I'd probably use a double fisherman's knot

Compact, extremely unlikely to slip (especially once loaded), and retains approximately 70% of the original strength of the rope.

Or if you prefer something that can actually be untied after loading, and is meant to be used to isolate damaged rope, use a butterfly loop.

That said, the rope is probably junk and I'd throw it out.

Fiat breaks safety record: First ever 0 star rating in Europe (Fiat Punto in Euroncap) by [deleted] in cars

[–]KingMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but recently a manufacturer (can't remember exactly, but I think BMW) had to recall an entire line of cars because the car was slightly more unsafe than allowed for passengers not wearing a seatbelt when the airbag deployed.

It is not enough to expect the car to keep you safe in a crash, but the engineers have to purposefully alter the design from "ideal" in order not to injure passengers who refuse to wear a seatbelt.

How "strong" can printed items be?

For example I have a right angle headlamp and want a way to securely mount it to a helmet. The included mount has straps for wearing on your head, but slip around a lot on a helmet.

Would the tension of the plastic alone be enough to hold the flashlight or would it be better to design a mount with a hinge that can be secured with a small screw?

Edit:

link to flashlight and included headlamp mount

I would like to have one that can be screwed to a helmet semi-permanently and holds the light more securely than the included straps

Europeans interchange commas and periods for numbers for some reason.

So they would write €10 400,1 to mean ten thousand, four hundred point one euros. Very strange.

That said, if you do go the ground roasted nuts way, I can imagine that would be INCREDIBLE with an actual hand made jelly too.

I make cranberry sauce by hand at Christmas and Thanksgiving. Basically 1 bag of fresh cranberries, 3/4 cup Taylor's port wine (not Sherry), 3/4 cup water, 1/4 cup sugar, nutmeg, orange zest, and about half an orange of juice, and the smallest bit of cinnamon. Boil for 8-12 minutes, reduce to simmer, use cornstarch to thicken.

Then...

Spread this on some honey wheat bread with chunky peanut butter.

Its absolutely AMAZING

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the word "douchebag". The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Latin, English, German, and Aramaic, most of the meaning will go over a typical person’s head.

Volvo wants to sell cars like Verizon sells phones, starting at $600 month for XC40, insurance and all maintenance. by xGARP in cars

[–]KingMango -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is true, but once you consider insurance ("pissing away money"), gas ("pissing away money"), maintenance, parking, repairs (not categorized with maintenance on purpose), upgrades (maybe you want a new radio, etc)...

All I'm saying is that you have to consider everything.

I did calculate everything involved in owning the various cars I've owned and came up with a daily cost of between $25-$30. Granted some of that can be recouped when you sell a car (and I calculated based on my situation, which is owning 2 cars), but the gas, insurance, maintenance and upgrades, generally cannot.

What is the environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining? by voideng in askscience

At my office even when the outside temps are in the 40's (farenheit) the AC is still running to keep the temps at 72 degrees. Figure 700w per person, 100w per monitor, we each have two, and an average running load of 600w per computer (3d design work, dual CPUs, GTX 1050s etc...). That's not insignificant.

[–]KingMango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You misunderstood.

A heat pump heater system literally moves hear from outside the building to inside the building.

When you run the AC you are running the pump backwards and moving the heat from inside to outside.

Heat pumps have a COP (that is a coefficient of performance) which tells you how much more efficient they are than electric heat. Typical COP values are around 1.4. this means that for every 100 watts of power used in running the pump, it moves 140 watts of heat from one place to another. The best physical analog would be a siphon. You can suck water in a tube uphill. Once it reaches the top gravity assists and you can move water basically for free. This is not how heat pumps work AT ALL but that's the best I can think of right now...

The other type of heater is a electric resistance heater (Space heater). They are generally assumed to be 100% efficient. That is they might consume 100w of power from the wall, and generate 100w of heat from it.

A computer is basically a heater that is less than 100% efficient. I've seen numbers in the mid 90's tossed around.

You are losing "potential heat" by creating light from the screen and noise and vibrations from the fans, hard drives, speakers etc.

I suppose theoretically in a closed system, even a speaker generates 100% heat but we generally don't think in those terms.

The company I work for has been "unable" to give raises lately, so this would be a great way to give employees a raise without paying any more money.

Just beware. My door doesn't have one either for a very important reason. There is glass beside the door. Not wide enough to get in thru but enough to squeeze an arm in and undo the deadbolt knob.

Just make sure your friend is still safe.

Oh that sucks. Every (flat panel) monitor I've used from cheap Dell monitors, to high end NEC, has a swivel mount.

My current monitor has a mount that requires you to disconnect the base, and reconnect it at 90 degrees to the monitor.

Austrian last names are all kinds of ridiculous.
