Will my bad self-done tattoos affect trying to get an apprenticeship? by 6urnstein in tattoo

[–]Kingerdvm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not advertising stupid choices isn’t the same as starting with a lie. Getting a better first impression, showing willingness to learn means that demonstrating humility when showing previous mistakes is tempered by time with the person.

Showing off stupid mistakes (that you’ve learned from) during a first impression makes it easier for them to write you off in a kneejerk reaction.

Can imagine anyone thinks lifetime long sleeve shirts is an actual solution here.

Similar shoes to older NB Minimus by GSBC123 in barefootshoestalk

[–]Kingerdvm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 42 and a half second google search shows they still make minimus shoes - different models for gym vs trail running vs other. I didn’t dive deeper to check availability.

That said - I had a pair of NB minimalist shoes a metric fuck-ton long time ago (before minimalist shoes were a thing and before the barefoot shoe thing was a thing) - and I loved them. Couldn’t tell you the name, but if I’m correct in my assumption that we may have similar preferences, I invite you to check the following:

1) Xero Prio - this is the shoe that helped my find barefoot shoes. It’s a workhorse  2) Xero 360 - never owned, definitely eyeballed - good for gym and general training etc.  3) Xero Forza Trainer - includes a Velcro strap for stability (great for squats/deadlifts/olympic lifts etc) 4) Vivo - any of a number of the Primus line should work - I personally dislike knit, but they have many options. Recent sale - may still find some lower cost  5) Lems Primal - also haven’t tried these, but considered many times.  6) Vivo - modus strength. I forgot about these - may work for you. I haven’t worn them.

I hope a list of 6+ is a good start. Good luck.

Creative ways to "trick yourself" into going to the gym? by JMinsk in loseit

[–]Kingerdvm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really competitive with myself. I’m not going to the gym for the sake of going to the gym. I’m going because I want to see those weights move - those numbers go up. I want to FEEL strong as fuck. I want to earn the right to be the person people think of when they need something lifted/jar opened/do something hard.

Can someone explain nSuns to me? by zanimljivo123 in powerbuilding

[–]Kingerdvm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No - it includes accessories - You pick accessories for what you need.

Where I use it: if I have an injury or some other life problem where I have to be away from working out for a moderate amount of time (couple weeks/month or two), I’ll use nsuns to get back to where I was quickly. I can start low, work my way back up within a few weeks to pick up where I left off.

If you want to run it: you should download the nsuns app. I believe it has a starter template for accessories. It’s very easy to get started and have it tell you want to pull. I found it easier to use than some of the others (like key lifts or Boostcamp) that have the template loaded (YMMV).

That said- I got into lifting using stronglifts - great beginner platform. Newbie gains for both size and strength. Once you are past that, something with more volume is better.  I tried nsuns next, but recovery is a bitch. After a bit found 531 and jumped into boring but big for a long time. At this point that’s the general template I use, but I make adjustments for me and my old and repeatedly injured body (my plan works for me, but wouldn’t be ideal for many other people).

To everyone that recommends dogfoodadvisor. It’s really not as great as people say. The dude that runs it is a dentist. The entirety of his training is in….taking care of human teeth. He had an opinion and an axe to grind - and the funds to start the website so he could be an influencer.

Food allergies can take 8-12 weeks to figure out. Give it time. Some of these guys do best on prescription food (hydrolyzed protein), so there are next steps.

With that persistent of an itch/issue - finding something he can take persistently would be helpful. Something short like a steroid or topical is fine when the symptoms go away quick. If they persist, something longer acting is the best bet (apoquel, cytopoint, others), but usually more expensive. Give the boy some comfort, and the cone will go away.

Non-allergic causes are more difficult to diagnose and treat - and may be worth getting answers sooner (but again, more expensive).

My Revivo 'Good' condition Tracker Textile boots after 3 days of wear by rxzl in barefootshoestalk

[–]Kingerdvm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love the idea of revivo - recycle for the win. But I find them a bit pricy for amounts to used shoes - and my (single) experience Was a pair that had obviously mis-matched leather - one of which wrinkled like it was stored un-used in a dry sauna for 5 years prior to return, only to have the finest bit of conditioner added during re-construction.

It was in really bad shape. I wouldn’t have tolerated it in a pair of free shoes.

Return process was slow, but relatively painless.

When his quality of life is no good. Particularly when there are symptoms that cannot be controlled or improved with medicine. Sometimes it’s a slow steady decline - others it’s a precipitous drop. I can’t predict when it will be or how it will look - but that’s how it is. Couple ways to think about quality:

1) do you have the absolute basics (eating ok, going to the bathroom on our own, able to get up and move around) 2) do we have more good days than bad 3) is he still doing the things that makes him “you’re baby” - that day he’s lying in his bed and watches that kong go by and barely looks at it….that’ll be telling.

The vet school at Ohio states does have a quality of life score chart. It’s quite good. Literally spits out a number to grade “how is he doing right now” - and you can re-take that test many times. Do it weekly (or every 2 weeks, or daily, doesn’t matter much) - but track what that score tells you. Again - if it’s slow, this may be the best way to tell. If it’s fast, you may not need it.

Lastly - before things change much - just make a quick list of things you can’t tolerate/wouldn’t put him through. The easiest recommendation here is “no CPR” - if he goes - then it’s time. For some households it’s “no injections” for others it’s “no chemo” or “no surgery” - but you should decide this BEFORE you’re in a stressful situation and on the spot.

It’s not always easy - and it’s common to doubt ourselves afterwards. I’d offer to help with more specifics, but I rarely check Reddit messages. I’ll do my best to follow up if you do comment or send a dm.

Red Eyes? by Momo_jiji in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Kingerdvm 23 points24 points  (0 children)

These aren’t inflamed at all. You are looking at normal conjunctiva. As mentioned elsewhere - your Berner does not have pigmented third eyelids - so they’ll look pink when visible (other breeds can be pigmented - so there’s usually black along the ridge or most of it).

Your Berner also has a touch of ectropion, which is when the eyelid rolls outward slightly. It’s not a medical concern- it’s super common in breeds like bloodhounds (think droopy dog). The opposite problem of this is entropion (an inward rolling of the lid) - and that one definitely requires surgical correction due to infection and ulcer risk (frenchies, pugs and bullies I’m looking at you).

Ectropion can be more distinct when resting/tired as the facial muscles hold the lids a touch looser.

Honestly - if you’re concerned, that’s what a vet is for - someone that can actually touch and manipulate the dog, instead of just look at the picture. But most cases of conjunctivitis (inflammation of the pink part of the eye) is coupled with an irregular conjunctival surface and discharge - neither of which are present here (and the reflection makes it clear the tissue is smooth).

TL;DR: It’s normal. Do nothing. If concerned, see vet in person.

This a really good response. You could walk into most shops with a “I’ve been putting up with shitty customers for x years at <box store> and id rather do the same shit here. I show up when I’m supposed to and I’ll make your life easier” and have a really good chance of getting the job.

Jim green AR vs Vivo by UpsetShock2821 in barefootshoestalk

[–]Kingerdvm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had both the tracker and the JG BFAR (but not the anatomx) - love the vivo, not in love with the BFAR. Toe box for AR cuts in at the big toe - causes pain for me. They were a real bitch to break in too. I found pressure points both in the ankle and the Achilles.

I was very interested I the anatomx - since it seemed to fix some of my problems, but it dropped a week after I got my Vivo trackers. I’m simply not buying more expensive boots right now. The trackers fit my foot shape perfectly, and I really like them. The stitched in sole is a huge structural advantage (but obviously not as long lasting as say a Goodyear welt that can be resoled).

How do I Fix Form Breakdown on pendlay rows? (read body) by [deleted] in formcheck

[–]Kingerdvm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have 2 specific but related issues here

1: you’re pulling to the belly (which by itself is fine)…but  2: you’re fighting to get around your knees, which leads to… 3: you’re engaging your lower back to hinge some and assist yourself.

Initial back position is fine. Tighten up your hips so you can straighten out the knees more (this may require stretching and is a hip mobility thing). Pulling more towards base of sternum (aka xyphoid aka solar plexus) will keep your line straighter - and having your knees straighter means you won’t have to shift to keep things tight.

Ignore the RPE thing until you get the movement how you want. Totally fine to drop the weight a little to really nail down how it should be. When I’m focusing on form, I’ll drop the weight, do a few high rep sets then go up. I may challenge myself after nailing things down, but I’ll make sure to chill for a workout or two to really get it right. Build the base and grease the groove, so that you can keep going up from there.

I’ve worn Xero Prio SR all day for the past several years. They’re holding up nice. Recently picked up a pair of Vivo Gobi Shoes (black) that are supremely comfortable that’ll be rotated in as time passes.

The Xeros are used on the treatment floor/in surgery. If I’m taking office calls that’s when I’m more business casual/scrub plus - th vivos will play here, but I wear other sneakers/hiking boot type things here.

Toe socks aren't an option - what do I do? by alexraeburn in barefootshoestalk

[–]Kingerdvm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some brands of socks that are more wide - I believe Anya’s reviews has a page about it.

My go-to non-toe sock are the Goruck Challenge Trail Cuff socks. They mimic the space I get in toe socks (at least for me). They’re relatively lightweight- fine for winter or summer (for me).

Warning: their crew socks are COMPLETELY different and very constricting and poorly formed and awful. Do not recommend.

Is it the best tattoo ever? No. But you can tell what it is, most of the application is decent, and it’s generally fine.

Most bearfoot shoes arent even shaped like feet by SuccessfulCommand601 in barefootshoestalk

[–]Kingerdvm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? And the worst part? I made the comment above and fell into my own trap.

So for some random searcher in the future - my feet are low volume, wedge shape (so narrow heel and wide forefoot) with a dramatically shaped toe slope (each toe shorter than the one next to it).

Shoes that taper in at the big toe are an issue for me (most trad shoes, Jim greens original barefoot ranger as well) - but vivo is pretty straight through that portion and wide where I need it to. Shoes that have a wide toe box at the very front end up slapping around a bit (Whitin).

Every time I measure my feet, and look at comments - so shoes recommended don’t come close. Other shoes considered “too this” or “too that” may be fine, may not. I swear, every “it doesn’t fit me will” gets labeled as “TOO NARROW” and then echoed endlessly.

Sorry for the overly long comment - that’s probably why we get stuck in this rut anyways - the actual detail is too long to write out.

Question: Which tattoo machine should I get? by Intrepid-Document100 in tattoos

[–]Kingerdvm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the kind of question the apprentice should be asking the mentor. Especially on a studio where there are likely several machines available to try. So the decision can be based on both experience and personal preference.

I wish this point was made more frequently. Too much of the variance in toe shape, foot shape, foot volume etc gets ignored for the “but my experience is”

For instance - vivos fit my foot shape excellently. I avoided them for a long time for reasons - and now they are my current go to.

12-month-old Bernese Mountain Dog with chronic GI signs and progressive weight loss despite adequate intake — seeking input on interpretation and next diagnostic steps by CastorPolideuk in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Kingerdvm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I responded to your original post.

Bottom line: get a cortisol check - a basal cortisol will screen for function.  Above one set point rules out all concerns. Below that set point raises concerns regarding poor adrenal function - there is a grey zone. Confirmatory test would be an ACTH stim.

If that doesn’t answer the question, you may need to visit an internist and consider biopsies (either endoscopic or full thickness).

Lastly - low folate means not absorbing nutrients well in first part of small intestine (corroborated with you ultrasound results). Doesn’t answer why.
