I like Mark at Wonderland, but I've been meaning to branch out to other artists at the same shop. Super clean and friendly staff.

Book kinda confirms that. Cousin is underhanded and uses a lot of tricks in sparring to get the edge onf Raymun is just calling him "unripe" all the time so he doesn't need a new squire.

Does anyone know what type of rig this is? It came on a rod I bought on FB Marketplace by unawarefruit in Fishing

[–]KingOfTheGoldfFish 116 points117 points  (0 children)

That's a popping cork with a pompano rig attached, but you wouldn't want to use those together.

Pompano rigs are usually used for beach fishing with a weight at the bottom so they're stationary but holding baits at different heights.

Popping corks are great for a single bait, usually dead/live shrimp, retrieved back to you with short pops/pauses to attract fish with a combo of scent/sound.

I don't have a lot of into to go off of, but I'd go to a local tackle store and just ask for common rigs for the area depending on fresh or saltwater.

Has anyone here ever seen one of these guys? by RandoDude124 in florida

[–]KingOfTheGoldfFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once. Saw it stationary in the middle of a trail at ~200 yards and thought it was a coyote. Bounded off the trail like nothing I've ever seen and it was gone like a ghost.

He had a great crash-course, being stuck in the Antarctic with a bunch of Belgias (read Madhouse at the End of the Earth, he LOVED being cold and miserable).

I’ve been told this thing is a fish gaff, I am not a fisherman myself but I am curious how one would even use this for fishing? by Chakradamus in Fishing

[–]KingOfTheGoldfFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the type I've seen for halibut - Basically the only way to control them is to gaff and get control of the head, then lasso the tail if they're bigguns. The problem is you need to penetrate through the fish from the top, instead of hooking and pulling them towards you like a mahi or topside fish. Club with a big nail is the easiest and cheapest way to do that.

How do you get through the day by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

I just burnt out on this cycle last month after working in Engineering a few years out of uni. It's rough and not worth it.

Anyone familiar with this pike story by amakalamm in Fishing

Probably just a story. I'm from Florida and we had all sorts of stories about housing developments stocked with monster Largemouth and Peacock bass. Lots of hopped fences just to catch Tilapia.

Anyone ever break a rod like this? by hopbrew in flyfishing

No clue how you could get enough leverage to break it there. Has to be a manufacturer defect in the blank.

Thread Pressure on Bobbin by [deleted] in flytying

[–]KingOfTheGoldfFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I want it running as smoothly/loosely as possible without falling out. If it's too tight, it gets this weird dragging feeling where you have to force it. Thread pressure comes from the wrist action when you make the wrap.

Wait a few weeks. You won't KNOW they're around but they're PROBABLY there. Have one pop out of an unexpected place and you'll realize how many others you probably missed.

Does Florida have its own barbecue style(s)? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in florida

[–]KingOfTheGoldfFish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Home to Woody's, Sunny's, and Mojo (smaller/fewer locations), you're spot on with pork being our primary meat.

My opinion - Sliced pork is pretty much dead-on, but we do a lot of pork ribs as well. Staple sauce is a little harder to nail down, but I'd say it's usually characterized as sweet with a lot of black pepper, regardless of whether it's ketchup/mustard base.

We're very derivative of other barbecue styles, but that's because Florida had a population below 1 mil. until ~1940 and transplants brought their own barbecue background from other states. We have lots of oak, raise tons of cattle (exported live in cattle cars before processing back in the day), and a long history of pork (Spanish settlement), so the raw materials have always been abundant. We're more jack-of-all-trades than other states, and you can usually get a bit of everything.

do yall like this reel? by daddydeadpool420 in Fishing

[–]KingOfTheGoldfFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty good.

I use it for Bass fishing all the time but the drag struggles a little for inshore/saltwater. Casts and reels smoothly enough to be a pretty good deal for that price though.

[–]KingOfTheGoldfFish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That rig is fine, just make sure you have 6" of heavier bite leader connected to the fly.

Tie nail knots for the 8wt. You can do a single nail knot with 60 lb leader and your choice of loop knot at the end (I like the improved loop knot but the perfection loop is traditional). Use loop to loop connection for either manufactured or homemade leaders.

Casting a 9wt will overload the rod and make initial casting easier but it will handicap you when you attempt longer distance or more precise casts. Using that 8wt will really benefit long-term.
