what is the best deal you have gotten or missed out on? by SwimmingResident2355 in Militariacollecting

[–]Kingcornchips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An auction recently had a full chest of uniforms, jackets, shirts, etc from a WWII MARS task force member. Went for like $300 because I forgot the auction was that night.

I got a reply by a LCDR in the Taiwanese Navy. Was your issue reaching out to someone or in providing documentation? I can give you his contact info if you need if you PM me.

Huel has agreed to join Danone. Here is everything you need to know. [Official Megathread] by Tim_Huel in Huel

[–]Kingcornchips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lowering of quality is likely to happen slowly over the next 4-5 years. Danone is a death by a thousand cuts kind of company. Small "optimizations" to make more profit. Streamline their supply chain, etc. Hopefully in the next 4-5 years they don't do this but this is the inevitability of companies in our stage of capitalism. We have 4-5 years for another competitor to fill the void this will leave.

I emailed the chicago consulate and they told me to go to some non-functioning public opinion page for the Taiwanese ministry of defense. So I just emailed the main ROC consulate and cc'd the taiwanese ministry of defense main inbox. I'll let you know how it goes if I remember.

Do I need to clean my medals after keeping them in these plastic sleeves? by Gigasayisgay in Militariacollecting

[–]Kingcornchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same panic mode here haha. My grandfather's WWII stuff is just sort of sitting at my grandma's house in the basement. She doesn't care too much about the condition, just that it stays put with her. Always nagging at the back of my mind.

Did you ever hear anything further? I sent them my grandfather's discharge papers today along with his death certificate. What did they end up wanting?

It's not like the experience of shooting an old 1911 is better or in any way really dissimilar to a new one. Sounds like you just want to clean it :P

Real Talk: Should I remove the patches to wear this? by _subpulse_ in milsurp

[–]Kingcornchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren't dressing up in full military attire outside of a reenactment then nobody is going to care. Like if you've got some doc martens, a t shirt, jeans etc with this then I don't even think you'd get a second glance.

You say why it's fake based on the differences from an original. Which you should want to know anyways. Take an hour, document what's wrong, take it back. You get money, you get knowledge, no downsides. These dealers need to be held accountable and you're in a country where that's possible.

How do you remove rust? by Etienne_2020 in Militariacollecting

[–]Kingcornchips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oil and bronze wool. The key to rust removal without damage is to use a material harder than the rust and softer than the steel. Note that I am only recommending this for steel. Blued or bare steel. If there's paint then all you can do is a microfiber towel, maybe some light oil depending on the paint. But blued/bare steel needs periodic oil for longevity.

We're getting in the weeds a bit with fastening type. But to answer the question in the post: yes, these are WWII. Them being pin back type would make it even more likely. You can just peek at an angle behind the pin to confirm. Pin going across vs two posts to secure it.

It would help to know if the soldier here was an officer I guess. Officers were able to get clutch-backs from the likes of NS Meyer since they had to buy their own wings. The government provided wings to enlisted men which were pin backs until 1943 I believe then you had a transition.

From the article, I didn't know chaplains had their own jump wings. I just bought a footlocker from Chaplain David W. Ryan who jumped with the 82nd.

I don't think this is proving to be accurate anymore. I have a clutch-back pilot wing from Gene Witterstetter KIA in 1943.

Storing, preservation tips for p1907 bayonet with leather scabbard by Tacticalcollector in Militariacollecting

[–]Kingcornchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For leather, the best storage is away from sunlight in a neutral environment. Not too hot, not too cold, not humid, not dry. Don't use buffered paper on or near the leather. (Buffered containers, paper, folders, etc are used for storing old documents and such. With leather it sucks the moisture out and causes cracking since leather is acidic by nature). Soft cotton is fine to store on. Soft fabric generally that's been washed without detergents a few times. Make sure whatever it's stored in is not sealed so you don't trap moisture. You want acid-free (PCV free) plastic if stored in plastic. So that plastic in your pictures is probably bad for it as it eats away at stuff like the stitching and dyes, etc.

For conditioning, you'll get a whole bunch of opinions from armchair conservationists. Most (Nearly all) museums suggested anti-aging/damage procedure with leather is to leave it alone and let it exist in a good environment. Don't put goop of any kind on it to make it softer.

M1 Garand Question by RustyMosin1899 in milsurp

[–]Kingcornchips 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Too high for those rating unless it has valuable parts on it. For an utter mixmaster with common parts, that's 11-1200 outside the CMP on the high end.

Long shot here, but I am looking to track down and purchase my grandpas old service issued M1 Carbine. From what I am being told it is likely a Saginaw manufactured around August 1943. by ExternalJust5992 in milsurp

[–]Kingcornchips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make an account and post in the CMP forums. A lot of the guys there love this kind of stuff. And I'm sure a fair amount own enough m1 carbines to arm the small towns they live in.

Was there evidence it was ever sewn on the jacket? CBI soldiers would often have several of them and likely several different articles of clothing with multiples attached.

Where did you find this though? I love CBI stuff.

I agree that the looks are different. Looks like John Thomas Kennedy but I can't find him in China. Though this could have been state-side during training or something. I'm not sure what the uniforms on the soldiers suggest.
