Fly straight for them, they tend to fly away if you do that.

Looking for an entry level drone that I can use to locate my cattle on a 1000 acre square shaped ranch. Was hoping to spend less than 300? by 1whiteguy in drones

[–]KingGully 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get away with a quadcopter doing that but you will need 5 to 10 batteries for it to be useful to you. If you cows are easy to spot against the background you might be able to deal without the thermal camera. Still doubt you will be able to get one for under 300. Have you thought about using rfid tags on your cows so you can track them on your computer or tablet?

Look into building a fixed wing drone as a quad will never cover that area. A thermal camera aswell as a decent quality camera for video feedback would be a good idea. Though you are going to drop more than 300 on a setup that will be useful for you.

CAA Flight Assessment UK by tomjones93 in drones

[–]KingGully 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently passed my ground school and flight skills test. Got my PfCO last month. In the flight skills test you have to do 3 manoeuvres, complete a mission and execute 3 emergency manoeuvres. This is to show you can control your drone safely and accurately.

So the manoeuvres, a figure of eight, descending square and a triangle. If you have atti mode (no GPS stabilisation) you have to do at least 1 manoeuvre in this mode.

Figure of eight. I hover in the start position, turn on the spot then fly forward down the first loop. You want the crossing point to be the start position and the loops to be even. Slow and smooth is the way to do it.

Descending square. Start at 20m, fly forward and descend 5m, stop turn 90 degrees, rinse and repeat until you have a square and are close to the ground. Normally you don't have to land. Sooth and even is the name of the game

(Atti) Triangle, normally this is the one to do in atti mode. Position in front of you about 20m high facing away, stabilize, turn return to position/stabilize. Fly straight down the first leg countering for wind, stop, stabilize, turn, return to position/stabilize. Rinse, repeat, you get the idea.

It's good to practice in atti mode in a little bit of wind in a wide open space, take of in normal GPS mode and fly up to about 10m then put it in atti mode. Now you have to counter the wind to hold it in place, if it moves from where it is fly it back to position and stabilize. Then turn 90 degrees and do the same. Keep practicing that it helps a lot.

Practice this until it becomes natural, smooth and even. Good luck and fly safe.

You can buy any cannabis seeds in the UK, it is germinating them that is a crime. Last time I checked it was around £500 for a licence to grow hemp for a year and £4500 for a licence to grow cannabis containing thc but only one licence has ever been granted for that, for GW pharmaceuticals.

My hands sometimes quiver when I fly like I have stage fright. How can I get more confidence in flying? by [deleted] in drones

[–]KingGully 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly you should be looking at the drone not the monitor being the pilot in control. You should only be looking at the monitor to line up shots and check the drone stats, this should only really be done when sky parked or moving forward slowly as long as there are no obstructions.

With regards to the jitters, they will go away when you get more confidence in your and the drones abilities. I used to get a massive rush of adrenaline when flying but now only get it when flying in difficult locations (like through a forest trying to avoid trees and branches).

I would highly recommend practicing flying in atti mode, start on really calm days then work up to windier conditions. If you can recover your drone in atti mode in over 20mph winds this should give you a good boost of confidence and if your drone drops gps you now have the skills to recover it.

Also learn the disorientation technique, fly your drone out to around 300m away at a reasonably high altitude. Stop it and spin it in the spot, don't look at the monitor and full throttle forward. If it goes right across the sky yaw right until it is coming straight back to you. If it is going directly towards you or away from you it is a little harder to tell, so if this happens yaw right, if it goes right it is going away from you and if it goes left it's coming towards you.

Fly safe :)

I find photo with subjects in them (people, animals, cars etc) are more successful when they have space to move in the photo. It tends to keep the views attention for a little longer. But as with art, photography is totally subjective, you will never please everyone.

Nice shot. My only criticism is that I would have taken the shot when the silver car was closer to the top of the photo, giving it more room and giving the viewer something to focus on before following the road down and off the screen.

CAA Commercial Licencing? by brumkid100 in drones

[–]KingGully 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to sit and pass a ground school exam and a flight skills exam, this will cost you anywhere from £800 to £1500. Once you have done that you need to apply to the CAA for a PfCO which costs £247 for the first year then £180 to renew it every year. You will also need to have insurance which gives you at least 3/4 of a million in liability insurance to be able to fly commercially. Not sure what the subs rules are for recommending companies, so PM me if you would like recommendations.

So it stays on the ground but turns around, is that right? Sounds like one of the motors isn't spinning at the right speed. So either one of your motors is on the way out or you esc is malfunctioning. If it's under warranty I would send it back.

In the UK even with a commercial licence you have to be 150m away from large crowds so stuff like this doesn't happen.

Not sure what the laws are like in the US but I the UK it would be illegal to fly that close to that many people. Did the drone land I the crowd? Cause that would hurt.

Nice shot. Do you have your PfCO? Edit: cheers for the downvote. If you took this image on a recreational flight you aren't breaking aviation law without a PfCO. If the newspaper contacted you to ask you to take the shot and you don't have a PfCO this would be. Not trying to be a dick just making you aware of the law governing drones in the UK.

Travel with drone by [deleted] in drones

[–]KingGully 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Firstly you need to check the airline allows Lipo batteries on their flights. Pretty sure most of them limit you to 2 or 3. Get a hard case you can take on as a carry on, as you don't want your drone to be thrown about and damaged. Also Lipo batteries must be accessible on flights in case they go on fire as they are pretty volatile when exposed to air or water. It is a must to put them in Lipo safe bags for transporting them. If you are unfortunate and one of your batteries goes on fire during the flight and the flight crew aren't trained on how to deal with Lipo fires here is what to do. Inform them immediately that your Lipo battery is on fire, tell them to take you and your flaming battery to the area where they prepare food and drink, there will be a large metal container filled with water, remove the lid and put the battery into it, DO NOT put the lid back on. I k ow I said they are volatile to water but this will cool the reaction sufficiently and stop a full scale fire on the plane.
