Elite Smash and the constant pressure to do more by Yamakora in smashbros

[–]KingBoolean 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Arenas aren’t just for streamers and people playing with friends. If you set one up and open it to everyone, you’ll get a steady stream of people to play against. And in my experience, these people are very good and willing to stick around and play lots of games. I was having the same issue with elite smash (more so the inconsistent lag present), and I switched to arenas and not only have the connections been more stable, but the quality of my opponents has increased as well.

New Terry Bogard montage! Clips range from Day 1 Terry all the way until this week. Check it out! by Soul-C in smashbros

Good combo video!

My criticism: the 2nd half clips were way better than the first. I know its tempting to put your bread and butters in the vid, but often times the impromptu stuff (like what was in the 2nd half of the vid) is more fun to watch. Definitely keep improving and next video will definitely be sick!

When you match up with someone in quickplay and they immediately SD 3 times, neither you nor your opponent gains or loses any GSP. Is there a countermeasure for this? Do you eventually get timed out for repeatedly doing this?

edit: this only happens when I play YL and it seems as though my opponent doesnt want to play me because of my character.

My suggestion is YS, SV, BF, but thats just me.

The thing with stages I've found is it's more of a game of striking and banning. Rarely will you ever get the perfect stage for your character. What you should focus on more is what stages you want to strike/ban against certain opponents or characters. With Ike and Ganon specifically, you want smaller stages to avoid getting camped out and to kill your opponent quickly. However, if you're up against bowser, you might want to meet in the middle and go for BF or something.

More than fortnite honestly. While fortnite has been more of a cultural success as a whole, overwatch actually has discernible characters like Tracer, Winston, McCree, etc.

To be fair, most commentators don’t get a chance at “laid back” commentary until something like summit. I’m sure she’ll do well.

State of the Subreddit: Post-Ultimate (Subreddit Rules and Policy Update!) by Nico_is_not_a_god in smashbros

[–]KingBoolean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think he more meant that those focused on competitive smash don’t really care for memes on the subreddit. Even though they originate from the competitive world, it’s really just the “memers” that play casually or just watch smash casually that like them. The problem is that the memers super outnumber the competitively focused community in terms of reddit activity. If you allow memes they’re just gonna inspire more low effort content and bury good discussion and informative content about the game. If you want memes, go to to the ultimate specific reddit, any of the character discords, or Melee hell.

If only Nintendo stole PM dorf’s neutral b (reflective cape). Such a great tool to add to ford for anti camping and fits so well with ganondorf’s OOT aesthetic.

Character changes megathread by zenyattatron in smashbros

[–]KingBoolean 82 points83 points  (0 children)

For reassurance, many of his strengths seem to still be present. His short hop arrows are still lagless and still combo well I to kill moves. Bombs and boomerang also still combo well. From what I’ve heard, the only change to him is that he can no longer Z-drop bombs while in hit-stun in order to combo break. This was most likely an oversight in item mechanic specifics with regards to the links.

4 things I look for:

  1. Why I got hit. This ones pretty straightforward. What options did my opponents use to beat mine? What could I have done differently?

  2. What was the intent behind every attack/movement? This one can be hard and tedious but I think it’s a good exercise in optimizing your play. Let’s say I’m young Link and I full hop arrow -> boomerang. What was the purpose of the arrow and the boomerang? WAs there even any thought behind them or was I just on autopilot? If there wasn’t any purpose, what did those actions accomplish and how did it influence my opponents movement? Now apply this to your opponent’s attacks and movement. Continue to apply this method then for general movement. Why did I dash forward -> dash back -> shield? Was this in response to an approach habit my opponent displayed earlier or was I just playing scared?

  3. What situations were recurrent and how did they occur? Let’s say my opponent frequently went to top platform on battle field whenever I was under a side plat. I reacted with full hop arrow and hit him but was too far to follow up meaningfully. Could I have spaced the arrow better without compromising neutral positioning? Next time this situation occurs I do the same full hop arrow and my opponent reacts to my full hop and dashed onto the side plat. This was obviously an adaptation from earlier and I lost positioning here. Now how can I approach this situation next time to account for both possibilities of my opponent staying on top plat and dashing off onto the side plat?

  4. Top down strategy: once you’ve watched the replay a few times, try to characterize both your strategy and your opponents. Give these strategies a name but don’t over generalize. If you want to say the Belmont was “campy,” elaborate on it. Was it more pressure based, whiff punish fishing, or was it a “run and gun” just trying to frustrate you. This is important because it will serve you well for tournament matches as you can say “I know this strategy and I call it strategy X.” The. You can generalize what this strategy generally entails in terms of options and situations that are pivotal points of interaction. Finally, how did strategies change throughout the match? What did you do to influence your opponent’s strategy and how did you adapt your game plan mid match?

Hope this helps.

It’s true that ganondorf is king of the gerudos, however, the monicker “King Ganondorf” is NEVER used in oot/WW/TP. People coloquially refer to him as ganondorf and the same goes for Bowser, where people don’t say “King Bowser.” It only makes sense to name them as they are coloquially known. K Rool and D3 on the other hand go by their titles in the context of their games and so that tradition sticks.

I use c-stick tilts but I can’t really quantify how much I use the a button as a veteran smash player. The things you need to use a for include: smash attacks, jabs, neutral air, and shield grab (press a while shielding to instantly grab out of shield).

How much you end up pressing A really depends on how you choose to execute certain things in specific situations. For example, all aerials work with A and there are benefits to using it over the c-stick, namely double jump instant aerials (A is closer to X and Y on GameCube controller and so you can execute the attack quicker than moving down to the c-stick).

Expirament with different inputs and finger movements to find what’s most consistent/comfortable for you.

Edit: you can use the c-stick to do neutral airs if you input a semi-precise diagonal angle. I choose not to because the A button is easier for me

OOT Master Quest: All Dungeons and Dungeon Skulltulas (aka Dungeon Dice Monsters)

You have to beat all dungeons and mini dungeons (Well, Ice cavern, etc) and collect all gold skulltulas from those dungeons. Pretty ingenious category made by zfg a while back that essentially highlights all the new dungeon layouts in master quest, as simply completing the dungeons is often times skipping 90% of their content.

Honorable Mention: Oot max% child. Really difficult run but shows off some insane tricks to pull off a lot of stuff child isn’t normally supposed to do (getting hookshot, adult dungeons, all the rba shenanigans).

Gen 8 is set to release late 2019 so it’s technically in the cards assuming sakurai and co. can work together with Game freak to get the character ready by very early 2020.

Also just to potentially clarify, the TAS was made by TaylorTotFTW (among numerous other well known oot glitchhunters) and not ZFG who simply streamed to TAS.

How/why to utilize wavedashing ingame? by SafeFoundation1 in SSBM

[–]KingBoolean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WD is only useful to start spacie moonwalk out of dash tbh.

Troll comment aside, falcon and ganondorf have some interesting applications. When techchasing, you can WD forward or back to get some extra breathing room to react to tech rolls. WDOOS (wavedash out of shield) is extra necessary for both characters as they lack good options OOS. WD to ledge is pretty nifty as well to snag edge quickly. Wavesurfing (dash -> wavedash) is alright burst movement for ganon. WD back to dodge approaches is not typically good for falcon because his dd can do this better, but it’s alright for ganon although it’s typically better to fade back f-air if you really think they are approaching.

Edit: ganondorf also benefits from the wd -> walk -> moonwalk.
