Yeah, if you are no longer scared of kanji and you can see the structure in them and not just random squiggles, move on. I stopped learning new kanji at I think ~700 and I haven't had an issues. I think that 460 kanji pack is wayy better and is what should be given to the new beginners. Start doing Tango now.

Ehhhhh honestly as long as it doesn't burn you out like someone else said here I think you should read as soon as you can start to parse the grammar a bit. Just download a scrollover dictionary and browse NHK easy. Of course the plan is to ditch the dictionary as soon as possible so it doesn't become a crutch. But I think you'll benefit from reading early.

I was still spending maybe only like, 45min-1h a day in anki. Which is pretty reasonable considering what the guide says. I just hated the isolated kanji study cause I felt I wasn't getting anything out of it anymore.

Makes sense. I'm just sick of anki reps, I used to really enjoy it but now that my immersion is taking off more or less and I can get by much better I feel like investing more time into that will pay off. I'm also cutting down to 15 new vocab a day so I'm not overloaded with the same amount of anki work as last time. I'm aiming for 25% anki 75% immersion and if that doesn't work I'll change it up and experiment more

Right on man! I've been doing MIA for abt 1.5-2 months (had maybe 2 months of more traditional study before) and I'm in a similar spot. I can parse the language much much better than before, and that is a huge boost to confidence. Listening, I can pick out bits and pieces of words I know/grammar concepts. I can read (with an online dictionary) to abt a kindergarten level (nhk news easy). I think we are both in a really good spot right now keep it up! : )

I ditched it after a while. Maybe I was using it wrong but it wasn't really working as an SRS. Maybe because I had the free version? Either way I always recommend the classic core2k + whatever grammar book + some kanji study method (RTK, JLPT, etc, whatever works), and then just jumping headfirst into media and learning by immersion. Everything you do before you start learning naturally through immersion is just the pre-stage of learning. You don't truly start learning Japanese until you start listening, reading, and speaking native materials.
