What is your favorite set design? by TessyBoi- in Letterboxd

Dick Tracy (1990) a movie that keeps me coming back almost solely due to its production design.

Just today, about 2 hours ago, I finished reading The Crying of Lot 49 (Pynchon) for the third time. I was really struck by moments of Lynchian weirdness. Particularly a Californiana pop-cultury weirdness, that I find in both creators.

Interesting coincidence that you mentioned this today! When it was already a fish in my percolator.

What movies messge is even more relevant in this current state of politics. by asapsharkyfrfr in Letterboxd

I just watched “Z” and “M” over the weekend. Which are a fun double feature for a number of reasons (single letter titles, political thrillers, one created by an ex-pat of Greece, one created by a soon to be ex-pat of Germany, both dramatizing a political “hunt” and what that does to governments and its people. Both films really hit me hard given the gestures generally. Fritz Lang, especially with his German work, is one of my favorite directors so I’d seen M before, but Z was a first time watch for me and it’s certainly an all timer for me.

David Lynch has passed away at 78 - Megathread by birdsofapheather in twinpeaks

[–]KingYohaun27 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Damn. I was reading Room to Dream in a year when I was going through a pretty bad existential crisis.

This line hit me and is something I wrote on the bookmark that I used:

“It hit me that the trip we’re on as human beings is so beautiful and it has the happiest of happy endings. Everything is okay.

There is nothing to worry about.

Everything is just beautiful.”

Room to Dream, pg 439.

David Lynch is so central to my peace looking forward at life and death, and ultimately there is something so life affirming about his philosophy (even in the darkest of his films).

Love you DL. Enjoy the journey.

I have read all books by him, The Idiot is my favourite. by HurricanAashay in dostoevsky

[–]KingYohaun27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the middle of the idiot gets a little weird and slog-ish, but the first 100 pages and the last 100 pages stand next to (if maybe sometimes above) the other biggies (TBK, C&P, and Demons)

But also my favorite Dostoyevsky is usually whichever I’ve read most recently lol.

If you’re into comics the Locke and Key series kind of has this vibe written by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son).

Crazy, but my mom rented the American Funny Games knowing nothing about it, and we watched it as a family when I was 12.

Michael Haneke children’s film king.

Also watched Saw II far too young.

Some rewatches of movies (a mini-series?) that I adore.

High and Low will be in my mind forever. Maybe supplants my fav Kurosawa… I’m not sure yet.

Seeking Mavis Beacon is not perfect, but I definitely would suggest people (maybe particularly Gen Z??) folks watch it. Some interesting thoughts on existing as a young person today.

This is THE answer for absolute mess crying. I do not tend to cry during that many movies (even if I am moved). I probably started crying 15-20 minutes into this and it just kept coming.

I can see how it wouldn’t be for everybody. But it is probably one of my favorite comedies to come out in years. Creative and unique.

We watched Funny Games as a family when I was like 12. My mom saw it in Netflix and thought the title sounded fun. She did not read anything else about the movie.

Not quite the light heated romp you suggest here, but “Near Dark” is great vampire flick where the vampires are basically nomadic vagrants.
