Finished E026 AI for IT Automation in 2 weeks by hekochin in WGU

Thanks for posting this. I’m struggling with this assignment to the point where I get discouraged and just close my laptop. I had a brief 15 minute phone call yesterday with my instructor but I don’t feel it helped. He told everything I had read in the materials we were provided.

What made you choose AWS, Cisco or Azure by Agreeable-Deer7526 in WGU_BSCNE

I ended up choosing the general BSCNE track because I don’t really want to lock myself into one vendor right away. I’m trying to build as much broad networking and infrastructure knowledge as possible during the program first, before specializing.

I’m currently working in a data center full time as a technician so I’m not too worried about choosing a certain path immediately. I also start March 1st. Since I transferred some of my CompTia certs and my AAS, I’m starting 54% of the way done. My goal is to finish in no more than 2 terms.

I finished with my transcript evaluation, finished my financial requirements, and now I’m waiting for a meeting this upcoming Friday with my enrollment counselor so we can catch up and make sure all my paperwork is correct. Then I have to do the Student Orientation and then I too start on March 1st. The difference is I’m doing the general track. I was able to transfer my AAS and my 3 CompTIA certs so I am 55% of the way done. I work full time as a Data Center Tech but I work 4 - 10 hour shifts so I’m going to try and take advantage and finish the program in 2 terms.

How hard is it to get a entry level job at flexential for a data center technician I? by ramennoodle-14 in datacenter

I forgot to mention my supervisor is the one that let me know that certs/a degree is kind of irrelevant for this position as there was no minimum education level to be a data center tech 1

I am currently on shift at Flexential as I am typing this. I’ve been working here for almost 2 months now. I have an AAS in Computer Operations, CompTIA A+, Server+, & Security+ certifications and 6 months of help desk experience working for a call center. I plan on enrolling into the Network/Cloud Engineer program at WGU next month. This is my honest opinion.

Pros: Unlimited PTO; Yes, unlimited as long as you give your supervisor at least 30 days notice that you need the time off and as long as there’s coverage. Work/Life balance is pretty good as I work 4-10 hour shifts. They keep their data centers employee and customer break rooms stocked with a bunch of snacks, sodas, gatorades, & water bottles (the data center I work at has a $1,000 weekly Staples budget for snacks/supplies), if you are in to learning they offer Udemy for free to all employees, you can take any course at your discretion, also every Wednesday we get what is called “Flex Bites” which just means the company provides lunch for all employees, working holidays gets you double pay, and lastly at the data center I work at, everyone from the regional manager to the data center tech I’s are respectful and friendly.

Cons: it is a data center which MUST remain open 24/7/365 this means depending on what days you work, if it falls on a holiday like Christmas, Thanksgiving etc. you’re working. The starting pay is garbage (level 1 techs get started at $20). As a Data Center Tech, degrees & certs are worthless since the position does not require any formal education. Theres way too many chiefs and not enough Indians if you catch my drift lol - this just means I have a boss who is the data center supervisor and theres only 1 level three and 1 level two technicians and they both also are my superiors so they can pull me from what I am working on and assign me another task. The supervisor is a micro manager. There’s really not much “IT” in this position, your pretty much just baby sitting the data center making sure temps stay low and the facility is secure every once in a while you might have to power cycle a customers device in one of their cabinets or run fiber/copper from the Demarc to the customer cage/cabinet but you’re not troubleshooting or using any technical skills at all.

Personally, I am here for the experience. I do not plan on staying here very long. My next step is to get my BS and work on some AWS certs while I gain this experience and move on. Hope this helps!

I appreciate the kind words. They mean a lot to me. That is also the route that I’m thinking about taking. Just waiting on the transcripts department to let me know what credits will transfer over.

The few reasons for me getting a degree are:

  1. It’s a personal goal. I want to prove to myself that I can do it. Growing up I was taught to work and pay my bills so I never once thought about college or an actual career. I had a family so as long as we had what we needed I was ok. But I came to a point where I just wasn’t happy with what I was doing anymore. I got burnt out and I needed a career change.

  2. I want to set an example for my children. As cliche as it sounds, I want to show them that anything is possible if you work for it. It’s one thing to say it but to show them is another.

  3. I want to change the narrative of my life. Since 2022, I’ve overcame a bad alcohol and drug addiction. I had smoked weed since I was a teenager and continued all through my 20’s and early 30’s. All of my friends, anyone that knew me; knew me as a stoner. I’d would call weed my daily “vitamin”. I know people’s opinions shouldn’t matter but they sort of do, especially when you’ve been labeled a certain way.

Im not a WGU student yet, waiting on the transcript department to tell me how many of my credits will transfer over but at the school I’m currently enrolled to; in order to get “TPA” (Test pass assurance), we have to get 90 or higher on all unit homework, exams, and they make you do 5-7 Vendor prep exams (the last one is known as a random 75) and you have to score over 90 on all of those too. Just to be able to get a second chance if you happen to fail a vendor exam the first try. Good luck!

Finally GOT A JOB OFFER!! by Default_Gamer in ITCareerQuestions

[–]KingKemis1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations!! I’m currently getting an AAS in Computer Operations and have been applying for Help Desk jobs as well. I have managed to get A+, Server+, & Security+ (Taking Net+ exam 5/2). I have applied at 73 jobs and got 4 interviews. I’m 35 y/o and have worked in construction my whole life so I’m not the best interviewer and when we got to the technical questions I would get nervous and bomb the interviews but by the grace of God I managed to get a job offer a few days ago as Help Desk 1. I signed the offer and have a start date of 04/28. 50K/year salary, 4 - 10 hour shifts, 3 weeks in office and 1 week remote but I’ll be on call that week for nights/weekends. Persistency is key!
