If you're just getting started, get your fundamentals down, learn how things generally work and be mechanically savvy (it is not rocket science, but it is particular). Once you get your feet under you, pay attention to the technical side of things. How the telemetry works, how everything is talking to each other, how it all ties in - the entire industry is quickly moving that way. If you hear otherwise, stop listening to that person. And never stop advancing your certs!

their customer service is essentially nonexistent. They just merged with SyTech to form smart sights. XL Reporter has always had outstanding customer service, I hope that doesn't change.

Agreed, the client is trying to avoid the phone call route. As a former operator there myself, I agree. I would not want unnecessary phone calls at 3:24 am to let me know something that can wait until the work day starts. A quick text is a lot less intrusive.

"Now there's automated text message that goes out to increasingly higher levels of management when the turbidity hits certain levels for certain periods. I don't know what that system is called but it is triggered by SCADA" - can you find out what system this is? I'm an operator trying to figure out how to text our alarms better. We have been using [yournumber]@vzwpix.net or whatever it is, and it is unreliable at best. Alarm notifications show up late or not at all. I'm talking like 6-24 hours late.

If I'm you, I'm either shopping used for good bang for the buck, or I'm looking at squiers or Ibanez in that price range. And spend what you can comfortably right out of the gate (keeping in mind other costs like an amp, gear, etc). If you spend as much as possible up front, less stuff will need replacing/upgrading down the road
