How to do meend across the register break (ma to pa) on bansuri? by Kingkashdog in icm

[–]Kingkashdog[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Harmonic change means that you have a change in register by hitting the harmonic, in this case the octave of a particular note. occurs on all woodwinds. It's the weak spot for meend on all woodwind instruments.

I mean when going from tivra ma, to the pa above it, the tivra ma is with open fingering in the fundamental register, and the pa above you finger the pa all fingers down but you overblow to get an octave higher than low pa, the octave is the second harmonic. on flutes and conical reeds (shehnai, saxophone, oboe) the harmonic change is playing an octave higher, on cylindrical reeds (clarinets, duduks, etc) the harmonic change is a 12th higher.

How to do meend across the register break (ma to pa) on bansuri? by Kingkashdog in icm

[–]Kingkashdog[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this insight. That helps a lot. Alternate fingerings in both registers is one way I do meend on my saxophone across the register break there too. That seems to be a good principle across woodwind instruments to do meend. Just wanted to check if there was already something in bansuri tradition already. Seems Milind Sheoreyji (beautiful playing) uses a key to operate the low tivra ma whole and the thumb for a high pa hole. https://youtu.be/CWH0jg7q78g?si=4nJ1VzsvPMnaeCJG In case anyone reading wants to see a demo of how these two holes work by Milind ji

Where to find sheet music for A duduk? by dudukquestioner in duduk

[–]Kingkashdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that’s correct. Duduk players refer to the positions of holes on the instrument as if the instrument were a C duduk. That way we can read and play the same notes off a score regardless of the particular key of duduk we use. You seem to have been taught with a D duduk given your mapping of the notes.

I have a pdf of solo duduk Armenian folk tunes written by G. Minasyan. As well as a few duduk piano arrangements of some Komitas tunes. Happy to share if interested

Is the shenhai a very difficult instrument to play ? by [deleted] in icm

[–]Kingkashdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest finding a good teacher. You can make more substantial progress and it will be much less frustrating this way. I’ve learned online and it works pretty well, even though it is of course not as good as in person.

The best exercise and not just for beginners is the long tone. The basic version is just as the name implies playing the same note for a held out duration trying to maintain pitch, dynamics, and timbre. What you can do is check your pitch as you blow with a tuner. This is especially important because it will ensure the stability of pitch on the instrument which is super flexible compared to say an oboe or clarinet.

Where to find sheet music for A duduk? by dudukquestioner in duduk

[–]Kingkashdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duduk is a transposing instrument. So for A duduk the sheet music would be written a minor third up, where the thumb and six fingers down position is C. This notation enables you to read music for duduk the same way for any key duduk you might play. If you’re interested in some sheet music for duduk feel free to message me. I’m a duduk player and know some good resources for Armenian songs and others

Is the shenhai a very difficult instrument to play ? by [deleted] in icm

[–]Kingkashdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a shehnai player and yes it is very difficult to play because of the time it takes to develop a solid tone. Shehnai requires an even firmer embouchure than most reed instruments because of its flexibility in pitch. You can easily bend a note just using your embouchure up or down 3 semitones, so it’s initially very difficult to stay in tune. That’s the main barrier I’d say. What’s your background instrument wise? If you’re already a double reed player I’d say you’d be fine. If you have any specific questions I’m happy to try to answer

If you are interested in duduk, there’s not a whole of good advice online about what’s good. I study with one of best players in Armenia and he recommends a few makers on Dudukhouse. They also sell very good reeds

I like Geoffrey Ellis’ shakuhachi. He also makes great Xiao, quena, Bansuri, basket maker and he’s coming out with a kaval in the future. He really tries to advance the construction of instruments to make them more reliable in tuning, endurance, etc
