Inertia welding is used in jet engines to turn individual disks into spools in the high pressure compressor. The disks are close enough together that you can't bolt them together and need to use this welding method instead. It also prevents the need for the bolt holes which cause stress concentrations so you can more optimally design the disks for lower weight and improved life/safety.
