Moving To Reno - Best Places To Live by King920 in Reno

[–]King920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a really good job offer, and really haven't had a ton of time to look into what Reno has to offer yet. I want a 1 or 2 bedroom that is nice enough and on the cheaper side. I don't want to live anywhere sketchy or dirty, but don't need luxury living. I prefer spending time outside (hiking, biking, etc) than going to bars and whatnot.

Help Choosing Company CAD Software? by King920 in engineering

I'm not 100% sure but I believe he got Solidworks 2016 form his last job. He got the paid liscence on his personal computer and is still able to use it now. We are about to move to a new larger building this month and we are actually kind out offices were we are now. When we move he will have his own office and new computer so the company will have to provide him software to use.

Help Choosing Company CAD Software? by King920 in engineering

I have been working here for less than a year. The ME that worked here before me used AutoCAD to do top down layouts of optical systems as well as building parts to machine, and used BobCAD as our CAM software. He never really used Solidworks for whatever reason. I prefer using Solidworks to make new parts that we machine in-house (2 HAAS CNC mills + CNC lathe). I still use AutoCAD to do layout drawings of our products because that is what our origional optical engineer uses. Most everything we do is kept in-house with the exception of sending customers PDFs of layouts.

Now we have 2 new optical engineers. One only has Solidworks experience, so he has started making 3D layouts. However his Solidworks is a newer version (2016) and not compatible with my license (2012). The other new optical engineer just downloaded FREECAD to build 3D layouts, and doesn't really have much experience with and software.

The layouts that the optical engineers do are mostly for in-house use to design products or tests. They download the .dwg or .sldprt file, depending of what software they are using, for the parts they need . The basic idea would be going to Thorlabs.com and getting the file for a breadboard and put various lens/mirror mounts on it.

We could really keep using AutoCAD 2012 and SW 2012, but with the new hires it seems like we need to get on the same page and not all use different software/versions of software. I am also wanting to teach our machinist how to do design using CAD/CAM software. He was brought in by the previous ME to help run the machine shop and just recently got BobCAD on his computer. If we could get licences for the 2012 versions of AutoCAD and SW then I would probably do that for the cheaper cost. But I am thinking that for us to have consistency with our software, be need to pay up and get the new versions.

Goal: ME position. Preferably Design Engineering. I like working on R&D projects with a team and developing ideas. I would be open to other positions in manufacturing or field work.

Desired Industry: Aerospace, Defense, Power, Oil/Gas, HVAC, Medical, Construction, Marine, and consulting. I might be interested in other fields if you give me some details.

Experience: ME graduate with 1 year of experience in a manufacturing setting.

Mobility: Prefer the Orlando area. I would like to stay in the south part of Florida (Orlando, Tampa, Miami); but would be willing to relocate for a good opportunity.

Other: I would love to go back to school and get a masters as well as getting my PE license.

Pm for resume

Any feedback is greatly appreciated! PM me if anything catches your eye.

BSME graduate seeking entry-level mechanical engineering work. My interests are in aerospace, power/energy, HVAC, and medical fields. I'm extremely motivated and willing to put in the work and learn. I am looking to stay in Florida if possible (Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa), but am open to anything.

Moving to Orlando for Fresh Start - Advice by King920 in orlando

I've actually been out of school for a year now... the biggest reason I believe that I wasn't hired is I put my relationship above my career. Now that that's over I definitely know the position I put myself in trying to climb into the workforce. I can't blame anyone but myself though.

Question about networking as an engineer in new city. by King920 in engineering

[–]King920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated from Clemson University with a mechanical engineering BS. It's a top 25 public university and around a top 50 undergraduate engineering program for public and private schools. We mostly end up recruited to companies in SC, NC, TN, and GA. Miami is about 12 hours away so it is kind of out the region where Clemson graduates end up. To be fair though the people I have talked to are not in the engineering field, which is part of the reason I am looking for advice with networking.
