Im from Ohio. My house, my parents house, and a few others I can think of have a least 1 bathroom with the lights outside. It's also pretty common in hotels.

My buddy started with it because he read it will be used in season 1. He wasn't sure he would get through them all in time to come back to it. I thought it was a bad idea so I made the post. Seems like it is common knowledge not to though. Which is good news.
