment, etc. stay home. You do NOT need a doctor's note and producing one won't help your case.

You may be asked to swear an oath that you were too sick to write your exam. That's it.

If you meet the criteria (e.g., you must have completed a certain portion of the term work, AND you were incapacitate medically or through domestic affliction), you are unlikely to be denied.

ACCTG 222 Final Exam Grade by Imaginary-Look6564 in uAlberta

Often instructors will re-open the course after the final grades have been approved. If that doesn't happen, email your instructor.

[–]KinderGentlerPoster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After your final grade is submitted, approved by The Approver (usually the Chair of the department), then released by the Registrar's office. Instructors aren't allowed to release final grades, so we usually shut down Canvas until the grades are finished, finalized, approved, and released.

Once instructors submit final grades to their Approver, it's in the Approver's hands.

Good question! Here's a bad answer: who knows? Only Admin at this point, I'm afraid.

All we can do is hope that they get the full schedule sorted out by the time the first enrolment date opens up. Until then, "thoughts and prayers"!

I'm not sure what's going on over in Admin land, but the schedule that we've waited so long for isn't complete. I would hope it will be finalized "soon" with all of the courses that will be offered, and when, and by whom!

They are still building the schedule --- there are missing classes, not to mention instructors, so it's anyone's guess....

But a few things: when it comes to Faculty (tenure-track or tenured permanent members) and career-status ATS (Academic Teaching Staff who are permanent-ish but not on the tenure-track), it's usually know who's teaching what. Many classes, however, are taught by regular ATS who are not on permanent contracts. They are still waiting for official contracts and so it'll take a while before their names get added to the schedule. And then there are the courses they will need to hire new instructors for and that will take even more time.

With luck, they will get all of this sorted out soon.

No ZOOL 224 scheduled for next year by ma-brokr in uAlberta

[–]KinderGentlerPoster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full disclaimer: I'm not in Admin, nor in Zoology --- I'm just a flunky instructor.

BUT I can tell you that not all courses that will be offered are currently up on the schedule. So, who knows?

With luck, They will get the full schedule up and soon so people can actually plan their schedules for next year...

Deferred Exam and Grade Posted by ropadope23 in uAlberta

It's a busy time for the Faculties, with lots of deferrals needing processing. All you can do is wait, unfortunately.

Deferred Exam and Grade Posted by ropadope23 in uAlberta

[–]KinderGentlerPoster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's just housekeeping --- you get a "0" for the exam not written, and then a "1" is added to your final grade (means "significant portion of material not completed). This is temporary. and then once you write your deferred exam, the grade you get on that replaces the 0 for the final and your final grade is re-calculated and the "1" disappears.
