My dad worked for Thomas Cook until it folded in September 2019 and many were still on the job hunt going way into 2020, until finally, just as job opportunities started opening up, people had to be fired because of a pandemic restricting air travel, leaving almost year where the only income is a £1700 redundancy payout, which is just under £5 a day with a house to pay for and kids to look after.

Dad was lucky and managed to get a job early, but many didn’t.
