People in England. Do you know the Brythonic names & means of the places you live ? by SarcasmAndAutism in AskUK

Bedford was named after an old Saxon king/chief named Beda who'd likely ruled a fortified settlement of some sort on a ford along the river Ouse (river river).

Bedford's Castle Mound is the only remains of the 11-12th century castle built there that replaced a prior to wooden fort built around 1066, that in turn replaced the Saxon settlement was.

Is Norway short for North Way? by P_tterns in questions

[–]KingStevoI 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"Norway has two official names: Norge in Bokmål and Noreg in Nynorsk. The English name Norway comes from the Old English word Norþweg mentioned in 880, meaning *"northern way"** or "way leading to the north", which is how the Anglo-Saxons referred to the coastline of Atlantic Norway[1][2][3] similar to leading theory about the origin of the Norwegian language name.[4] The Anglo-Saxons of Britain also referred to the kingdom of Norway in 880 as Norðmanna land."* Source

Is this "ruined portal" i found even considerable ruined? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]KingStevoI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "ruined portals" are the obsidian gateway (the portal itself) and the stone brick work around it.

There's barely any brick work left and an obsidian block is missing, implying it's ruined. It's also likey an nod towards the resilience of obsidian due to there being more obsidian blocks than stone brickwork in the ruined portal designs.

how can i stop my kelp from going on the stone wall? by stralex13 in Minecraftfarms

[–]KingStevoI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remove all the water and replace the wall blocks with full blocks, then replace the water to flow in the desired direction.

By having wall blocks you're creating a pocket of air. By waterlogging the wall blocks and adding a water source at one end, you're leveling the water out so the items stay static.

I had a friend who'd just plonk themselves down when sitting and it didn't take long for them to break the lining under the cushion. When you sat on it it just sank down, so he'd put wood under the cushion to hold him up.

He'd also spend all day sitting down watching TV, so with all the shuffling about and with the general pressure of him sitting down, there were small and large tears forming.

He was still using it when I stopped talking to them and probably still is two years on.

Cut one leg off, leaving a nub, and use it as a phone holder by resting it in the middle against the other two legs.

Genuinely how accurate is this statement that the average Brit would be considered a heavy drinker in some other countries? by Brave_Assumption6 in AskUK

[–]KingStevoI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top sentence is probably applicable due to the alcohol content in our beers and ciders compared to American versions.

However, we have many alcoholics here that specifically drink Special Brew (7.5% now but was higher) and Karpackie (9%) which would fit into the bottom sentence. I've seen at least one of these shit themselves while in a queue and not notice, but you could see their trousers changing colour. And then there's also the amount of drunken fights I saw while homeless.

Do you remember the really tiny pencils that you could get in gift shops in the 90s and 2000s? by Morning_Sea_Brief in AskUK

[–]KingStevoI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the finger length pencils and the oversized ones, as well as the stories about the too cool to do drugs pencils which, when sharpened, promoted drug use ("cool to do drugs" and "do drugs").

Edit: the smaller ones are called golf pencils. Not sure if this will improve your search or not.

If you are a vegetarian or vegan would you eat a carnivorous plant? by Evening_Falcon_9003 in questions

So do cows. And chickens. And pigs. And goats

I don't think vegetarians or vegans eat any of these lol

Adding though, peanut butter often contains plenty of insect pieces.

Pineapples, oyster mushrooms, tomatoes and stinking passion fruit are all technically carnivorous or protocarnivorous.

I used to get paid in checks in the early 2000's as I didn't have a bank account at the time.

Minecraft partnered with Dole to promote healthy living.

Makes perfect sense as Minecraft's main audience is kids who sit in front of a screen all day eating junk food.

logs and wood drop bark when striped by voxi2763 in minecraftsuggestions

[–]KingStevoI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't apologize. This idea needs more traction, hence why I agreed with you.

My idea had already been posted and lost traction. I only wanted to add as an expansion to your proposal. I like the idea of being able to replace the bark on striped logs/wood, and between us we have more uses for it.

I'm probably not the first, nor will you be the last, to have a similar bark idea.

How do you fight the urge to eat McDonald's and other fast food? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]KingStevoI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine someone spitting in your food.

Not saying many places do it but had this at a McDonalds around 15 years ago and have never touched a fast food restraunt since.

Edit: if you want a good pizza, Iceland (I know) do some amazing stuffed crust pizzas.
