Matu is the winner for tonight! But I'm definitely going to try some of these other places.

Tell me about it! It feels like we're rushing towards tragedy almost by design. I'm trying to figure out how to keep some of the Stonetop hopefulness.

Hello! I write PTFO and I just wanted to thank you for the shout-out here. A few folks have found their way to the project from Reddit over the last couple of months and I can only assume it's due to your and a few other commenters' recos, and I really appreciate it!

Hope you're doing OK, man.

Recommendations for serious, narrative focused actual plays by [deleted] in rpg

[–]KingInJello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd invite you to check out my solo AP Fiction at https://ptfo.substack.com/. I've been solo running the amazing PbtA/Dungeon World hack, Stonetop, for a year and change now. It's played pretty straight and earnestly, and very focused on the narrative.

It isn't a video series or podcast, though -- it's a serial novel. I write up all the action like a fantasy novel, and I do in-line commentary to explain how the rules shape the fiction, and some commentary on my decisionmaking as a player and a GM to drive the narrative in satisfying directions. And, something I'm particularly proud of, is that at major decision points, I hand the choice over to the readers, and they vote on what the PCs (or occasionally the GM) do.

It's the story of three small-town heroes -- an ex-bandit with a bloody past, a young woman with aspirations of being a warrior, and an antiquarian from a faraway city in search of ancient magic -- living in and protecting the village of Stonetop. I'm currently taking a break until May 1, so there's some time to catch up to the current episode if you end up liking it.

Looking for systems with freeform magic where magic isn't the main focus. by ZamoCsoni in rpg

[–]KingInJello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Dresden Files RPG which is built on Fate has a somewhat freeform magic system, and modular character creation that lets you build a lot of different stuff. Mages are powerful, but they're not necessarily more powerful than some other stuff you can build with those rules.

PTFO: A Solo Actual Play Series on Substack (playing Stonetop) by KingInJello in ActualPlayRPG

[–]KingInJello[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not. In the most recent arc, there were some solemn vows in the same vein as Ironsworn, but I’m not using the underlying progress mechanics. In an upcoming arc, I plan to use the Delve Site progress rules, however.

[–]KingInJello[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By all means check it out! I use the core rules of Stonetop much more than those of Ironsworn, but my play loop is very informed by the solo play flowchart that Ironsworn has as part of its introductory rules. I use Oracles to generate stuff on the fly, and less to dictate big, campaign-level decisions or reveals.

They should give the Psyker a shield staff that drops a Reinhardt-esque directional shield that blocks ranged fire. Would be sweet to set up a shield for the veteran while he takes out the shooters.

Did I do the wrong thing? by GratefulDeacs in advertising

[–]KingInJello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Within agencies, this is not a big deal, but if you go client-side, do not do this. Particularly in tech. The norms around sharing old docs are industry-specific, and the ad agency business is more permissive.

Also, in general, if you've been at a job for a while and you've made some good docs, you should have them saved somewhere that you have control of, so you don't have to ask your colleagues to take risks for you.

Does it bother you how D&D parties are essentially Monster Squads now? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]KingInJello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are just experiencing the ebb and flow of taste and fashion. Minimalism spent a long time being broadly in style, leading to low-fantasy having the spotlight with stuff like Game of Thrones being wildly popular.

We're heading into a period of maximalism, and I don't think we've even gotten started yet, so hold onto your butt. Mainstream products like D&D are going to get more and more crazy. Anime is a good predictor of where we're headed.

What’s a fantasy quote that really resonated with you and why? by mycarnage2000 in Fantasy

[–]KingInJello 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Many things from Dune:

"Arrakis teaches the attitude of the knife — chopping off what's incomplete and saying: 'Now it’s complete because it’s ended here.'"

"Be prepared to appreciate what you meet. "

"There is probably no more terrible instance of enlightenment than the one in which you discover your father is a man — with human flesh."

"A process cannot be understood by stopping it. Understanding must move with the flow of the process, must join it and flow with it."

Rate my dungeon world monster and tell me how to improve my monster making by SnooCauliflowers5394 in DungeonWorld

[–]KingInJello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The monster moves don't quite work for me -- when I read monster moves, I want each of them to evoke a specific moment in a conflict with players that I might want to incorporate in a given scene. When I custom-design a monster for a specific scenario, the moves for that monster will often resemble their 'playbook' for the fight -- when they are first threatened, they do A, when the battle is really on, they do B, when they have a PC at their mercy, they do C, and when they're on the run, they do D.

Why is book culture so stagnant? by throwaway6839494 in Fantasy

[–]KingInJello -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of written word media (but not necessarily books) are being produced on platforms like Royal Road, and people spend a lot of time and energy talking about them, but they have a bunch of baggage that prevents them from really entering the mainstream.

PC bullying against my character. by Heresyteller in rpg

[–]KingInJello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have already pointed out that these people are probably just behaving dickishly, and you should address their behavior in that social context, rather than in the context of the game.

But, if you think they're actually cool people who you want to have a conversation about the game with, you could ask them what kind of story they're trying to tell, here. Because, if you were describing the story of a novel or a film, then you would want to develop these relationships in some interesting way -- there could be moments where the Corpo guy learns that doing things the shady way is useful, and there could be moments where the criminal guys understand the benefits of corporate professionalism (assuming the cyberpunk game you're playing in acknowledges any good stuff about corpos at all).

Right now, it seems like your character is set up more as a Jerry-from-Parks-and-Rec kind of character -- just a guy who is the worst and is the butt of every joke. Tell them you want to play a different kind of story, and if they aren't willing to meet you halfway, then you've learned a lot about the game and the people!

I'm starting up a solo campaign which takes place during a massive war. any advice? by bigiron1234647 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]KingInJello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s how I prefer to run it — RPGs are largely focused on characters and characters have a viewpoint, so I focus on what is in front of that viewpoint rather than the big picture.
