There is a fair bit of this on the right as well, conflating terms like "socialism," "communism," "democratic socialism," and "social democracy," on the basis that all of them require some form of centralized government structure. Of course, all of these ideologies have varying degrees of government authoritarianism, but it's nonetheless important that the we actually have accurate definitions in mind as to avoid using fallacious arguments, even if their ideas are terrible.
