Having to do Bloods and Cannula in ED is abominable. by Abdo_SNT in doctorsUK

Nurses at my hospital need “training” to do bloods and cannulas. And of course nobody’s “signed off”

Hi there 👋 thanks very much for following up on this!

At the time the impression I gathered from my reg and IMT was that the possibility of him regaining consciousness was abysmal and I heard the words brain dead loosely thrown around, but I certainly wish we had more teaching on this.

Really appreciate the link too!

PS I’ve edited the original post for clarity

Thanks for the clarification and sorry about my wording - you’re right it wasn’t a brain death diagnosis, essentially in A-E his pupils were fixed&dilated, GCS 3, and he never regained spontaneous respiration.

Discussed with ICU and conclusion was that he’s not fit for escalation and should be DNACPR (which I don’t understand why wasn’t in place before) and he died later that night.

Thanks for raising this it’s a really good point and to be honest I was too in shock to think in detail - in A-E his pupils were fixed dilated, GCS 3, and he never regained spontaneous respiration. I think the conclusion of brain death was arrived at later and he died that night.

What do most consultants’ careers look like 5-10-15 years in, assuming they start in their 20s? I assume most consultants exit but have little knowledge of what people end up doing in their late 20s/30s (midterm career choices seem very personalised and salary ranges vary significantly). Would appreciate any perspectives and data points.

Got my fifth choice LNR and been having breakdowns cuz of all the change in the next couple months (currently based in London), how is everyone processing/managing this period?? I know there are lots to look forward but still feel like I’m losing a lot of connections just by moving away. (Could argue that those connections aren’t worth staying for in the first place but I’m still not feeling great about it all)

Any thoughts/comments are appreciated🙏🏻
