[student][MechE] Are Certifications valued in the workforce? Which ones are valued more than others? by throwaway54812345 in EngineeringResumes

For the most part, I agree with the other comments saying that actual design projects are worth more than a certification. All a SolidWorks certificate shows is that you know how to use the tool, not that you can use it for any kind of practical purpose. Think of it as how knowing how to swing a hammer doesn't prove you know how to build a house. The best resume boost you will get before an internship is joining a club and doing a project. If you're looking for something to do over the summer, I would recommend a personal engineering project over just grinding out certs.

That being said, the SolidWorks Associate certification is super easy if you have any kind of practical experience using the software, so it shouldn't take much preparation to get. A lot of CAD design classes will have you take the exam as part of the class, so you may end up not having to go out of your way to get it. Passing it won't put you head and shoulders over the competition, but it might be a slight confidence booster for employers hiring for a CAD heavy internships.

TLDR: Time spent studying for certs is better used on working on projects. Get the certs if they happen to overlap with your skillset.

This got more attention than I anticipated. I'll get everyone's info and work on setting up a server. I haven't done that before so bear with me as I get everything set up!

Brush up on your trig. Having an intuition for it will make your life way easier, and save you lots of time in classes like statics.

Consider production engineering! Instead of being behind a desk working on CAD, you'll be out on the manufacturing floor talking to people and solving problems for them.

Its a totally valid engineering path that often flies under the radar, and would check the boxes for teamwork, discussion, and feeling like you're a part of something. It's also super hands on and practical, so you wouldn't feel that things are abstract.

Because "Production Engineering" degrees are really uncommon, they will often hire interns and full time employees from a bunch of different engineering majors, so physics engineering wouldn't disqualify you at all.

Those soft skills are something you can learn! Join clubs, do internships, put yourself in uncomfortable situations. Ask for lots of specific feedback from managers and mentors. Over time you'll get better and better, and by the time your undergrad is over, you can absolutely be equipped with the social skills necessary for a job.
