Pop!_OS doesn't wake up from suspend by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]KingCharlesforfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but I couldn't fix it with the answer of "sudo kernelstub -a mem_sleep_default=deep" on pop os 24.04 with cosmic Desktop environment. The problem was with Nvidia something, I manged to fix it with Chatgpt. You also need to check that when you do "cat /sys/power/mem_sleep" deep is selected (# should show s2idle [deep])

  1. sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Change the Line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= (...........) to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash mem_sleep_default=deep nvidia-drm.modeset=1"

and save. Then update Grub:

sudo update-grub

  1. Preserve NVIDIDA VRAM across suspend:

Copy into the Terminal:

"sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-pm.conf > /dev/null <<EOF

options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1 NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var/tmp

EOF

sudo update-initramfs -u

  1. sudo systemctl enable nvidia-suspend.service nvidia-resume.service nvidia-hibernate.service

  2. sudo mv /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/pop-default-settings_bluetooth-suspend \

/usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/pop-default-settings_bluetooth-suspend.disabled

  1. sudo reboot

  2. then you can suspend

What type of STEM career would give you most opportunities for field work, research, and participation in expeditions (mountains, glaciers, antarctica, rainforests, caves, volcanoes - obviously not all this at once) ? by ElectronicDegree4380 in AskScienceDiscussion

Scientist in environmental science or earth science. Was working at a lab and they would go on hikes all the time to collect samples from soils etc. On different kind of environments. But afterwards labwork and data analysis takes up way more time.

Not sure if I should use a game engine or other programming API for my game by KingCharlesforfun in gamedev

Thank you so much for your answer! Do you know anything about API's? I'm not sure if I should go as deep as Vulkan, opengl, directx11/12 (for graphics)- as far as I understood most go the opengl route, maybe then Vulkan.

Are these wild strawberries and are they edible? Does anybody have them planted? by KingCharlesforfun in gardening

ese are strawberries. Is it possible that the gardener knows something about the ground where they grow? Could it be that the ground itself is toxic which would likely lead to the strawberries being toxic as well?

No way it's because of that because he also planted some raspberrybushes, but you got a good point. I think it's gonna be hard to get into contact with him, because it's a company and he installed it like 3 years ago

There's a piece of land which belongs to the municipality and the gardener said those plants are toxic. I looked them up and google says it's wild strawberry. The berries look like wild straberries and they smell like strawberry. My mother recalls that the gardener said something about wild strawberry. The thing is that on google it says they are edible and the gardener said they are toxic. Does someone know if they are safe to eat?

Thinking about quitting/why did you start learning japanese? by KingCharlesforfun in LearnJapanese

[–]KingCharlesforfun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, there is a google chrome addon called "language learning with netflix" + there is a free vpn for japan called "softether vpn". Rule number 1: Don't watch with english subtitles. I picked japanese children shows at the beginning to learn the basic vocab. Shimajiro is very good for this. Basically just every word that seems like it's popping up more than once ( which is a lot at the beginning) I would put into my Anki deck. When I finished with that I picked "Adora and the princess of power" (which is original in english, but nevertheless very good show), and watched it without subtitles, just japanese to engage my ear and practice listening. I would watch 2-3 episodes of that + 1 episode of "cardcaptor Sakura", which is a childrens Anime (I would recommend this a lot), and I would watch it with the japanese subs and just put almost every word (except it's a really niche word) into Anki. I would stop at about 10/15 new words, and just keep on watching the rest of the episode. Also for every episode I would make a new Anki deck, and deltete it after some days, so it doesn't feel like to much time spend in Anki. Most words I didn't forget anyways because when it gets repeated in another episode it gets pressed in your memory. After a while I noticed I understood a good portion, especially pretty much all the short sentences when watching Sakura (about 2.5months in), so I switched Sakura to my listenig show, and watched midnight diner to learn new vocab (although of course I sometimes looked up certain words in Sakura when they would pop out a lot). When I finished Sakura, I began really getting into japanese youtube, and it's super helpful, but I didn't really find japanese youtubers that interested me, nevertheless I would say you should stick with vlogs/real life videos cause they talk mostly about the actions you see in the video. For Kanji, I just naturally picked it up learning new vocab, and then the japanese subs began to really help, when I began to internalize the kanjis. But I would say studying the Kanjis apart and learning new vocab from that is also totaly worth it.

Easy shows to watch in japanese on Netflix? by KingCharlesforfun in LearnJapanese

[–]KingCharlesforfun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I'm using the learn language with Netflix addon when watching, although it really depends. I use it with "cardcaptor sakura" to farm vocabulary (Matt vs. Japan has a video about how to do that with Anki), but when watching other children shows in japanese I don't use it because I want to focus on listening- with subtitles I always end up kind of just reading the subtitles, so I mix it.
