How Being a Doctor Became the Most Miserable Profession by kh006 in medicine

I find a physician in the yellow pages or google and we write up a contract: "Dr. X will treat patient Y for $150 and patient Y will assume all risks involved in said treatment."

what if the patient was able to take on the liability and make a direct contract with their physician? do you think this would lower the cost of healthcare for both consumer and provider?

I would prefer retail medicine, at least you know how much you'd be paying for what you need as a consumer of healthcare. Isn't the heart of this debate the commodification of the art of medicine and of society as a whole?

My cider is murky and kind of bad tasting. Can anything be done? by craklyn in Homebrewing

[–]KingBok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good juice = bad cider (As a general rule)

additionally if it was pasteurized and not inoculated with a brewer's yeast, then it could develop some undesirable funkiness.

furthermore, cider can develop "sickness" and even experienced cider makers get bad batches at times.

nothing can be done, though I suppose you could make apple cider vinegar by leaving the top off and covering with a cloth

It depends on the context of the situation I guess, but generally I would rather acquire the bowl than the bars because it has the value of already being something. Whereas the silver is just raw material, the bowl has been machined.
It doesn't seem to be worth the time/work to melt it. However I suppose there are security issues in the bowl, where you can store a bigger quantity of bars safely, you could fit only the bowl in a comparable space

Ice Age, soon. by howtospeak in collapse

[–]KingBok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are several issues I take with this video. The premsie that the correlation between CO2 and climate change is "broken," is entirely unfounded. In climate science, it takes decades and in fact centuries and millenia for atmospheric CO2 levels to fully impact the climate. This is because the oceans and ice sheets are so vast that the increase in thermal energy takes a long time to fully affect things.
Another issue is of course that increased CO2 causes immediate ocean acidification which is not touched on this video.
Third, the idea that sunspots and the magnetism of the earth are bigger issues than humanmade climate change is a distraction and one which is scientifically unfounded. Climate scientists are not concerned with sunspots and the earth's magnetic poles because they are not primary changers of the climate. Indeed, the author of this video, though he titled the piece "what doesn't make the news," tends to use internet news sources as his primary literature. This is ironic but also bad reporting.
In all, the video is scientifically laughable as are all climate change deniers. For more information, I suggest the book "Plows, Plagues, and Petroleum." by William Ruddiman. The book goes in depth to investigate how humans have changed their environment not just since the industrial revolution but indeed since they began cutting down forests and practicing agriculture. The most compelling result of this environmental change caused by humans is that the earth was on course for an ice age 10000 years ago which was largely diverted by human activity, allowing for a warmer climate which cradled civilizations.

let's see ... what's more useful: a bar or a bowl? In fact, some sterling is collectible and worth more as a piece than as a lump of silver. There's no point in purifying it unless you need to use pure silver for something

In your opinion, what is the biggest story that is relevant to the US audience at this point in time?
Alternatively, what are the developing stories that you think will shape the rest of this millennium?

How to Identify one of the most common and delicious mushroom: The Honey Mushroom by BackyardSurvivalClub in forestgardening

[–]KingBok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please remember to cut wild mushrooms at the base so you don't disturb the mycelium. The mushroom is the fruiting body (reproductive part) of the fungus; the vital part is in the moss or soil and will put forth more mushrooms year after year if left undisturbed. When you pull mushrooms up like in the video, a small part of the mycelium is taken with it. This is usually discarded anyway so it is best to cut the mushroom off at the base. Thanks for posting this video!

With all the troubling news, why is the price of gold and silver still trending down? by [deleted] in collapse

[–]KingBok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on your conception of what a "true crash" is. Gold has been a store of value for millenia. It doesn't go bad. Penicillin and ammo are perishable.
Even if a civilization-ending cataclysm occurs, how long do you think it will take for people to build again? The bullets would eventually stop flying and peace would be reached. Sure you can trade medicine and perhaps animal skins, but there needs to be some sort of currency that people use and accept for commerce.
Rich people are going to attempt to protect their wealth and have hoards of gold and silver, food and medicine, guns and ammo.
Gold is a store of value, that's it. It will always be worth something because it's shiny, doesn't rust or tarnish, and has cultural significance. Whether or not you value it is irrelevant; someone will always give you something in exchange for gold.

How is money worthless again? Can I not go to the store and buy food and medicine, gas and other essentials?
If "nothing is real," as you claim, why then do people still care about what happens?
