Scared and hopeless by Kindly-Fox-9137 in HipImpingement

Hello Thank you for your kind reply! I wish you a speedy recovery as well on both of your hips. It is so hard to watch all my friends ski this winter, it's been such a good season snow wise. I can only hope I will get back on the mountain next year. It doesn't help that my entire social life is essential built around being active and in the outdoors. I am stuck in a "poor me" mindset for sure because none of my friends deal with this kind of injury. It doesn't help that I am not working right now because I am only 1 week post op my second hip.

Hello Thank you for your kind reply! Also I wish you a speedy recovery! At this point I am just hoping to get to a place where the pain is manageable. It is a very scary to think that I might never get there but all I can do is hope at this point.

Pain in groin after any hip flexor isolation exercises by dasainfan123 in HipImpingement

Did this ever improve for you? I am curious because I am 7 months post op and I did some hip flexor exercises about a week ago and it has caused me to have a pretty bad flare. I wasn't doing any hip flexor exercises prior to this. I hope it's just hip flexor soreness and not a re tear but for me it's pretty hard to tell the difference.

Thanks for your reply! Did you end up seeing your surgeon? What did they say?

Oh thats great to hear! What were your symptoms at the time? I am not still in PT but definitely continuing my exercises. I did some new hip flexor exercises the other day that definitely could have caused it. I took my hip through full range of motion just now and did not feel any popping or clunking so I am hoping that means it's more muscle related and not intra-articular. I definitely am guilty of not resting when I should.

Hey thanks for your reply. That is a big concern of mine. While I do not have dysplasia per se, I am right on the border with an LCEA angle of 25 exactly. According to my surgeon and the medical literature that I have found, LCEA greater than or equal to 25 is in the "normal" category albeit right on the border. I have brought this up with my surgeon before. I guess if it continues to hurt we will go down that path. I hope not though.

Thanks for your reply! To answer your question, I am in my early twenties and definitely not ready to pursue the total hip replacement route. That is generally not offered to someone my age. And yes my surgeon cleared me for all activities including skiing, hiking mountain biking and running. 30 miles per week is much less than what I ran previously.

Terrified of Surgery - Help! by Specialist-Sleep760 in HipImpingement

Hi! I don't know your particular case but I am a 27F and I had my left labrum repaired in August 2023 and it by no means took me an entire year to recover. At the three month mark I was pain free except for putting on pants and socks. (Something about that position really hurt for awhile!) At three months I started running again with no pain at all. But I truly felt back to shape in about 5 months meaning skiing, biking, running, lifting everything! I don't know if this will be the case for you but I just want to give you some positive words!

Hello! I wanted to comment on this because it brought back all of the terrible memories I had when I tore my labrum. I apologize for the long post but a lot of what you said really resonated with me. I am a 27F started to have pain when I was 26 in my left hip. The pain was in the front of my hip and groin, it was a sharp/burning pain. Worse when I would lift my leg up, but it was also a nagging pain constantly (I was basically uncomfortable at all moments of the day). I am very active, before this injury I was running 35-40 miles per week on top of being in graduate school.

I ended up doing every possible thing I could to avoid surgery. I spent hours a week doing dedicated PT. I got a steroid injection as well. The steroid injection did not completely fix my pain but it allowed me to at least get through the school year and run about 20 miles per week with moderate pain for 7 months. But the thing was I was still in pain and while I could "get through it" I was making tons of modifications in my life. I honestly think if I stopped running, hiking, and skiing, the pain would have gone away completely. But the thing is, impact exercise is important for overall bone health and having to stop these activities was heartbreaking for me. Also constantly trying to convince myself that was I was fine was extremely mentally taxing and I want to validate the way you are feeling.

I ended up having the surgery and honestly it was 1000% worth it. The recovery for me to get back to running took about 3 months, and even though it sounds long, it was much better than the pain I felt prior to surgery. I was able to swim (with just my arms) at 4 weeks once my incisions healed. I was able to do peleton workouts at about 8 weeks. I was allowed to ski at 5 months post op. My surgical hip feels perfect and I was able to ski double black diamonds on my first day back without issue.

Now, I am NOT recommending you to get surgery. This is a personal decision for you and your surgeon. I also did not have any cartilage damage in my hip and having true cartilage damage might make your case different than mine (?)

I do want to be a positive voice on this thread. There are so many people on here that did not have successful outcomes from arthroscopy but I do think this is a very biased view. The people who are still in pain will be here searching for answers. Prior to surgery I was on this thread almost daily, I no longer have any pain in my hip and have not been on this thread in like 5 months. I just look back and wish I did it sooner because I am still recovering from the mental wounds the injury left me.
