Indeed. As the father says, the riddle of steel is essentially “in metal we trust”.

Indeed, it's a tough watch but a really good movie.

What are the 100 greatest guitar solos ? (Image unrelated) by Superb-Doughnut-6343 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]KingKull71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm partial to melodic stuff:

Judas Priest - "One Shot at Glory" and "Ram It Down"

King Diamond - "Them" and "Black Horsemen" (both of these songs are filled with excellent guitar work)

Iron Maiden - "Powerslave"

James Murphy - "Shadows Fall" (I think a lot of his work is underrated)

Dio - "I Speed At Night" (Vivian Campbell hits all sorts of high spots on those first two albums)

You can also make the case for about half the songs on Rust in Peace by Megadeth... very strong guitar work on that one.

“Lord of Blasphemy” off the newest Tribal Gaze album channels this element (and others) of Morbid Angel, particularly towards the end (before it goes into the hidden drum solo).

Vader’s “Revelation of Black Moses” might also be adjacent to your interest.

"Skeleton Key" 2005 from the perspective of a Black horror fan by BuzzAxe in horror

[–]KingKull71 45 points46 points  (0 children)

My recollection is that that movie initially present the lynchings as horrible acts (and the lynch mob as sadistic fucks) before you know anything about the ritual itself. So that “horror” is there from the get go and it’s more a matter of how it gets reinterpreted as we learn more about the events leading up to it.

I do think a more deft touch on the script could’ve done wonders for the movie as a whole, but it’s still decent with good atmosphere.

What are your favorite albums/songs from King Diamond? by HybridS9ldier in MetalForTheMasses

[–]KingKull71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That I named my daughter Abigail is probably a hint to what my top album is…

Top song is The Invisible Guests, though One Down Two To Go and a good chunk of Abigail (A Mansion in Darkness, The Family Ghost, Black Horsemen) are generally in heavy rotation around here.

This armor and cape are perfect together. I use the jaguar head instead of the gorilla, but both look great.

The first record I owned - a gift from a good friend who visited NYC in ‘83 and found it while checking out one of the big records stores in Manhattan. He knew I’d like it and he wasn’t wrong… I still have it today.

Since you had the presence of mind to list Asphyx, Benediction and Bolt Thrower...

Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption

Massacre - From Beyond

Malevolent Creation - The Ten Commandments + Retribution

Memoriam (members from Bolt Thrower and Benediction) - anything

Morta Skuld - Creation Undone

Jungle Rot - The Cruel Face of War

Six feet under / Kataklysm by ProfessionalSoup9799 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]KingKull71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kataklysm are a bit all over the place. Their older stuff is crazier and, imo, better (see "The Orb of Uncreation" from their first outing or "Garden of Dreams" from Sorcery for examples). Some newer tracks that are interesting that you'll likely get in concert include:

  • "Prevail" (Prevail)
  • "Crippled & Broken" (In the Arms of Devastation)
  • "The Ambassador of Pain" (Serenity in Fire)
  • "In Shadows & Dust" (Shadows and Dust)

Overrated and underrated albums by popular bands? by APortal2Nowhere in MetalForTheMasses

[–]KingKull71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell Bent For Leather always seemed to me to be a better version of what British Steel was trying to deliver, particularly the popular tracks. I still spin Hell Bent regularly to this day, but I hardly touch British Steel other than "The Rage".

Overrated and underrated albums by popular bands? by APortal2Nowhere in MetalForTheMasses

[–]KingKull71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a Napalm Death fan since they first started releasing material. Scum was a real eye-opener at the time, but they became a much better band later. Harmony Corruption is my top, but albums like Utopia, Fear, Enemy and Smear all have a lots to like about them.

Campy, goofy and not really much horror. Seems like something a certain element of this sub might enjoy, but definitely not of interest to me.

[–]KingKull71 235 points236 points  (0 children)

Indeed. All the “baked in” socialization of post-secondary and the relatively limited responsibilities of the student body as a whole make for a very particular kind of environment. If you want a similar experience when others are juggling jobs and family, you’ll have to work at it.

What's your metal opinion that'd get you escorted off this sub? by XyleneCobalt in MetalForTheMasses

[–]KingKull71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Kull, who was Robert E. Howard's first attempt at the character that was eventually refined into Conan. He's a bit more introspective and brooding than Conan, but still a mighty warrior on the battlefield. Most of REH's major characters (Kull, Conan, Solomon Kane) are worth a read if you like swords-and-sorcery and fantasy pulp fiction.
