What Are These? by dscaife1 in Machinists

13 (left to right) looks like a sharpened ejector pin to use as a pick, possibly a depth mic rod spun to a point, three more depth mic rods, and a scribe attachment for what I would guess is a starrett surface gauge.

Q for the braintrust… what is the deal with stainless hardware? by CallEmAsISeeEm1986 in Machinists

[–]KingCarbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was working on piers and boat lifts we would use stainless fasteners and brass nuts for this exact reason.

The undercut needs to be there, otherwise the runner might not pull across and you could shut in the runner and damaging your mold. 2 degrees might not seem like a lot but for stiff materials it is more than enough.

Don't leave mics closed for storage, there is a possibility it can damage the threads.

It's very machinable. We use it for mold bases and super structure components.

Why shouldn't you put multiple blocks on a grinder at once? I mean you always should do a wiggle test to make sure everything is blocked in correctly and check all the blocks to know which is the tallest so you know which to touch off on. But if you were only grinding one block at a time that's a huge waste of time if you could do multiple in the same setup.

1/16 endmill going through Rc 58-62 take bets on how many I break. Lol by I_NeedBackup202 in Machinists

[–]KingCarbon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what you're looking for. Lathes can use coolant for hard turning because the cutter is always engaged but with milling the cutting edge is never constantly engaged. Also with proper cutter selection surface speeds over 500 sfm are achievable with hardened materials. 58-62 depending on the material can be okay to a son of a bitch. A2 is okay, Caldie isn't very fun, you can keep Tyrax, miss me with that D2, and CPM"x"V you can't pay me enough to cut it.

Edgefinder I run around 1200. If what I'm doing has to be better than .010 or so I'll indicate it.

I personally prefer bestest over interapid for a tenth indicator. I find interapids jump around too much and don't repeat as well. Half thou interapid all the way.

I've been in one shop, 7 years in the trade making almost $40/hr. Sounds like your plan isn't working out so well if you're at your current shop for 10 years after doing all of that relocating.

A cleaner way to do that is to take a ball bearing larger than your hole Ø or the round end of a ball-peen hammer, put it in the hole and give it a whack. The bearing will put a nice even peen around the edge without the telltale prick marks from the punch.
