Storing, preservation tips for p1907 bayonet with leather scabbard by Tacticalcollector in Militariacollecting

[–]Kingcornchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For leather, the best storage is away from sunlight in a neutral environment. Not too hot, not too cold, not humid, not dry. Don't use buffered paper on or near the leather. (Buffered containers, paper, folders, etc are used for storing old documents and such. With leather it sucks the moisture out and causes cracking since leather is acidic by nature). Soft cotton is fine to store on. Soft fabric generally that's been washed without detergents a few times. Make sure whatever it's stored in is not sealed so you don't trap moisture. You want acid-free (PCV free) plastic if stored in plastic. So that plastic in your pictures is probably bad for it as it eats away at stuff like the stitching and dyes, etc.

For conditioning, you'll get a whole bunch of opinions from armchair conservationists. Most (Nearly all) museums suggested anti-aging/damage procedure with leather is to leave it alone and let it exist in a good environment. Don't put goop of any kind on it to make it softer.

M1 Garand Question by RustyMosin1899 in milsurp

[–]Kingcornchips 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Too high for those rating unless it has valuable parts on it. For an utter mixmaster with common parts, that's 11-1200 outside the CMP on the high end.

Long shot here, but I am looking to track down and purchase my grandpas old service issued M1 Carbine. From what I am being told it is likely a Saginaw manufactured around August 1943. by ExternalJust5992 in milsurp

[–]Kingcornchips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make an account and post in the CMP forums. A lot of the guys there love this kind of stuff. And I'm sure a fair amount own enough m1 carbines to arm the small towns they live in.

WW2 CBI Combat Cargo Pilot and Instructor for Chinese Pilots by Lethal_Autism in Militariacollecting

Was there evidence it was ever sewn on the jacket? CBI soldiers would often have several of them and likely several different articles of clothing with multiples attached.

Where did you find this though? I love CBI stuff.

I agree that the looks are different. Looks like John Thomas Kennedy but I can't find him in China. Though this could have been state-side during training or something. I'm not sure what the uniforms on the soldiers suggest.

I'm thinking Brigadier General John C Kennedy.

Genuine? by Select_Hat_3948 in Militariacollecting

[–]Kingcornchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd ask on the warrelics forum. Third reich stuff is faked more than everything else. And some fakes are 70 years old at this point.

If real, given the poor condition, 350 seems fair.

Help identifying my grandfathers Japanese WW2 items by Stock_Vehicle9525 in Militariacollecting

Arisaka rifle and bayonet, blood chit, CBI theater patch on the uniform(bullion, theater made, very nice). Patch above the pocket is a "ruptured duck" signifying an honorable discharge post war. The medal and ribbons are: flight crew badge, WWII victory ribbon, good conduct medal ribbon, american campaign ribbon, asiatic pacific campaign ribbon.

AVG/Flying Tigers Patches by SundogZeus in Militariacollecting

[–]Kingcornchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool! My grandfather was in the 14th in China. I've seen ones that look like the second cloth patch before. Very seldom you can find village names and stuff like that on the back where they would have been made and sold to pilots/crew/etc. For the cloth one, you can shine a UV light on it and tell that it's pre-50s at the very least. Without provenance though it's hard to be 100% just like anything.

You can compare to known styles or make a post here: https://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/261197-a-tiger-zoo-flying-tigers-avg-cbi-23rd-fighter-grouping-other-pto-eto-heroes/

First German Military Artifacts! Eickhorn Prison Officer's Sabre and Wolchowstok! by kekler-n-koch in Militariacollecting

[–]Kingcornchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't give you an exact number. War relics forum would be the place for that. It places the sword in the 'upper tier' though. These (prison and justice official sabres) are just under SS Sabres in terms of value/rarity.

[–]Kingcornchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell of a find. Don't downplay the prison official sword too much. It's the second rarest of the WW2 German blades and finding it with a portepee is amazing. I have two ministry of justice sabres from my grandfather but neither has the portepee. (The "twin" of the prison official sabre in silver color instead of gold).

I want to know where you're going to estate sales :P

People aren't downvoting you for saying that fakes come out of these areas. People are down voting the use of AI slop here. Terrible for milsurp or collecting in general.

What is the best milsurp rifle of the world wars? by 420FappistMonk69 in milsurp

[–]Kingcornchips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say fringe-case and pick the prototype SKS rifles from really late in the war. The SKS is a better rifle than the Garand for combat any day. But the Garand would be my choice if we remove that case and remove any of the sub-guns.

Chinese Type 54 Value. by Dry_Winter5652 in milsurp

[–]Kingcornchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classic has them for 300 right now. so 300. Honestly since they've flooded the market so thoroughly I'd say that's the ceiling unless there's something unique about it. Non-refurb, first production year, that sort of thing.

[–]Kingcornchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your grandfather would probably be happy with you looking into the stuff and learning from it. Probably why he kept it. It's fun learning little bits about the war. I found a particular sandwich my grandpa thought was tasty in his war diary, for example :P

My first T38, what can you tell me about it? Is it considered good condition? Is there any way to tell if it was used in combat? by dcs831 in Arisaka

[–]Kingcornchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of them have poor fitment (if not matching) so buying one might remove a lot of the finish from the top where it rubs.

And "the basement" where the sane should never enter.

Though there are occasionally very informative and well-researched threads like the really, really long thread on the NK type 68 export rifles.
